Prevention and management of complications are important for gout.

Gout is a disease in which uric acid crystals are deposited in the joints, causing severe inflammation.
It commonly causes acute inflammation of the joint at the base of the big toe, resulting in severe pain and swelling.
If left untreated, gout attacks can recur and eventually progress to polyarthritis with gouty tophi, which can destroy joints.
