Book Introduction
A new anthology novel collection themed on "Walking"

A new anthology novel collection, 『Walking』, in which five novelists write together on one topic, has been published by Open Books.
『Hada Anthology』 is a collection of short stories written by 25 novelists, themed around the verb 『hada』, about five actions we do every day: walking, asking, seeing, listening, and knowing.
The first anthology, “Walking,” featured Kim Yu-dam, Seong Hae-na, Lee Joo-hye, Lim Seon-woo, and Lim Hyeon.
Kim Yu-dam's "Pretending Not to Be There", which confronts the real life of the time and captures the individual identity of women in a unique rhythm, contains the story of the protagonist who grew up like sisters with her aunt's daughter at her aunt's house since childhood.
But, without becoming true sisters, her cousin's life seems to go awry from one day on, and eventually, she becomes worried about where and how 『Min-ah』 lives with her aunt, and whether she should pretend not to exist as her aunt said.
Seong Hae-na's "Afterlife", which shows a deep and sophisticated composition in each work and presents unique characters, reflects on the thoughts of "Andrea," who ran a hardware store for 38 years, "regressing alone" by walking backwards as advised by her doctor, and the times she spent with "Club Sans Souci," a jazz bar that has been in the same neighborhood for decades, and its owner, "Cecil."
The meaning of 『Sangsusi』 is revealed at the end of the text, accompanied by a beautiful jazz song.

In "Because It's June," charming narrator Lee Ju-hye, who deeply and delicately depicts ordinary people's relationships and the pain and issues of understanding that surround them, describes the young protagonist, who recently separated from his wife, encounters not only a woman he finds three days after leaving the track at a local park, but also a man who asks him to look after his wife, saying he urgently needs to go to the bathroom.
What does the man's wife look like, and where is my wife and what is she doing?
Meanwhile, the intriguingly titled "Walking a Ghost Dog" is a short story that highlights Lim Seon-woo's unique charm of naturally incorporating quiet and clever fantasy into everyday life.
Haji, a thirteen-year-old English Cocker Spaniel that my sister brought home from an animal shelter and then abandoned back to me, died suddenly from cardiomyopathy three months after coming to me.
Haji came back a month after he died, and I took Haji, who had become a pale ghost dog, for a walk to his favorite place.
Lim Hyeon, who decorated the end of 『Walking』, delicately touches on human contradictions and flaws with restrained sentences, making the reader feel tension.
In "Slowly Dispersing," Myeong-gil, who spends his days wondering "Why on earth do people do that?", talks about "Seong-hee," whom he met in a writing class, about his "him" from long ago, and about the many thoughts that fill his head while walking.

Into the book
The day before my aunt had breast cancer surgery, she drove four hours to Seoul.
--- From "First Sentence"

The uphill climb was followed by a gentle downhill climb.
As I was going downhill, my soles and calves were very tense.
The soles of my feet were sore.
I didn't know that what was more bitter was my heart.

--- From "Kim Yu-dam, Pretend It Doesn't Exist"

Geunseong slowly turns his body and walks forward.
At first it's slow, but then it picks up speed a little.
Never look back, until old friends are out of sight.

--- From "Seong Hae-na, Candidate (後步)"

all.
To live.
Put in effort.
Walking.
It's running.
To die.
No.
To live.
Because I'm going to die.
To live.

--- From "Lee Joo-hye, Because It's June"

Walk slowly and stop occasionally.
Wandering around the neighborhood without a destination, gradually changing the scenery in front of you.
The long-awaited walk was surprisingly pleasant, but there was one problem.

--- From "Im Seon-woo, Walking a Ghost Dog"

Myeonggil thought that a walk was just a walk and that it had no other meaning, but after hearing it, it seemed strange.
A walk is about scattering.
The act of scattering by devising a plan.
The act of devising a plan to disperse.
--- From "Im Hyeon, Slowly Dispersing"

Publisher's Review
Kim Yu-dam, "Pretend It Doesn't Exist"

When I was given the topic of ‘walking’, the first thing that came to mind was the image of elderly people walking barefoot.
Lately, I've been seeing a lot of people walking barefoot in the park near my house, and middle-aged and elderly women are especially noticeable.
Whenever I walk in the park (I don't walk barefoot), I secretly observe people walking barefoot and research the benefits of walking barefoot.
The original title was "Walking Barefoot," and the description of barefoot walking was a bit more extensive than it is now. However, after reviewing the manuscript, I realized that it needed more of a story about why the character in the novel is obsessed with walking barefoot, rather than the act of walking barefoot, so I revised it.
This novel was completed with the thought that we all have at least one person in our hearts whom we would like to erase and pretend does not exist.

Seong Hae-na, "The Aftermath"

People who retreat into the back alleys of life are often said to have regressed.
I would like to rephrase this by saying that they are not regressing but rather taking steps backwards.
People who take the next step backwards, not forwards.
I wanted to capture in my novel a candidate who looks back and reorganizes and accepts life anew.
Jazz, which the main character Andrea loves, is also called a ‘decline genre’, but jazz, too, seems to be on the path of succession rather than decline.
So, when I listen to a new variation of a standard jazz piece, I think of the scene of the old and new generations taking a walk together.
A walk backwards.
Isn't it romantic?

Lee Joo-hye, "Because It's June"

I was very sick last winter.
I was afraid that if I stayed still, anxiety would consume me completely, so I moved my body without fail.
I went to a park within walking distance of my neighborhood.
It had been over two years since I moved, but it was a park I had never been to.
Contrary to my fears, the park at midnight was very crowded.
There were more people walking and running than I thought.
I also sneaked in among those people and walked along with them.
I always walked alone.
As I walked, winter turned into spring.
Even though it was night, the flowers blooming on the trees were bright like lanterns.
A woman running past me said to her friend.
Oh my, I'm out of breath.
My friend said.
What if I die while running to survive? The two women laughed.
In the space-time transition from winter to spring, many people were walking and running to survive, as if they were about to die.
As spring was ripening, a friend contacted me.
They say that the barley tree has bloomed at the royal tomb near my house.
The scent is amazing.
I went there right away.
We walked around the grave together, looking at the barley flowers and smelling their fragrance.
The life that bloomed next to death was so splendid that I felt ashamed, but it also made me want to live that much more.

Lim Seon-woo, "Walking a Ghost Dog"

From the moment I decided to write a novel about walking, I knew I wanted to feature a dog as the main character.
I wanted to write a novel about the joy of walking, and there's no better creature for that than a dog.

Lim Hyeon, "Slowly Dispersing"

People often compare life to a journey, but I hope the rest of my life will be more like a walk than a journey.
I want to live each day monotonously and consistently, familiarly yet indifferently, within the bounds of what is predictable.
I also know that it is a very difficult plan to achieve.
Instead, wouldn't it be possible to write a story about someone who lives that kind of life?
When you walk along the neighborhood trail, you sometimes encounter people you don't know but are familiar with.
People who can neither say they know nor say they don't know.
I hope that this novel will be read that way by some people.
