Publisher's Review
Until now, research on Goguryeo has not been actively conducted in our country.
This is because there are not many Goguryeo ruins left in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula.
However, since the 2018 Inter-Korean Summit, research on Goguryeo history has gained momentum, with discussions underway between the South and the North on jointly excavating Goguryeo tombs in Pyongyang.
Through exchanges with North Korea, we have laid the foundation for taking a step closer to our history.
『Goguryeo Engraved Stele』 was planned to properly teach children the unfamiliar history of Goguryeo.
The Gwanggaeto Stele, which commemorates the achievements of King Gwanggaeto, who led Goguryeo to become the most powerful nation in East Asia, is personified to tell the story of Goguryeo's 700-year history.
It introduces the achievements of Jumong, who founded Goguryeo, King Sosurim, who promulgated the laws and laid the foundation for the nation, and King Gwanggaeto and King Jangsu, who ruled the largest territory, and provides an easy-to-understand explanation of the political situation in East Asia, including the three kingdoms of Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla, as well as China and Japan.
Also, with dynamic paintings, it vividly conveys the courageous and enterprising spirit of the Goguryeo people, from General Eulji Mundeok, who defeated the Sui army, to General Yang Manchun, who defeated the Tang army and defended Ansi Fortress.
The historical value of the Gwanggaeto Stele, a stone monument inscribed with Goguryeo, is also re-examined.
The Gwanggaeto Stele is of great value as it is one of the few surviving cultural heritage records from the Three Kingdoms period.
However, after the fall of Goguryeo, it was gradually forgotten in our memories, and in the meantime, Japan arbitrarily interpreted the contents of the Gwanggaeto Stele and used it as the basis for its far-fetched claim that Japan had ruled the southern part of the Korean Peninsula in the past.
China also distorted the history of Goguryeo, claiming that Goguryeo was a minority in China.
Kim Il-ok, author of “The Stele Engraved with Goguryeo,” emphasizes that we must not forget that Goguryeo is our precious history.
In a situation where China and Japan are distorting history, the only way to preserve our history is to pay attention to it and remember it correctly.
The book concludes with a clear and concise summary of Goguryeo's history, clearly and logically explaining why Japan and China's claims are distorted, fostering a solid historical awareness.
It also includes various cultural assets of Goguryeo, such as tomb murals, to help you gain a deeper understanding of the Goguryeo people.
Goguryeo, which commanded the Manchurian plains and displayed its vast spirit, is a precious part of our history that no one can deny.
Please teach your children about the proud history of Goguryeo through the “Goguryeo Stele.”
I also hope that it reminds us why we should be interested in our history.
How can we prevent the history that King Gwanggaeto the Great so steadfastly protected from being stolen? The most certain way is to remember our ancestors from long ago and take an interest in our history, which has continued for thousands of years.
If you pay attention to our history and strive to preserve it, no one will be able to shake or distort it.
