Book Introduction
The only poetry collection left by French symbolist poet Charles Baudelaire

The poetry collection "Flowers of Evil" by Charles Baudelaire, a representative French symbolist poet with a strong and provocative title, has been republished with the original 1857 first edition cover design by The Story.
This collection of poems contains almost all of the verse works written by the poet Baudelaire from the 1840s until his sudden death in 1867.

What is the story behind this poetry collection, which caused a huge scandal upon its publication, leading to a ban and fines? Let's delve into the world of Symbolist poetry through the 105 artistic poems included in the first edition of "Flowers of Evil," prepared by The Story to commemorate the poet's 200th birthday.

Pursuing 'beauty' in 'evil'

The expression "Flowers of Evil," which is unfamiliar even to today's readers, makes one think of Baudelaire's disorderly life, that is, the author's reality, and interpret it in connection with it. However, it actually stemmed from the author's deep reflection and long-term exploration of poetry in general, that is, poetics.
And Baudelaire didn't even choose this as the title in the first place.
The title he had in mind in 1847 was Les Lesbiennes, and the title he announced in 1850 was Les Limbes, which he said were intended to “express the wavering and melancholy of modern youth.”
And when the publisher Auguste Poulet-Malassy suggested titles for his critical works to Baudelaire, he said, “I like enigmatic or noisy titles.
So, in keeping with the current trend of pursuing a complex, diverse, and harmonious life, Charles Baudelaire's "Les Fleurs de Mal," which changed the genre of poetry not only in France but also around the world, is once again at the center of attention.
