Publisher's Review
This book was written to introduce the theoretical foundations of the courses "Human Resource Management" and "Labor-Management Relations" (Employment Relations) offered in business administration departments at universities and graduate schools.
Normally, these two subjects are often offered as separate courses in universities, but since theories such as compensation management theory, maintenance management theory, and labor union theory are common areas covered in both subjects, and various national exams (Certified Labor Attorney, Management Consultant, Level 5 Civil Service Examination, etc.) actually cover the contents of the two subjects in an integrated manner, I have included them in one book, although the volume is somewhat large.
Although I tried to describe the contents covered in a typical university textbook in a plain style, I sometimes included content beyond the undergraduate level on certain topics (e.g., practical strategies for job expansion, Taylor-Russell graphs explaining selection principles, theoretical basis of career evaluation, difference between BARS and BOS, process of deriving prevailing wage rates, theoretical techniques of personnel placement, etc.) depending on the need for explanation.
If you are reading this book for the first time or studying human resource management at the undergraduate level, you only need to study the main text of each chapter. However, if you are preparing for the national exam or studying human resource management at the master's level, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with the 'Supplementary Study' and 'Advanced Study' sections in addition to the main text.
[Content Structure]
The essential learning materials in human resource management and employment and labor relations have been reorganized into four sections: introduction (the significance and research subjects of personnel management), job management, personnel functions (securing, developing, evaluating, rewarding, and maintaining personnel), and strategic areas (employment relations theory, strategic personnel management).
Each chapter is composed of a unit outline (a mind map of the contents of each chapter), a study guide (introduction of the main contents), a main text (organized for easy understanding based on the contents of major domestic and foreign textbooks), supplementary learning (introduction of cases and background knowledge related to the contents of the main text), annotations (supplementary explanations of the contents of the main text [footnotes at the bottom] and cited references [endnotes for each chapter]), in-depth learning (introduction of various theories that can apply and expand what has been learned), and practice problems (questions for review).
[Major Revisions]
The following are the areas I focused on while rewriting 『Personnel Management and Employment Relations』 this time.
First, we have reflected in the text the content that needs to be added from major textbooks and papers newly published since the publication of the 9th edition (e.g., the relationship between tenure and performance, the limitations of the wage peak system, and the effects and side effects of performance-based personnel systems).
Second, we have revised the existing version to address areas where sentences were overly difficult or required additional explanation, and adjusted the content placement where necessary (e.g., the gainsharing section and the effectiveness of the labor-management council system have been rewritten to make them easier to understand, and the personnel management plan by strategic type has been moved from Chapter 1 to Chapter 9).
Third, we have supplemented content related to new topics recently covered in various national examinations (e.g., the pros and cons of flexible working hours, four perspectives on international human resources management).
[Words of Thanks]
Since the first edition was published in January 2012, many people have used this book over the past 13 years.
This book has grown thanks to the students preparing for various national exams (Certified Labor Attorney, Management Consultant, Level 5 Civil Service Examination), the professors and instructors who have adopted it as a textbook at various universities, the students taking those classes, and the executives and employees of various companies who have used it in their management training courses.
I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude.
We are releasing this tenth revised edition, reflecting the diverse feedback we have received from you.
I wish health and happiness to all who read and study this book.
