Description
Book Introduction
A precious step towards communication,
The family newsletter commotion

Since her debut in 2008 when she won the Woongjin Junior Literary Award, author Song Mi-kyung has been attracting the attention of the literary world with every work she publishes. Her children's book for lower elementary school students, "The Family Newsletter Commotion," has been published.
"The School Newsletter Incident" is a delightful story that wittily exposes the absurdity of reality through the school newsletter, the most common message children encounter during their school days.

Instead of having a homecoming letter filled with unwelcome news about competitions, homework, supplies, and events, children create their own letterheads and bring them home with them, listing things they want to do.
Parents initially tilt their heads when they see a school newsletter filled with strange words like, "Go to an amusement park, ride the rides, take pictures and submit them," "Watch an animated movie on your child's behalf and write a review," or "Play computer games with your child for more than three hours."
However, as we go through the things written in the family newsletter with our children, we naturally realize how disconnected we have been with our children and how we have been suppressing their free will.
It allows children to feel happy by revealing their inner selves without reservation, and it allows adults to seriously think about how parents and children should relate and communicate.
"The Family Letter" paradoxically depicts perfect communication through the irony of the differences between the perspectives of children and adults, and will be a valuable step toward communication in an age of disconnection.

Into the book
Any child who has ever been to elementary school knows how boring the school newsletter can start with a greeting.
'It's a fresh season with ripe green leaves. How are you at home? It's none other than... ... .'
The content of the household correspondence is always similar.
There's a sports day, a picnic, an English speaking contest, a test, a flea market, so please send me your unused items.
And it's just made up of very polite, boring words.
So nobody likes household correspondence.
Because the home letter isn't about fun stuff or funny words.
Then one day, Pigeon Elementary School, which had been sending out boring home newsletters every day without fail, suddenly disappeared.
It was after the principal changed to someone else.
--- p.8-9

I'll skip the long greeting that no one will read and get to the important story.
This week, after playing your child's favorite computer game or activity for more than three hours, the person who wins will write a very, very long reflection and submit it.
Don't forget to grant the winner's wish.
Most children's wishes are shocking, but it goes without saying how good these things are for their emotions.
--- p.47

On Saturdays, Mom and Dad played computer games so hard that they didn't have to write each other's reflections.
Not only did they usually not let me play games, but even when they did play games together, they would force me to play because it was boring.
There was a time during spring break when Lee Sang, Mom, and Dad played the game Blue Marble. Mom and Dad wanted to finish the game quickly, so they played it however they wanted.
It was the same when I was arm wrestling.
Even my father would say this while deliberately giving in.
“Oh my, our Lee Sang-i is stronger than me!” “Let’s do it again.
“Dad!” “No, no matter what I do, it’s obvious that this dad will lose.
You're going to win anyway.
So let's stop, Isang-ah.
“You are the eternal winner!” Until now, playing with mom and dad was always boring for Lee Sang-i.
Because both of us find it annoying to play games, we lose quickly on purpose.
But this time it was different.
Since the loser in the game had to write a reflection, Mom and Dad played the game even harder than Lee Sang.
Lee Sang-yi was so taken aback that he felt like he was playing a game with a friend.
--- p.48-50

“Oh, writing a review is really hard.
"Why does the new principal always ask us parents to write reflections, not the kids? Come to think of it, you must have had a hard time! You must have had so many things to write, book reports, observation reports, and all that?" As Lee Sang-i hesitated, not knowing how to respond, his mother waved her arms around and said.
“I guess I shouldn’t write reviews or reports from now on.” Lee Sang-yi smiled, showing his teeth.
Until yesterday, my mom was the one who said that writing a book review was the most important homework.

Publisher's Review
To work hard at things that adults see as useless,
So, I hope you grow up beautifully in your own way!

Author Song Mi-kyung's writing has such a distinct personality that it deserves the adjectives "Song Mi-kyung-style" and "Song Mi-kyung-style."
The way he uses unrealistic events to make us reflect on real reality, the well-organized plot that leads to development, conflict, and resolution even within short texts, the neat message contained within the absurd story, and the solid story structure that does not allow us to find a single carelessly written sentence are all elements that cannot be left out when discussing his work.

This work is no exception.
The author instantly transforms the family newsletter, which contains the one-sided demands of adults, into a medium for satisfying children's desires.
It's a refreshing blow from children to adults.
In particular, the unique virtue of this work is that it boldly eliminates the stereotypical elements of the Harmony Fairy Tale genre, yet still allows readers to think about the message for themselves.

Author Song Mi-kyung, using her own words, says that the useless commotion she had so diligently engaged in as a child made her who she is today.
As the author wishes, I hope that children will work hard at things that adults may see as useless, and grow up to be wonderful in their own way.
Just like the main characters of this story, Lee Sang-i and Seo-jin, who are waiting for their baby teeth to fall out and new teeth to grow in while going through the commotion of a family newsletter.

A unique painting that you've never seen anywhere else,
Adding power to deep stories!

When I read "The Family Newspaper Uproar," I laugh out loud, but then at some point I feel a pang of sadness.
This is because it contains pure words that children want to say, not words that adults want to say.
How unconsciously and routinely did adults force children into a harsh daily routine? How hard must the children have endured that arduous routine? Those who had been unable to communicate properly and only hurt each other began to repair their relationship through family letters.
This story soothes and comforts the weary hearts of children.

Although it is a story with almost no chance of happening in real life, it draws you into the situation more realistically than in real life thanks to the clear theme, the appropriate arrangement of materials closely related to the theme, the fast development, and the author's signature smooth and lively writing style.
Plus, the unique illustrations, never seen before, along with the exciting story, will capture your attention from beginning to end.
The characters' childlike innocence and humor add strength to the profound story.

Come on a fun story journey aboard the yellow submarine!

"The School Newsletter" is the first book in the "Yellow Submarine" series of the Scholastic Elementary Library.
Children work very hard at things that adults may find odd and useless.
It is growing in its own way while causing such big and small disturbances.
I hope that children will grow up causing more trouble and also dealing with it, and that there will be more adults who silently watch and laugh along with the trouble. With this in mind, I have compiled the most adorable and delightful stories of trouble that children in elementary school cause.
Let's go on a fun story journey aboard the yellow submarine!
