Into the book
The autumn sky that year was unusually thick and dark.
Could it be because countless artificial satellites launched above the ozone layer have long since reached the end of their lifespan and densely filled the sky?
Thanks to this, the sky, filled with space debris, was no longer blue.
It has become difficult to distinguish between cumulus clouds and fog.
The world seemed hazy and pale, as if looking at a photograph full of noise, as if a layer had been added.
Because of this, crops did not grow well.
--- p.7
Why was I born into this world where it's hard to make a living?
Unfortunately, I loved oil painting.
Lee Woo-hwan loved Lee Kwai-dae and Yun Hyeong-geun.
I graduated from art school because I loved oil painting.
I remember the days before I started doing art, when I wore stiff summer uniforms that were full of glue.
In both hands, I held the cheap easel, palette, and brush that my mother had bought me.
The brush would often split into several pieces after being dipped in detergent for only a few times.
The lake on the canvas was always small.
--- pp.9~10
Perhaps due to childhood trauma, Mia was extremely reluctant to talk about her personal life, and for a while, no one spoke to her.
However, she was a person of action rather than words.
She was an anarchist within the school.
The incident where students blocked the keyholes of all classrooms on campus with glue guns, claiming they were committing terrorism to refuse coercive classes, was famous.
But despite these antics, Mia survived.
Because the professors loved her work so much.
In particular, the critique time was nothing more than a time of praise for Mia.
Everyone sat around and confessed.
Under Mia's work, he had to confess how ugly his own work was.
--- pp.22~23
I have to live with Mia from now on.
You have to live with Mia, a strange, eccentric, bizarre, and absolute artist.
I asked again.
“Then Mia must have had a roommate before.
“Where did he go?” “Ella went back to her country.
Have you seen the news about Nauru being attacked by an armed group? Ella is from Nauru.
He said he returned home because his family was in danger.
This is a big deal.
If art schools were overflowing with people, war wouldn't break out...
Especially Germany, anyway, the world is not normal, so you should be careful too.
“Actually, sharing a room with Mia is nothing special.”
--- p.30
The first thought that came to my mind at that time was that I wanted to take Mia's life away from her, however petty it may be.
shit.
If that had been my experience, I would have already been known as a genius and known to the world.
I wish I could have approached the audience more kindly than Mia.
I had that thought.
Because I have the opportunity and time to work harder than Mia.
All the time I was listening to Mia's story, I wanted to take away even Mia's misfortune.
If all of those actions stemmed from Mia's life and misfortune, then I wanted to become a great artist even if it meant taking it away.
I wanted to have a name like that.
But even if I died and woke up, I couldn't become Mia.
--- pp.46~47
The Cultural Riots happened the year after I graduated from school, in 2073.
The starting point was a paper by Dr. Boris Zalansky, a renowned environmental scientist and Nobel Peace Prize winner.
The content of the paper was simple.
Having lost one of the world's three largest granaries, 43 percent of the population barely survives on two meals a day, and the energy consumed to preserve cultural heritage is simply too much.
The impact of the paper was enormous.
News headlines around the world have been flooded with stories about the high cost of preserving culture.
The first auction house disappeared.
And then there was a riot that destroyed the art gallery.

Publisher's Review
“I came here to become an artist who paints pictures.
“I came here to become ‘Untitled.’”
Author Lee So-ho's first novel, "My Crazy Neighbor," was published as part of Wisdom House's short story series, Wipick.
Since Lee So-ho received enthusiastic attention from the literary world with his poetry collection, "Catcalling," which boldly exposed the violent and intimate aspects of everyday life in the most extraordinary language, he has continued to write passionately, publishing poetry and prose collections in succession.
"My Crazy Neighbor" reflects the interest in art and the inspiration he received from it that has been discovered in his previous works.
In particular, this book is made even more interesting by including photos taken by the author himself of Berlin, the setting of the novel.
A near future where even the problem of making a living is difficult to solve due to extreme climate change and food crisis.
The narrator of the work, Yuri, unfortunately loves art, and “loves Lee U-fan, Lee Quede, and Yun Hyung-geun” (page 10), and after completing her art studies in Berlin, she returns to Korea.
In a world where all works of art have disappeared in the so-called "cultural riots" of 2073, Yuri works as a media artist restoring lost masterpieces, and visits Berlin for the first time in a long time for his first overseas exhibition.
And he thinks of 'Mia', who was his roommate when he was studying at the Berlin University of the Arts.
The memories of that time that Yuri unfolds upon returning to Berlin are full of belated confessions that she was unable to finish.
“Mia, the strange, eccentric, bizarre, and absolute artist” (p. 30).
He is a stateless refugee from a small island nation, gifted with artistic genius, but without money, without family, and without a country, he is constantly at odds with himself.
On the other hand, Yuri, who has everything Mia wants, even if it's not great, but because she doesn't have talent, she longs for Mia's life and even her misfortune.
The story of two people who passionately loved art will bring a painfully longing romance to those who have something they longed for but never could.
50 stories in 50 books in one year
A special experience that allows you to breathe deeply into 'a single story'
Beginning in November 2022, Wisdom House will be introducing the most diverse and newest stories of Korean literature, one per week, through its short story serial project, "Weekly Fiction."
The series is released every Wednesday through the Wisdom House website and newsletter 'We Pick'.
Starting with author Koo Byeong-mo's "Shred," 50 stories are scheduled to meet readers over the course of a year.
The Wepick series publishes novels that have finished serialization in this way sequentially.
Starting with the first five stories on March 8th, four stories will be published every second Wednesday of the month, for a total of 50 story festivals throughout the year.
This time, rather than the conventional method of binding together several short stories, the book is composed of only one short story, an unusual attempt that provides readers with a special experience of breathing deeply into each story.
Wepick is not bound by any criteria or distinctions such as material or format, and focuses solely on the completeness of a single story.
Through novels by a variety of authors, including novelists, nonfiction writers, poets, and youth literature writers, we break down genres and boundaries, expanding the possibilities and enjoyment of stories.
There is also a special gift inside the book.
This is a supplementary poster titled 'One Novel', which contains an entire novel on one poster.
A single novel offers readers the special experience of encountering a story in a new way.
