『Gray Man』 Kim Dong-sik's first novel!

“I have a feeling that’s the case.
Throughout my life as a writer, I have encountered the existence of the 'devil'.
I have a feeling that I'll be using it a lot.
“Then wouldn’t that be a contract with the devil?” _Kim Dong-sik (novelist)

The seventh installment of the "Modern Literature Pin Genre" series, featuring the most modern and cutting-edge writers of contemporary Korean literature, has been published with Kim Dong-sik's "Devil's University."
『Devil's University』, an adaptation of a work published in the September 2024 issue of 『Modern Literature』, is the first medium-length novel by author Kim Dong-sik, who created the 'short story' boom with 『Gray Man』 and captivated 300,000 readers.

The author, who has been praised for his jokes that “heavily strike our common sense” (popular culture critic Kim Bong-seok), his “overwhelming imagination that transcends genres” (film director Ahn Kook-jin), and his “sensory shock that makes you doubt what you believed and see what you didn’t want to see” (Jeong Se-rang), like solving a “Rubik’s Cube made up of all aspects of human nature,” depicts the devilish experiments of three college students who research “methods to make humans unhappy” with the keywords of love, money, and eternal life, respectively.
In a time when people are more devilish than devils, the author presents the paradox that devils must “become more like humans” (Park In-seong) in order to destroy humans, and asks whether the “humanity” we have affirmed so far has not been overestimated.

Since his debut, he has published over 1,000 novels and continued his exploration of human nature for seven years. His reflections have deepened to the point of reaching the level of a mid-length novel in 『Devil's University』. While writing this work, the author said that he had a feeling that he would write more stories about "the existence of 'the devil'", foreshadowing the expansion of the 'Kim Dong-sik World'.

Into the book
“Can you help me win the heart of the person I love?”
"possible.
Because my power as a devil is the 'power to conquer love'.
Humans believe that love is fate and destiny, but love is not that pure; it is just a game to be conquered.
I can make her love you right now.
(……) But you know, right? Deals with the devil come with a price.”
--- p.17

"Then shall we begin our first gamble? Bet on when this human will die."
--- p.51

Soon after, the gambling table was cleared, and an alarm went off on Do-jun's phone saying that 18 million won had been deposited.
(……) 18 million won in one room! Nothing in his life could have caused a bigger dopamine explosion than this.
At that moment, when I was so happy that my fists were shaking, Videl spoke.
“Shall we start the next game?”
--- p.58

Now, Dojun has reached a state where he can rejoice without hesitation even when watching people die.
To him, it was just a gamble.
I was indifferent to who died horribly and in what way.
--- pp.60-61

“You apply to become an organ donor.
If someone receives your organ as a transplant, that person will die and you will take over their body.”
“Is that really possible?”
“The devil does not lie.
Of course it is possible.
How about it? If you utilize organ donation wisely, you could continue living.
“Will you accept this power?”
--- p.82

It was perfect.
If you live your life as Kim Nam-woo and accidentally die, then it starts all over again.
Eternal life through organ transplant.
“I am God.
“God who lives forever!”
--- p.92

He goes back to the past and repeats the same life again, meets me again, goes back to the past, repeats the same life again, meets me again, and again, again, again, goes around forever.
As soon as he accepts my offer, that person disappears from reality forever.
That disappearance is worse than death.
Because there will not even be any rest for the soul.
Forever, literally.
--- pp.108-109

Publisher's Review
The devil doesn't lie
Just answer desire with desire
The intersection of great good and great evil,
What truly led humanity to ruin was human will!

『Devil's University』 begins with the simple imagination of what if “a devil's university exists in hell” (Author's Note).
If even devils worry about grades and employment, what if your career path after graduation is determined by competing in the most 'devilish methods'?
Three friends from the 'Human Desire Club', 'Abloh', 'Videl', and 'Belle', review each other's presentation topics before an important presentation.
'Abloh' shows a video of an experiment that leads to the destruction of humans by giving them the power to target their unrequited love like in a game, and 'Videl' shows a video of an experiment that leads to the destruction of humans by making them addicted to gambling by betting their lives.
'Bell' is a so-called 'failing devil' who is perennially late to class, but he is a descendant of the great devil who deceived Qin Shi Huang in the distant past with 'eternal life' and insists on the topic of 'eternal life' despite being openly criticized by the professor and the dissuasion of his friends in order to prove that he is the successor devil.

The devil in 『Devil's University』 is a being that responds to desire with desire and simply "wears the two-faced desires of humans like leather."
The 'eternal life' that 'Belle' announces at the end of the work is, rather than being a "classical" "concept", it is trapped in an endless return to the past.
This is also something that “targets the universal desires of those living today” (Park In-seong), as can be inferred from the popularity of so-called ‘regression objects.’
At this point, our previously affirmed belief in human 'will', or 'humanity', that "the power of love will transcend all things" and that "the day my daughter died" will be "imprinted on my soul" and that even if my memory is erased, I will eventually recall it, is shattered.

However, as pointed out in the “Work Commentary,” although “humans are extremely foolish,” they are also beings who “have the opportunity to become better because of their foolishness.”
We may overestimate our human potential and repeat mistakes, “falling into great evil,” but we can also move toward “the greatest good” (Park In-seong) through our choices.
Will you perish by your own will, or will you move towards the light?
This is precisely what 『Devil's University』 leaves us with.

Author's Note

One day, an idea suddenly occurred to me.
Wouldn't a demon with the tag "college student" be refreshing? What if there were a demon university in hell, and college student demons attending it? What if there were majors, classes, and grades? (...) The first scene I wrote after thinking about this was the scene where the main character, the demon "Bell," is in a panic and late for class.
All the stories in 『Devil's University』 began from that one scene. _From the Author's Note
