November 19, 2024. Baek Jeong-min, PD of Home Life
“All the elementary English study methods I’ve used so far are wrong!
No matter how much you spend on private English education,
The real reason why your child’s English skills are on track!!”

- Why do some children in the same English class speak English well and others do not?
-Siblings with the same parents, why is it that some speak English well and others don't?
- Why do children who clearly had the same English skills in elementary school suddenly have a gap when they enter middle school?

The above case is one that anyone who is serious about teaching their children English has probably experienced firsthand or seen or heard about countless times.
The mindset of parents who search through word of mouth for textbooks and programs that are rumored to be good, and then go out of their way to send their children to expensive English academies.
Although we educate our children with the hopes of parents who say, "Unlike me, I hope you are good at English!", the results are quite different from what you expected.
And with disappointing results, some people end up giving up, thinking, "Does my child not have a talent for English? Does he or she lack language skills?" or they blame themselves, saying, "I think it's my problem...ㅠㅠ I think my child's skills are stagnant because I lack information compared to other mothers or I'm not guiding him or her properly."

But, folks! This situation is absolutely not a problem caused by your child or your own shortcomings.
Rather, it is because they did not know their child's English learning tendencies, and they did not even know that their English study method should be different depending on their child's tendencies, and they relied on a uniform method.
Moreover, the learning methods for the '6 English areas' are different for each, and it is simply a 'situation that can be improved' that occurred because we only taught as others did, such as not being able to distinguish what should be focused on and what should not be focused on depending on the period (grade).
What this means is that anyone can improve as long as they know how and put it into practice.

This book is a practical guide and practical answer to the concerns I have seen and heard in the competitive English education field for a long time.

There were many times when I felt sorry while teaching countless elementary, middle, and high school children and meeting their parents.
English education should be about understanding your child's personality and developing a big picture, then simply implementing step-by-step learning appropriate for each stage. However, I often feel like you're feeling lost amidst the overwhelming amount of information.
So, this book was published, which contains a comprehensive summary of the six most realistic and effective English language learning methods, reflects the latest educational trends (changes), and analyzes six types of English learning tendencies in children.

These days, we have access to more educational information than ever before, thanks to various educational books, videos, and educational information on social media platforms.
But in reality, there are not many people who apply the knowledge they have learned in this way to their children's learning.
Because it is more difficult to put into practice than you think, and when you actually try to do it, it often doesn't fit the child's situation.
However, learning English during elementary school requires a lot of help from parents.
The motto of my YouTube channel, “Intersection Studio,” is “A practical educational channel for parents in Korea,” so I wrote this book to help you “put it into practice.”

This book is not a passive parenting book.
This is a practical book that not only accumulates systematic educational information while reading, but also allows you to directly test your child's English learning aptitude, follow study methods for each area, apply a list of recommended books and textbooks, conduct vocabulary tests, and even get advice on resolving concerns.
Additionally, the part I paid the most attention to was creating a map called “English Learning Success Roadmap by Period (Grade)” that would allow children from preschool to middle school to see their English learning process at a glance.
We highly recommend that you post this map on a prominent wall in relation to your child's learning, and use it as a guide to review during transitions, educational choices, and decision-making.

Additionally, this book contains the most effective and realistic learning methods for each of the six major areas of English (listening, reading, vocabulary, grammar, writing, and speaking).
In addition, it contains practical solutions that reflect the realistic difficulties and frequently asked questions in each field, so we hope you prepare in advance to ensure your child can move forward without major difficulties when studying in the relevant field.

By the end of this book, you'll have developed the ability to discern the direction and information your child needs for English learning amidst the flood of educational information. Furthermore, you'll develop the capacity to guide and support your child's academic growth.
If any of the following applies to you, you must read this book.
I am sure you will never regret it.

Into the book
The absolute formula for English success that I want to share with you through this book is:
"My child" is different from the kid next door! What if my child prefers nonfiction English books over fiction? If my child, who loves nonfiction about animals, history, and scientific principles, is only fed "story English books" that others like, will he or she ever truly love English?

What if my child experiences particularly high stress in group English classes? If you discover your child dislikes English classes not because of the English language itself, but because of their personality, which is incredibly stressed by the group learning environment, would you still send them to that academy? What if your child prefers intensive reading to extensive reading?

My child, who I thought was a slow reader, turned out to be a gifted reader who meticulously reads any text! Did you, unaware of this, perhaps criticize him for being slow? If so, would he or she truly enjoy reading English books in such an environment? _From "The Ideal Dream of a Nervous Parent and Child"
---From "The Illusion of Teaching English Well"

In English learning, English vocabulary is the foundation and core of all areas.
Because without English vocabulary, no area of study, including listening, speaking, reading, or writing, can be accomplished properly.
It's like building a house without a solid foundation, no matter how good the materials and techniques used. Especially in an EFL (English as a Foreign Language) environment like Korea, where daily exposure to English is extremely limited, the importance of systematic English vocabulary learning is even more evident.
For this reason, it's important to remember that learning English vocabulary is both the starting point of your English studies and a key element that must be maintained on an ongoing basis.

Everyone recognizes the importance of learning English vocabulary, but in reality, there are many children who are unable to learn English vocabulary effectively.
Moreover, many children face a significant barrier to learning English when they move from elementary school to middle school.
This is mostly because abstract vocabulary suddenly increases and classes shift to a text-centric approach.
Even if you somehow manage to get through middle school, many people give up learning English vocabulary altogether when they reach high school because they are overwhelmed by the amount of words they have to memorize.
But the big problem with learning English vocabulary is that failure doesn't stop at simply not knowing the words.
A lack of vocabulary directly leads to a decline in reading comprehension skills, which ultimately becomes a major obstacle to improving overall English skills.
---From "Learning English Vocabulary is Important, but Why Most People Fail"

The upper elementary school years are the time to begin preparing for middle school English by building on basic English skills and pursuing more in-depth studies.
Effective English learning strategies for this period include:

First, this period is the ‘non-literature reading adaptation period.’
It is important to have students read high-quality texts, such as non-fiction books, articles, or American textbooks (social studies, science, etc.).
However, there are some things to be careful about when choosing reading text.
Forcing a child to learn something they don't understand can actually be detrimental.
It's a good idea to choose texts that are appropriate for your child's level and sometimes a little challenging.

Second, it is a time when we must focus on developing English literacy.
It is important to utilize reading materials and build background knowledge through various reading materials and media.
This will not only help you improve your English skills, but also your overall learning ability.
---From "English Learning Success Roadmap by Period (Grade) - Upper Elementary School (Grades 5-6)"

Most books that children like are 1) series that they liked while listening to them or focusing on them, 2) another book by an author they liked, 3) books that feature characters that the child likes (you can get hints from Korean books!), 4) stories that are similar to the child's current situation (school life, daily life of characters of the same age), and lastly, 5) books that many children like in common.
If your child doesn't seem to have a strong preference, try approaching books that meet the criteria described above: series that many children like, series with characters they like, or series with relatable stories similar to current situations.
A good place to start is with one of our most popular and representative leader series, which we recommend below.

Publisher's Review
Why Every Elementary School Parent Should Read This Book

From preschool to elementary school, the subject that parents consider most important and pay the most attention to is undoubtedly 'English'.
English has many good books and programs, and there are various private education options, from language schools to cram schools for entrance exams. Moms' tips for teaching English are widely known, but it is also the subject that requires the most information and consideration when making the right educational choice for your child.
To put it simply, there are many good things, but it is difficult to be certain about each choice, such as whether it is truly good for our child, whether the learning is truly suitable for our child, and whether the child's skills will actually improve if we just do it.
So, every elementary school parent needs a guide and practice book for a proper 'English learning roadmap.'
A guide to help you stay centered and make the right choices.

Why do children learn and experience the same things differently? This book focuses on why success and failure vary among children, even when using proven English study methods.
This book explains the obvious truth (but no one pays attention to) that no matter how good a method is, it must be an approach that suits each child's different tendencies to be effective, using practical examples.
So, it is structured in steps so that you can first understand your child's personality and then apply the right English learning method and order.
