Book Introduction
One of my dreams is to introduce Jonathan Edwards to the Korean church in a professional, systematic, and comprehensive manner.
Because I believe that Jonathan Edwards is the person in church history who most perfectly balanced biblical knowledge and experience of the Holy Spirit, theological theory and practical life, cool intellect and warm emotions.
I also believe that Jonathan Edwards' writings are the best remedy for the flimsy faith and distorted experiences of our time, and they are the most reliable food for our souls and spiritual health food for a healthy and mature Korean church of tomorrow.
Second, if you listen to the various evaluations of Jonathan Edwards, you will see that my words are not an exaggeration.
Samuel Davis considers Edwards "the most profound thinker and the greatest theologian that has ever been produced," and Perry Miller says, "Puritanism is the essence of Protestantism, and Jonathan Edwards is the essence of Puritanism."
Even Lloyd Jones praises him, saying, "If the Puritans are like the Alps, and Luther and Calvin are like the Himalayas, Jonathan Edwards is like Mount Everest."
Truly, Jonathan Edwards, a man of many faces—theologian, pastor, revivalist, preacher, missionary, philosopher, ethicist, psychologist, sociologist, and historian—was a man like the Himalayas, with 14 peaks over 8,000 meters, who left behind outstanding achievements and insights in all of these fields.
Third, if anyone asks, "How can I become a good pastor and a good believer?" I'd like to share a conversation I once had between Lloyd-Jones, the greatest evangelical preacher of the 20th century, and a seminary student.
"What should I do to prepare to become a pastor in the future?" "Read Jonathan Edwards." "What should I do next?" "Read Jonathan Edwards." "So what should I do next?" "Read Jonathan Edwards."
- From the preface by Pastor Baek Geum-san
