Why do you work?
Description
Book Introduction
“Why am I working myself to death?” Go beyond just earning a living and redefine the purpose and direction of your work. A must-read for anyone who is overwhelmed by work. People work and live. Whether it's work, housework, business, or part-time job, I spend each day working hard at something. But if you don't know why you work and what you work for, you will end up living each day reluctantly, overwhelmed by the work that comes your way. I'm tired and exhausted, but I'm in despair because I don't know how to get out of this hamster wheel. The author, Pastor Jo Jeong-min, worked as a journalist for 25 years. He lived a more intense and busier life than anyone else. Going to work at dawn and coming home at dawn continued for 25 years. Then I met Jesus and was faced with the question, 'Why are you working yourself to death?' Through this book, he says that we must examine why we work, whether we are working properly, whether we are doing the work God has given us, and whether that work is saving people. Drawing on his extensive work experience and the wisdom gleaned from the Bible, he explores how Christians can achieve a balance between work and spirituality. It presents essential information such as the purpose of work, work and rest, and work and human relationships. Additionally, the 'Group Discussion' questions included at the end of each lesson allow small groups to share their thoughts on work and spirituality. |

Q&A: Small Questions About Work and Spirituality
Into the book
Our lives are too short to do anything that really matters.
If you're not careful, you might end up living your whole life without even knowing what's important.
The reason you have to do important things first is because you never know when you might be gone.
Life seems long, but it goes by so quickly.
Moreover, they do not leave in the same order as they arrived.
I don't know who will leave first.
Everyone must live prepared to leave.
The most beautiful preparation is to live by doing the most important things first.
First of all, believe in Jesus.
Receive the Holy Spirit.
Meet God as your Father.
Then you will do what needs to be done first.
The conflict of distinguishing between important and trivial matters disappears.
Forgive first, love first, and reconcile first.
Those who do not do this first will invariably regret it when they close their eyes.
--- p.44-45
How did Jesus find rest amidst all his labors? He found rest between tasks through prayer.
Through prayer, we create a cycle of work and rest.
Prayer to Jesus is rest and peace.
For Jesus, prayer is like a counterweight that balances work and rest.
Between miracles there is special prayer, between work there is daily prayer, between work and rest there is habitual prayer.
--- p.75
David's leadership is unique.
He always does things from God's perspective.
It was David-like to save the Egyptian youth, but it was also David-like to divide the spoils equally.
When deciding an event, he looked at it from God's perspective, not from a human perspective.
Because God is at the center of it.
This is spirituality.
--- p.
89
Joseph's spirituality was not formed in the temple or the monastery.
It is created in the painful workplace and in everyday life.
Everyday life is the environment God has given us to become spiritual people.
Is it hard to agree? When I don't understand or agree, God is always right.
God gives us the best.
When we face reality, accept it, and immerse ourselves in life in our given circumstances, God begins to work in ways we cannot imagine.
--- p.120
If you look closely, conflicts are not actually caused by work.
Your inner attitude is reflected on your outer appearance.
Work is just an excuse.
So, it's a hasty conclusion to blame your colleagues at work.
The conflicts that come with work cannot be discussed so simply.
Jesus pointed it out.
He is telling us that Martha's busyness was not due to Mary, but rather came from her own inner turmoil.
In other words, you told me that it was a problem with my internal energy.
--- p.163
Only when we realize that work without love is useless do we begin to understand the true purpose of work.
Whatever you do, your purpose must be love.
People grow through work, but they cannot mature without love.
Paul knew that those who work without love cannot rise above the level of children.
