Land Ethics Commentary

Into the book
“In just a few weeks, the smallest flower, the Draba, will burst into tiny flower buds the size of specks of dust all over the sandy ground.
Drava needs warmth and comfort too, but just a little bit is enough.
Drava lives in the waste of time and space.
There are only a few lines about Drava in the plant book, and not a single picture.
Even sandy soil and weak sunlight, which are too barren to produce larger and more showy flowers, are enough for Drava.
After all, Drava is not a spring flower.
“It is just a postscript of hope.”

“Now, as the kettle sings and this fine oak log glows red on the white ashes, I ponder these things.
When spring comes, this ashes must be returned to the orchard at the foot of the sand dunes.
It will probably come back to me as an oak tree, either as a red apple or thanks to the diligence of some fat October squirrel who, without knowing why, just diligently plants an acorn.”

“If we interpret history ecologically, we can see that humans are in fact just one member of the community of life.
Many historical events that have so far been explained solely as human activities were actually the vital interactions between people and the land.
“The characteristics of the land have influenced historical facts as strongly as the characteristics of the people who lived on it.”

Publisher's Review
A beautiful classic that transcends time and generations
The greatest ecological thinking and writing of the 20th century

The norms and order that must be observed socially are called 'ethics'.
In order to maintain a society and community where people depend on each other, it is necessary to distinguish between social and antisocial behavior.
This is why we need a ‘standard’ called ethics.
So, what kind of ethics would be needed if we expanded the scope of community beyond human society to include the Earth, nature, and the ecosystem?

American agricultural scientist Aldo Leopold bought an old farmhouse on the banks of the Wisconsin River in the mid-1930s.
In this place, which he calls "Sand County," he observes the changing ecosystem with each season, including the changes in grass and trees and the chorus of birds, and looks into his inner self.
The book prepared in this way is the essay 『Twelve Months of the Sand Army』, written during the last ten years of his life.
This book, which broadened the horizons of ethics and emphasized the importance of the environment, has long been established as the 'bible' of the modern environmental movement.
In this book, the author defines the concept of 'land ethics'.
Nations, driven by the logic of growth, corporations, for accumulation and profit, and individuals, for the purpose of realizing their overflowing desires, are conquering and objectifying land.
For this reason, the author argues that a 'land ethic' does not exist in our society.

Land simply symbolizes wealth, and people travel around the country looking for good real estate and speculating.
The government reclaims seas and tidal flats, destroys mountains, and digs up rivers.
The end of such desires could lead to the destruction of the Earth community.
Humans are just one of the many living things that exist in the ecosystem.
If we are unaware of our own status and constantly destroy and damage other living things, the interdependence of the ecosystem will collapse, putting the entire ecosystem at risk.
This book emphasizes that even a single, insignificant bacterium is directly or indirectly connected to human life.
