Book Introduction
Special recover edition commemorating the 100th printing of the Korean version!

William Paul Young's novel "The Shack," which has resonated with and comforted many Korean readers since its publication in Korean in 2009, has finally surpassed its 100th printing.
The Shack, which has sold over 20 million copies worldwide, is back with a special reissue edition.
While the original cover focused on the symbolism of the 'hut', a space in the heart that hides a wounded soul, the special edition of the recovery focuses on the inner transformation of the protagonist who opens the door to the hut and enters, gaining an enlightenment he had not thought of and becoming fulfilled.
Additionally, it is significant that it includes William Paul Young's autograph and a message to Korean readers to commemorate the 100th printing.

Published in Korean for eight years, "The Shack" has been a steady seller, loved by both Christian and non-Christian readers for its message that is not bound by doctrine or institutions.
Former Minister of Culture Lee Eo-ryeong praised the book as “a shelter for families overcoming despair in dark times, and a shelter for the soul.”
Let's reminisce about the excitement of eight years ago with "The Shack," which has returned in a special edition commemorating its 100th printing.

Into the book
Mac looked into her eyes again and asked.
Papa didn't answer and just looked down at their hands.
His gaze followed hers, and Mac noticed the scar on her wrist for the first time.
He guessed that Jesus might have had just such a wound.
She allowed him to gently caress the edges of her deep wound.
Finally he looked up into her eyes.
Tears flowed down the flour stains on my cheeks, creating a small path.
"Have you ever considered the considerable cost my son's choices have exacted on us? Love always leaves a profound mark.
We were together then.”
She spoke in a soft, warm voice.
Mac was surprised.
“A cross? Wait a minute, I thought you abandoned him.
Didn't Jesus say, 'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?' (Matthew 27:46)?”
It was a Bible verse he always remembered when he was in 'great sorrow'.
“You are misunderstanding the mystery of that time.
“No matter what Jesus felt at the time, I never left him.”
“How can you say such a thing? You have abandoned Jesus, just as you have abandoned me!”
“Mackenzie, I have never abandoned Jesus, and I have never abandoned you.”
“I don’t understand.”
He accepted it.
“I know that.
At least you don't understand now.
But have you ever thought that if you only look at your own suffering, you won't see me?
When Mac didn't respond, she left him alone and went back to cooking.
It seemed like they were preparing several dishes at once, adding various seasonings and ingredients.
She hummed softly as she trimmed the pie and pushed it into the oven.
“Don’t forget that the story doesn’t end with Jesus feeling abandoned.
Jesus found his own way and came completely into my hands.
Oh, that was such an amazing moment!”
Mac leaned against the counter in a daze.
My emotions and thoughts were all jumbled up.
I wanted to believe everything Papa said.
That would be truly amazing! But somewhere in his heart, a loud cry of 'That can't be true!'

From a rejected manuscript to a bestseller

William Paul Young, author of The Shack, wrote this book as a Christmas present for his six children, and gave 15 copies of the finished manuscript to his children and friends.
I began looking for a publisher at the strong recommendation of people around me who were impressed by the manuscript.
Paul Young, whose manuscripts were repeatedly rejected for various reasons, published his own book in 2007 with two pastors he was acquainted with, and opened a website to sell the book.
Only after it sold over a million copies did it officially start being sold in bookstores.
A bestseller by word of mouth alone, The Shack has sold over 20 million copies worldwide and has been inducted into the World's Top 100 Best-Selling Books Hall of Fame.

A letter from God

Mackenzie,
Long time no see.
I missed you.

Because I'm going to be at the cabin next weekend
If you want to meet me, come find me.

- Papa

Papa's letter asking to meet again at the cabin was a great event.
Does God send letters? But why does he ask us to meet in a hut, a symbol of the deepest pain? If he were God, he would meet us in a better place.

The Pilgrim's Progress of this era - Swallowing the 'Great Sorrow' within me

This novel tells the story of Mac Phillips.
Mac's youngest daughter, Missy, is kidnapped during a family camping trip.
Although the daughter's body was never found, police uncover evidence of a brutal murder in an abandoned forest cabin by a notorious serial killer who preys only on children.
Four years later, Mac, who has been living in the shadow of the 'Great Sorrow', receives a note from God (called 'Papa' in the novel) asking him to come to the cabin.

Unable to predict what would happen, Mac visits the scene of the incident where the 'great sorrow' began and experiences a weekend encounter with Papa there.
The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of the Trinity each appear in human form.
God is a large black woman, Jesus is a worker from the Middle East, and the Holy Spirit is an Asian woman.
Mac also has the opportunity to meet Sophia, a woman of wisdom from the Book of Proverbs.

Through long and profound conversations and sometimes heated debates with the three people in the cabin, Mac, who is immersed in 'great sorrow,' the author organically connects and unravels not only the question of the Trinity, which has been a subject of debate even within theology, but also various social and religious issues.
It also vividly shows the loss of faith in humans and God's love and teachings.
Through this process, his faith is broken down into pieces and then put back together again.
As we expected, he leaves the cabin a changed man.

A place to be free from all moments, the cabin

"The Shack" seeks to answer the question that people always face as they live their lives: "Where is God in a world filled with unspeakable suffering?"
Most of us have our own sorrows, our own broken dreams, our own broken hearts, our own sense of loss and our own 'huts'.
A father, grieving the loss of his daughter, is led by a revelation from God to the very cabin where his daughter was kidnapped and murdered – the very place where the 'suffering' began.
The pain we create for ourselves makes us sad and miserable.

What he realized in 'The Shack' is what moved and transformed readers around the world.
Through this book, I hope you too will discover grace like Mac, and that Papa, Jesus, and Sarayu will dwell within you, filling your empty inner self with unspeakable joy and abundant glory.
