Recipe World
Description
Book Introduction
"Recipe World" is a work that started from the idea that when ordinary everyday ingredients or actions are combined in a specific way, a "recipe", a "useless but unique ability" is created.
The story of Hong, a red-cheeked high school student descended from a "farting daughter-in-law," who finally overcomes her shame and saves the world with her farts, "Fart Warrior Red-cheeked," the story of Seolgi's "domestic adventure" of a twin mother who blinks like a broken fluorescent light and suddenly makes her husband disappear, and "Night of the Living Cucumbers," which deals with the last days of cucumber haters who are suddenly forced to face a horde of zombies, are three novels in a series that show a sense of reality that could happen around us right now, while also providing fun that far exceeds the reader's imagination.
Another interesting aspect of this work is exploring the secret government agency, the 'Republic of Korea Recipe Research Bureau', which serves as a link between each story.

Writer Baek Seung-hwa has warmly portrayed the growth stories of simple yet special people with special abilities in his works “Walking King” and “Omok Girl.”
This work, "Recipe World," also humorously captures people who seem to lack something but each possess their own extraordinary qualities, and reveals the author's unique charm of offering clever consolation.
As you follow the story, you will find yourself laughing, but before you know it, you will find yourself with a stinging sensation.

Into the book
You might be confused about what this story is about: a high school girl eating Pepero and jumping over a wall, but this story is all based on things I have personally experienced or heard.
Well then, I guess I should clarify it here.
My name is Hong.
So, I am a descendant of a farting daughter-in-law.

“Morse code?!”
That's right.
Short signal is pooh, long signal is pooh.
The reporter on the screen asked.
“What kind of signal is that! What did you say?”
“I said, ‘Oh my gosh, that’s not happening.’
“In Morse code.”
The reporter went on a wild ride, saying that it was the first time he had actually heard Morse code, something you only see in war movies, and that it was a fart.
Afterwards, Bang Ok-mi showed off various farting techniques.
Not only did he beatbox with his farts, he even did voice impersonations with his farts. When he imitated the legendary comedian Lee Ju-il, the reporter laughed and even cried.
While the reporter, the narrator, and the studio hosts were all laughing so hard they couldn't come to their senses, only Bang Ok-mi remained serious until the very end.

The kitchen work was still busy.
But now I can handle the material preparation on my own.
Phew!
It was the sound of my fart.
I was so busy that I didn't even realize I had missed it, but suddenly the kitchen staff stopped what they were doing, came over to me, and clapped.
Clap clap clap!
“I finally realized it.
“That farts are nothing.”

Aunt Okmi held my hand tightly and said.
“Remember.
“You are the daughter of a fart warrior.”
“He is also the nephew of the owner of a famous restaurant.”
When I answered, Aunt Okmi laughed.
As I was about to leave, a staff member came running and handed me a plastic bag.
“Take it and eat it.”
It was full of corn and potatoes.
“I’m going to rescue my friends now.”
“Then, after you save it, share it with your friends.”
It was reckless.
I even packed it neatly in a small bag with red beans.
After bowing, he took off with a peach-flavored candy in his mouth.
My aunt and the staff waved until I was out of sight.

A large, middle-aged man, sweating profusely even in the middle of winter, spoke while holding binoculars.
“I think this is it.”
A girl who looked to be in middle school, leaning against the railing, answered indifferently while fiddling with an old cell phone that looked like a walkie-talkie.
“I see.
Because it's closer to this than that.
“But it’s not that yet.”
“Does that mean… it’s time for us to step forward?”
The girl said as she left the rooftop.
“Maybe next time.”

One day, Seolgi felt something flickering.
Blink blink.
At first I thought the fluorescent light in the living room had reached the end of its lifespan.
I asked my husband to change it, but it was still the same for a week.
After holding it in for a while, I called my husband and asked what was going on, and he replied with a smug look that it had happened last week.
But it's still blinking?
Seolgi looked up at the flickering fluorescent lights while carrying the twins in her arms.
Then I found out.
That blinking thing isn't a fluorescent light.

--- p.171

Seolgi thought as she watched Gulliver calmly continue the investigation despite the unbelievable testimony.
What on earth does the Republic of Korea Recipe Research Institute do? Is it a place that develops Korean cuisine to be introduced to the world? Are those two people famous Korean chefs? No, probably not.
Don't movies sometimes feature secret agencies that do things other than what their names suggest?
My husband is gone, my house is upside down, my appliances are running wild… This is probably…

--- p.200

Seolgi stood there in shock for a while, unable to close her mouth.
My husband owns appliances? I couldn't believe it.
Seolgi approached the rice cooker and spoke carefully to the lid.
“Hey, honey?”
“Mixed grains, quick!”
omg.
“If it’s really you… Okay, say vegetable pot rice.”
“Vegetable rice in a pot!”
Seolgi staggered for a moment.

“Now, listen carefully.
That's what a recipe is.
So, it refers to a phenomenon that occurs when seemingly ordinary objects, actions, situations, emotions, and experiences are placed under certain conditions or are combined by chance.
It's because most people don't know, but these kinds of phenomena happen quite often around us.
Let me give you an example. When crossing a crosswalk.
Put a 500 won coin, minted in 1991, in your pocket, step only on the white line, and sing the children's song, "Open Dongdaemun, Dong Dong." If you do that, the green light will be about 3 seconds shorter.
Now, the odds of all these situations coming together by chance are low, but they're not zero, and sometimes problematic recipes do arise.
So what happens now? I showed you my ID earlier, didn't I? We, the investigators from the Recipe Investigation Bureau, are here to resolve this…
--- p.204

“In fact, people like us who don’t eat cucumbers are more likely to be sensitive to cucurbitacins.
It's a genetic problem.
“The type of the ‘TAS2R38’ gene on chromosome 7 is different from that of normal people.”
I was impressed by Mr. Nammo's ability to easily explain unfamiliar knowledge.
"How do you memorize all that? Even if it's your major?"
Mr. Nammo looked at me with sharp eyes and answered.
“It has nothing to do with your major.
Because people keep telling me to eat cucumbers everywhere.
“If you base it on scientific evidence, it can be resolved.”
"ah…."

Recipe World

"Recipe World" is a comic fantasy novel based on a unique worldview in which mysterious phenomena occur when ordinary everyday ingredients or actions coincidentally form specific combinations.
Each story in "Recipe World" captivates readers with its exquisite balance between absurd imagination and hyperrealism.

〈Fart Warrior Ball Red〉 is a fun combination of two words that seem unlikely to go together: fart and high school girl.
Hong, a high school girl who is a descendant of the folktale 'Farting Daughter-in-Law', wants to hide the fact that she has the ability to fart and appear like an ordinary high school girl, but begins training to reach the realm of 'Fart Oneness' in order to save her friends who are in danger.
The quirky charm of Hong, who is shy and blushes easily, the villain who wants to become a giant, and the people around him who help him will make you smile throughout the reading.

"Blinking Twin Mom" is a work like "Vanilla Iced Latte" that comforts mothers who are tired of raising children.
Seolgi feels like she's flickering like a broken fluorescent light.
One day, when there was no significant improvement despite receiving psychiatric counseling, Seol-gi tried to show her 'blinking' self to her husband, who was half-listening to her complaints, but ended up making her husband disappear instead.
Seol-gi, who is in a state of confusion, sets out to find a recipe to bring back her missing husband, accompanied by two mysterious people.
It is a 'domestic adventure drama' that is full of spectacular charm even though it takes place inside a house.

"Night of the Living Cucumbers," which depicts the last days of those who are suddenly confronted by a horde of zombies, is a delightful gift for cucumber haters who dream of a world without cucumbers.

Are those pigeons that gather in the same spot every day really pigeons? Could there be some mysterious secret in the Subway sandwich ingredient combination that no one has tried before? Why does the intricate pattern on a manhole cover resemble a treasure map? Could that elderly man, so devoted to outdoor exercise equipment, be a secret agent waiting to be contacted?

As I continued to fantasize about something so useless, I suddenly had this thought.
What if ordinary, everyday events, combined with a low probability, could lead to something magical? What if we called those combinations "recipes"?
- From the author's words

How can I create an interesting story?
I can definitely say that the role of a good storyteller is the most important.

- Broccoli You Too, from the recommendation of Yoon Deok-won

Director Baek Seung-hwa, who has warmly and humorously captured the coming-of-age stories of those with shortcomings in the films “Walking King” and “Omok Girl,” has now moved his gaze to novels.
The author keenly captures even the smallest details of everyday life, vividly portraying a world of absurd yet whimsical imagination as if it were a story happening around us.
Add to this his unique, quirky and clever humor, and his warm affection for the characters, and he naturally draws the reader into the story.
Instead of the grandeur of a hero story, readers can get the warmth of a sweet potato brought to rescue friends, and feel a subtle pleasure along with laughter from the husband who has become a rice cooker and desperately calls for "rice cooked in a pot of vegetables."

Based on the sensibility he developed as a film director, the author incorporated cinematic rhythm into his writing.
The vivid sentences, as if the scene were unfolding before your eyes, provide readers with the immersion and enjoyment of a 'readable movie' through text instead of a screen.

Seolgi stood there in shock for a while, unable to close her mouth.
My husband owns appliances? I couldn't believe it.

It was just randomly funny
Finally, it makes the tip of your nose tingle
Recipe for comfort and encouragement

The greatest appeal of "Recipe World" is its exquisite balance of making readers laugh out loud and then moving them to tears.
The moment Hong, who couldn't accept his fate of becoming a fart warrior, reveals his identity to save his friends, and the moment Seol-gi, who wanted to be the best mother, realizes what she truly wanted, readers will feel an unexpected and profound resonance.

Life often breaks down, and we are all clumsy, but what keeps us going isn't grand heroic tales, but small acts of courage, the small comfort and warmth of someone next to us.
The author conveys this emotion, a mixture of laughter and affection, in a cheerful manner, offering comfort to someone who feels inadequate, saying, "It's okay."
《Recipe World》, which will make you laugh for a long time and then make your nose tingle, will make your daily life a little warmer and more special.
