A book recommended by Lee Seon-jae, Korea's leading Korean language instructor!
Are you able to confidently express your opinion?
13 controversies that have recently heated up our society
Everything about youth debate: speaking, presenting, and asking questions without hesitation!
In an era of rapidly advancing AI technology, the creative and logical thinking abilities unique to humans, which machines cannot replace, are becoming increasingly important.
Young people who have practiced the process of establishing and arguing their own arguments will also have a different perspective on social issues.
Through discussion, students can cultivate creativity, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills, which are the capabilities of future talent, and participate in solving social issues through dialogue and compromise.
We will debate 13 issues that have recently heated up our society, including the Student Human Rights Ordinance, the National Coalition for the Elimination of Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities subway protests, the No Kids Zone, and the Black Little Mermaid.
As you discuss with the characters in this book, Seoyeon, Junhyeok, Hana, and Garam, you will want to express your thoughts.
An excellent guide to help young people develop their thinking skills through reading and discussion.

Into the book
If you can think for yourself, you can take charge of your life.
When a crisis comes, we ask ourselves how we can overcome it and find ways to overcome it.
Debate is a training center that strengthens the muscles of thinking and disciplines the mind.
--- pp.8-9
If you only speak your own words in a debate and do not listen attentively to what your opponents say, you will not be able to say anything during the cross-examination and rebuttal.
Listening while focusing on the other person's logic is called critical listening.
So, just being good at speaking doesn't mean you can be good at debating.
Critical listening must be done in a three-dimensional manner.
--- p.35
Teacher Hong: In our debate club, we'll choose a topic that's currently a hot topic in society and practice expressing our thoughts with logical arguments and supporting evidence.
I'm really looking forward to debating with you all!
--- p.39
Junhyeok: The decline of teachers' authority and the student human rights ordinance are separate issues.
It is true that teachers' authority has declined, but the cause is not solely the Student Human Rights Ordinance.
So, will abolishing the Student Human Rights Ordinance restore teachers' authority? I think the Child Abuse Act is the real problem.
Because the Child Abuse Act is applied too broadly, the abuse of power by some parents is becoming a problem.
--- p.42
Seoyeon: I don't think we, who have never used a wheelchair before, can fully empathize with its difficulties and inconveniences.
Even if the method is wrong, I think that protesting on the subway during rush hour can be a legitimate choice to guarantee the right to mobility for people with disabilities.
--- p.96
Garam: The Little Mermaid's race isn't a problem within the overall storyline, so why is it such a global issue? The fact that the casting of a black actress sparked controversy stems from the still-strong prejudice that princesses must be white.
Many criticize Disney's pursuit of "political correctness," but if they didn't, we'd still have white princesses.
--- pp.136-137
Have you ever been afraid to speak up for fear of alienating a friend? Have you ever argued with a friend after a discussion? Not everyone can agree on the same opinion.
To maintain a good relationship with others and clearly express my opposing views, I need to learn how to disagree in the right way.
You should not oppose your opponent's logic or oppose for the sake of opposing in order to win unconditionally.
Because the purpose of debate is to find a better solution.
--- p.150
Friends who have put in a lot of preparation and effort into debating, whether it's in class or at a debate competition, say that it feels like the world around them has expanded.
Because I feel firsthand that the world is a collection of countless people with different opinions than mine.
This is also why you need to learn how to debate properly, even if you don't necessarily participate in debate competitions.
--- pp.150-151
There are a variety of students in the classroom.
There is no one student who is the same in terms of academic level, personality, hobbies, and strengths.
It is only natural that students from different backgrounds will have different opinions.
I want to create a classroom where people can ask friends, teachers, and adults who have different opinions about why they think that way without feeling embarrassed.
I hope we can become friends who courageously ask questions and listen earnestly together.
--- p.155
Decide on a pro or con position and research the evidence to support it.
Write and present your own argument and listen to the other person's argument.
In the process of questioning and refuting, true thinking and communication skills are developed.
You will experience tremendous growth just by reading one book.
