The final work of Kwon Jeong-saeng, the greatest children's author of our time.
Like “Dog Poop,” “Sister Mongsil,” and “Mr. Gomi and Mr. Opundori,” Professor Kwon Jeong-saeng has spent his entire life looking into the lives of the poor, the powerless, and the lonely, and writing warm fairy tales about their lives.
In 2008, to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of Professor Kwon Jeong-saeng, his last fairy tale, “Langrangbyeol Ttaettaerong,” was published in book form.
This is a fairy tale that was serialized for over a year in the children's magazine "Gaedongi's Playground" from the first issue in December 2005 to the February 2007 issue.
I don't think it's very important to differentiate between fairy tales and fantasy tales.
This is because all children naturally live between reality and dreams (fantasy).
Not only children but also adults create fantasies while living in reality.
We eat together and dream together.
In summer, I look at the stars in the night sky for a long time.
So, I came up with the story “Lang Lang Star Ttaettaerong”.
- Starting the serialization of Kwon Jeong-saeng's "Gaedongi's Playground"
When Professor Kwon Jeong-saeng finished this series and published it as a book, he sent me a preface with the thread, but he sadly passed away in May 2007.
Those who knew Mr. Kwon Jeong-saeng were anxious as each chapter of the fairy tale was serialized, wondering if he would be able to finish it safely.
Fortunately, the fairy tale was completed safely, but unfortunately, he passed away without seeing it published as a single volume.
He left a final message asking that all royalties be used to help children in North Korea and other poor countries.
If the 20th century was the era of 'Sister Mongsil', the 21st century is the era of 'Rangrangbyeol Ttaettaerong'!
Many people choose Kwon Jeong-saeng's "Sister Mongsil" as the representative work of 20th-century Korean children's literature.
In his recommendation of "Rangrangbyeol Ttaettaerong," children's literature critic Won Jong-chan commented, "Mr. Kwon Jeong-saeng, a representative of 20th-century Korean children's literature, has built a valuable bridge to 21st-century children's literature by writing this work."
Professor Kwon Jeong-saeng's last work, "Rangrangbyeol Ttaettaerong," contains the valuable realization of looking back on one's place while traveling to a mysterious star country.
This is a must-read story for the 21st century we live in.
“Langrangbyeol Ttaettaerong” is a book that contains all of the philosophy that Professor Kwon Jeong-saeng had in mind.
It will become another representative work of Korean children's literature.
A warm fairy tale blending humor and fantasy
In our children's literature, there are few fairy tales that are good for young children to read.
Rather than fairy tales that personify animals or plants, long fantasy fairy tales like “Lang Lang Star Ttaettaerong” that allow our children to freely enjoy their imagination and fantasy are even more precious.
The main characters of "Langrangbyeol Ttaettaerong", Saedali, Madali, Ttaettaerong and Maemarong, are all elementary school students.
These kids secretly compete with each other and even argue, and it's so innocent and funny.
The unique characters and Mr. Kwon Jeong-saeng's signature warm humor make you smile every time you read the book.
It's the same when Madali pretends to fart 523 times to tease Mae-rong, and it's the same when Ttaet-rong shows Sae-dali his diary and they fight over it.
The story that takes place on Lang Lang Star is also very interesting.
The witty old lady is also fun, and it's also fun to see children dressed as goblins flying to the world of Lang Lang Star 500 years ago and playing Hong Gil Dong.
In this way, "Lang Lang Star Ttaettaerong" looks at the world's problems with a serious eye, but it unfolds them in a witty way, as befitting a children's fairy tale.
Also, in “Lang Lang Star Ttaettaerong,” the fantasy world that children love and the real world are naturally blended together.
Although Ttaerong, who lives on Langrangbyeol, and Saedal, who lives on Earth, are far apart, they talk naturally and even exchange letters using paper airplanes.
In particular, the scene where Saedali and Madali leave for Langrangbyeol is the most impressive scene in the work.
Children's literature critic Won Jong-chan said of the scene where the winged white dove, along with Nureongi, fish, dragonflies, bugs, Saedali, and Madali, set off for the fantasy world of Langrangbyeol, "This is an unforgettable scene from our fairy tales."
The right way to live that Professor Kwon Jeong-saeng teaches us
Why did Professor Kwon Jeong-saeng write this fairy tale at the end? We live in an age where the order of life, the order of nature, is being violated in the name of biotechnology.
Until the moment he passed away, Professor Kwon Jeong-saeng criticized this world and pondered how we should live.
He expressed his worries in his last fairy tale, “The Starry Night.”
Langlangbyeol was a world where everything was already achieved through science 500 years ago.
Robots do the farming, cars are computerized, and babies are born in machines.
Children born this way are custom-made humans created with the best genes, so by the age of ten they know everything about the world.
But no one is happy.
So the people of Langlangbyeol return to living a simple life, working with their bodies, without turning on the lights, not having more than three side dishes on the table, and working with their bodies.
By showing the world of Lang Lang Star 500 years ago and 500 years later, teacher Kwon Jeong-saeng criticized the cutting-edge scientific civilization that goes against the order of life and the order of nature, and wanted to show children the image of a simple and warm life lived by working on one's own in nature.
Mr. Kwon Jeong-saeng believed that 'living in poverty' was the only way to escape all the problems of this society and lead a righteous life, and he thoroughly protected this in his life until the moment of his death.
It was a fact that became known after Professor Kwon Jeong-saeng passed away, but he had a lot of wealth as he had written many good books.
Yet, he lived in poverty in a small, shabby shack and died.
Until the very end, he showed us with his whole body that we must live beyond material things and protect ourselves from 'poverty'.
Teacher Kwon Jeong-saeng's last fairy tale!
Today, when we go against the order of nature and life,
A heartwarming fantasy that is a must-read for children and adults alike!
