★★★★★ The latest work by the winner of the Yamamoto Shugoro Award, the Akutagawa Award, and the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award for Fine Arts
The most beloved novelist in Japan today, Shuichi Yoshida's "Sin, Loving Ten Thousand Years" has been published by Eunhaengnamu Publishing.
The author, who has consistently received support from readers across various genres based on the belief that 'human = story', presents a mystery set on a stormy island this time.
The story faithfully incorporates elements of a classic mystery novel, such as a party held on an isolated island, a detective with a strange request, and an unidentified jewel, offering the fun of solving a mystery alongside the characters. The author's signature social perspective is added to lead to an unexpected and original conclusion.
As the starting point of writing was “I wanted to write a completely new story, different from anything I’ve ever written before,” what we encounter at the end of the mystery is a tragedy and love etched into an unforgettable life and era.
This work, which received praise for being “fresh and authentic in every scene from beginning to end,” is a mystery human drama that stands out with its novel attempts and depth that only a seasoned storytelling master can show.

Into the book
Now, what I'm going to introduce from now on is the story of a famous family set on this Kujukushima Island.
--- p.5
In Noge Village, Yokohama, there is an office of a private detective named Ranpei Togatta.
One summer afternoon, a young man, a third-generation descendant of a prominent family, arrives drenched in sweat at the office located on the fifth floor of a shabby apartment building without an elevator.
--- p.6
Dogatta picked up the catalog again.
A beautiful ruby named 'Love for Ten Thousand Years'.
No, it was a jewel that gave off an inexplicable sense of fear rather than being beautiful.
--- p.21
“The suspect and the detective in charge of the missing person case that shook the world.
But now the two of them are friends.
“Even when I think about it again, it’s a really strange relationship.”
--- p.27
… … As I mentioned last time, there is a dress code for tonight’s dinner party.
Anything is fine, but I'd like you to wear something white.
Of course, you can wear all white from head to toe, or just wear a white neckerchief.
--- p.38
“……Isn’t that right, Mr. Dogatta?”
… … In this situation, there’s no way a murder can’t happen, right?
--- p.50
Finally, a fierce storm raged outside.
The sound of the wind blowing through the trees resonated terribly like the ground rumbling.
--- p.115
How many people still remember that incident that shook the world at the time?
The incident began 45 years ago in 1978, when Utako Fujitani, a housewife in her forties who lived in the Tama New Town complex, disappeared while shopping at a nearby supermarket as usual.
--- p.121
Rather, the more she sweated profusely as if her sweat glands were broken, and the more the soda-flavored ice cream bar melted away in her mouth, the more the situation piled up, making it seem as if Fujitani Utako had simply vanished at some point on her way to the supermarket.
--- pp.125-126
He ends up killing his past.
--- p.172
There was a faint sense of agony in Sakamaki's speech.
There was a sorrow so cruel that I couldn't bear to look at it, as if someone was trying to destroy something I had cherished with my own hands.
--- p.210
We've already had plenty of lonely experiences.
--- p.315
“His name is Shuichi Yoshida, and he’s actually my senior, so we’ve known each other for a long time.”

Publisher's Review
An unidentified jewel, a cryptic will
A mystery unfolding on an island in the middle of a storm
One day, Ranpei, a private detective in Yokohama, receives a strange request from the grandson of the founder of a famous department store.
His grandfather, Umeda Sogo, who lives in seclusion on a remote island after retirement, goes on a quest every night to find a jewel called "Ten Thousand Years of Love."
Ranpei is asked to uncover the secret of this jewel, and is invited to the island mansion where Umeda Sougo's birthday party is being held.
A diverse group of people gather there, including the Umeda family, the mansion's staff, and even a former police inspector involved in an unsolved case from 45 years ago.
However, a fierce typhoon hits the island, leaving them completely isolated, and the party's star, Sogo Umeda, suddenly disappears.
All he left behind was a cryptic sentence in his will.
Lanfei and the party attendees must work together to solve this mystery by finding clues hidden throughout the island.
Everyone there stared intently at the single piece of paper.
I have my will from last night.
That's all that was written on the paper.

“What should we call the crime opposite to murder?”
A mystery human drama that leaves a lasting impression
“I wanted to challenge myself with a story that was different from the works I’ve released so far, something I’ve never attempted before.
So, I took on new challenges in terms of style and expression.
The title of this work, which is open to multiple interpretations, ultimately finds some meaning in the end.
“I wanted to write a novel that makes people think about the existence of humans.” _From an interview with the author in the Sankei Shimbun
In an interview about "Sin, Loving Ten Thousand Years," Shuichi Yoshida revealed that this work contains a strong desire to write a completely new story featuring "vivid, living, bleeding people."
In fact, the novel unfolds in a unique structure, set in a kind of secret room called an isolated island, with theatrical and unique characters telling their own memories and continuing the mystery.
Here, the author's unique critical awareness, which sharply illuminates the dark shadows of modern society, is naturally incorporated, and the narrative expands beyond a simple mystery into a deep and weighty story that illuminates human existence and social scars.
The author's conviction to "write about humans" and his new challenge are condensed into "Sin, Loving for Ten Thousand Years," a mystery drama that will deliver genre-specific pleasure and deep resonance.
“His works, which embody his desire to ‘write about humanity’ in literature, are special in that they are always in touch with reality, while at the same time staring into an invisible abyss.
(······) 《Sin, Loving Ten Thousand Years》 goes beyond the appearance of a mystery surrounding a jewel and can be said to be a work that stares head-on at the dark shadows of post-war Japanese society and the wounds of human existence.” _From the ‘Translator’s Note’
Praise from Japanese bookstore employees
★★★★★ “I saw the miracle of storytelling.”
★★★★★ “It’s a mystery, but please prepare a handkerchief as well.”
★★★★★ “I couldn’t help but shed tears at the last sentence.”
★★★★★ “A miraculous mystery, a tender sin that will be etched into your soul.”
★★★★★ “An unforgettable story that will bring you to tears and keep you coming back for more!”
Translator's Note
At the center of the story lies the jewel, 'Love for Ten Thousand Years'.
However, it is not a superficial property value, but a symbol that condenses the memories of a family and the shadow of war.
(······) 《Sin, Loving Ten Thousand Years》 goes beyond the appearance of a mystery surrounding a jewel and can be said to be a work that stares head-on at the dark shadows of post-war Japanese society and the wounds of human existence.
The question the author poses is not the identity of the culprit, but the fundamental question of “who lost what, and what were they trying to protect?”
