Book Introduction
Deep-rooted resentment that has become an arrow of curse
A new horror novel by Jeon Geon-woo that will save those exhausted from the heat!

Author Jeon Geon-woo, who has been responsible for readers' summer by presenting heart-wrenching Korean horror novels, has published a new work, 『Angshim』, on Wepick.
On a summer night when just breathing is exhausting, my lover K tells me an unbelievable story.
A few years ago, following the words of a homeless man named Choi, who said he would curse someone to death, K ended up reciting the curse out of deep resentment toward a person he hated so much that he wanted to kill them.
"Resentment" shows how terrifying a grudge can be, even if it started from something very small, and at the same time, how dark and terrible revenge it can lead to when held for a long time, making us consider the grudges, big and small, that remain within us.

Into the book
It was a hot night, with no wind and high humidity, and sweat forming between my nose just from breathing.
The old fan, which groaned every time it spun, was no help in relieving the heat.
Rather than soothing me, I listened to that squeaking sound, and as if low pressure was gathering, an unpleasant feeling slowly rose from deep within my heart.
It was the perfect situation to vent all my complaints to anyone.

It's a really scary story, but are you going to listen or not?
“Have you experienced it yourself?”
When I asked, K nodded as if to say, "Of course."
Well, I'm not the type to bring up stories floating around on the internet and I don't have the talent to make up stories, so I guess it's something I experienced firsthand.
Still, I couldn't appease my doubts, and paradoxically, that's why I wanted to hear K's scary story even more.
Sleep had already run away, and the midnight heat was reaching its peak.

know.
I don't get along with words like instinct or intuition.
But that was the case back then.
It was such a strange night that all those strange and awkward things were easily accepted.
And soon… … that night turned terrifying.
Something appeared.
The first thing that came to me was sound.
It was a strange sound.
Sizzle.

--- pp.15~16

I remember it clearly.
So, the unidentified noises coming from the room, the eerie atmosphere that hung around the bathroom that made the tropical night seem pale, and the gray-white fluorescent lights that had started to turn black from the outside and seemed like they would soon stop shining.
And what I found out was… … .
Seriously, that's what happened.

--- pp.17~18

Mr. Choi bowed his head in gratitude.
As if I had done him a great favor.
I was watching to see if Mr. Choi would take something out of his pocket.
I thought that the only thing I could do in return would be something like a cigarette or a piece of candy.
But you know… … .
Mr. Choi leaned down so that his long beard almost touched the bowl of seolleongtang, brought his face close to mine, and said this.
“Then, I will kill just one person.”

Publisher's Review
“I will kill just one person.
“Is there not a single person you want to kill?”

Author Jeon Geon-woo, who began his career by publishing the short story “Sleep” in “Korean Horror Short Stories 3” and has since published “Night Storytellers,” “Strange Stories from a Gosiwon,” “The Devil,” “The Twisted House,” and “Friday’s Ghost Story Club,” has published his new work “Ange” as part of the Wisdom House short story series, Wipick.
On a hot summer night, when just breathing makes you sweat, K suddenly says he wants to tell you a scary story he experienced firsthand.
Since K is usually a rational and reserved person, I, K's lover, listen to his story with a puzzled mind.
During his graduate school years, K receives a suspicious offer from a man named Choi, whose exact name and identity are unknown, at a homeless shelter where he was working part-time.
If K wants, he will recite a curse spell that can kill just one person.
At the time, K, who desperately wanted to kill someone, joined the curse as Choi had instructed, and the next day, an unidentified non-human being came to visit K.

Anyone who has ever held a grudge against someone will know.
How small a thing can be to start a grudge.
However, even if it is a small thing, if you hold a grudge for a long time, it can build up to the point where you want to harm someone without even realizing it, so most of us tend to let go of our feelings with time.
This short story by Jeon Geon-woo shows how vivid darkness can stain our hearts when we hold onto a grudge for a long time without resolving it, and when someone gently touches that grudge, and makes us reflect on ourselves to see if there is any grudge left inside us, however small.

50 stories in 50 books in one year
A special experience that allows you to breathe deeply into 'a single story'

Beginning in November 2022, Wisdom House will be introducing the most diverse and newest stories of Korean literature, one per week, through its short story serial project, "Weekly Fiction."
The series is released every Wednesday through the Wisdom House website and newsletter 'We Pick'.
Starting with author Koo Byeong-mo's "Shred," 50 stories are scheduled to meet readers over the course of a year.
The Wepick series publishes novels that have finished serialization in this way sequentially.
Starting with the first five stories on March 8th, four stories will be published every second Wednesday of the month, for a total of 50 story festivals throughout the year.
This time, rather than the conventional method of binding together several short stories, the book is composed of only one short story, an unusual attempt that provides readers with a special experience of breathing deeply into each story.
Wepick is not bound by any criteria or distinctions such as material or format, and focuses solely on the completeness of a single story.
Through novels by a variety of authors, including novelists, non-fiction writers, poets, and youth literature writers, we break down genres and boundaries, expanding the possibilities and enjoyment of stories.

There is also a special gift inside the book.
This is a supplementary poster titled 'One Novel', which contains an entire novel on one poster.
A single novel offers readers the special experience of encountering a story in a new way.

Introducing the Wepick Series

Wepick is a short story series from Wisdom House.
It offers a special experience of breathing deeply into ‘one story’.
I dream that this small piece will become a new piece that expands your world, that each small piece will come together to become your story, and that it will become a piece of literature that will be deeply engraved in your heart.
