The grass, trees, rocks, and streams we encounter in nature are all the best toys!
An education expert who has met children in kindergartens for the past 40 years
155 fun, colorful, and exciting forest activities that you can create and experience yourself!
There are many difficult and regrettable aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic over the past two years, but when I look back on the lives of children, the first thing that comes to mind is the long-term disconnection from nature, which provides so much inspiration and energy.
During those times when it was difficult for children to go outside and play to their heart's content, they often spent long periods of time absorbed in games and TV.
"Grandma's Forest Tea Room," a collection of 155 different forest activities learned from nature throughout the four seasons, is a great book to read with children on outings to parks or forests as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to decline.
Author Jeon Myeong-ok, who wrote this book, majored in horticulture in college and founded Dream Tree Kindergarten in 1986, which she has run in the same location for 36 years.
After completing a course in early childhood education at graduate school, I am currently teaching by incorporating nature ecology and picture books into the kindergarten curriculum. In particular, I wrote this book after watching my two granddaughters' imagination and observation skills grow rapidly through forest tea parties that I started with them in 2018.

Publisher's Review
Most of the existing forest play books are theory books or guidebooks for forest teachers.
In contrast, "Grandma's Forest Playroom" is a collection of various activities using natural materials that are easy to obtain and safe, and materials that pique children's curiosity, for parents who want to play in the forest with their children, grandparents who help raise them, and teachers in the educational field.
The play style is broadly divided into four seasons, and then further divided into parts used as play materials, such as branches, leaves, flowers, and fruits, to organize which parts of which plants can be used for activities at which time.
Among the 155 forest games featured in this book, one that the author creatively devised is the game of combining azaleas and dandelions, which is already widely known among forest interpreters.
It is said that a long time ago, a child got a hint from picking up azalea flowers that had fallen from a tree branch.
Another example is the game played with a persimmon.
The usefulness of the persimmon tree was gradually learned while playing in the forest. Children really like it because they can do it on their own without having to ask for help from adults.
Forest play ideas come from constantly thinking about how to use natural objects that could be used as toys, and sometimes from watching my granddaughters play.
Let's take this book and visit a place close to home, with a good natural environment, and somewhere untouched by human influence.
Leave the tablets and toys at home and go out into nature with your child to have fun playing with twigs, grass, rocks, and berries.
Rather than letting the child play alone, it would be better if the child took the lead and the guardian also participated.
Let's not forget to clean up after playing with our children and teach them to protect nature from a young age.
