Playing God's Mission
Playing God's Mission
Description
Book Introduction
The ordinary lives of Christians resonate together
God's extraordinary missionary symphony!

“We are the orchestra, and God is the composer.
We are invited to play His glorious music together.”
Christopher Wright (Wrangham Partnership International, author of God's Mission)

Every person has a unique mission that God has called him to from every corner of the world.
The mission is like a musician being in charge of an instrument that composes a symphony.
The symphony of God's mission is played in harmony with the activities of people who each carry out their mission.
Readers living their daily lives in the myriad realms of creation will find in this book a challenge to participate in God's mission and gain the wisdom to live their lives in response to that challenge.
A well-balanced guide that blends scholarship and practice to help you understand that God's mission truly encompasses the entire world.

Into the book
Until then, I had not understood the history of 20th-century theology, in which words and practices were so sharply separated.
But I realized that there was something wrong with a church that prioritized evangelism so much while remaining almost insensitive to justice and mercy.
My missionary work was being challenged and expanded.
--- From the "Preface"

The story of God's mission recorded in the Bible is precisely this good news, God's plan to return the entire world and all human life to its original shalom and blessing.
We are called to participate in this mission.
So let's listen to this symphony carefully.
As the song progresses and our time comes, we will be able to pick up our instruments and play our parts.
--- From "Story"

Many people want to do great things for God and see God's smile while playing the song of missions.
But many of us waver between passion and apathy.
Because the basics are neglected.
We don't want to invest time in learning the fundamentals of missions, the specific notes and rhythms that form the basis of music.
--- From "Simplicity"

The Church has three broad movements of witness, which combine to tell the story of renewing the world.
We would like to call these three the stewardship, service, and ministry of the Word.
These three movements are the three main ways God has given us to participate in His mission.
--- From "Intentionality"

We may not always know how to understand the good and beauty we encounter in the world.
Many of us struggle to understand the meaning behind the good things we see.
Deep within us, we tell ourselves that there is inherent goodness in a well-organized business plan, a bountiful garden, compassionate nursing, and wise parenting.
But how does such goodness fit with God's mission? Joe struggled with this question for years before meeting me.
He wondered what good there was to be gained from devoting so much time to basketball.
--- From "The Office of Stewardship"

Before I read that part of Les Misérables, I used to imagine catching a thief and hitting him in the face with the blunt end of a shovel.
But soon I deeply regretted my sins.
Knowing that my heart was not right, I had to explore what it meant to forgive and love my enemies.
So we started praying for them.
My wife wisely suggested that we make a sign expressing our forgiveness to those who had robbed our home.
--- From "Serving"

Our response to the powers that oppose Christ's Lordship of the world is not to hide in caves or adapt to their alternative narratives, but to actively resist by bearing witness—a witness that is infused with the Holy Spirit, bearing the image of the cross, and resembling the Lamb.
It is the kind of testimony that led to John's exile and Antipas' martyrdom (Rev. 2:13).
This is the testimony that led Martin Luther King to confront the evils of racism and injustice with nonviolent resistance, ultimately costing him his life.
--- From "Mission as Testimony"

God's people are still called to reveal the uniqueness of our God through the way we live, work, and worship.
But after the Holy Spirit came, we were empowered through Christ's ministry to invite people into our family, and this required words.
The book of Acts is the story of God's people, empowered by the Holy Spirit, proclaiming the gospel by word of mouth, beginning in Jerusalem and extending to the ends of the earth.
--- From "Sharing the Word"

We are invited into God's majestic symphony, called to stewardship, service, and the singing of His Word, but it can be difficult to figure out where God wants us to focus our time, talents, and treasures.
Strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion? With so many instruments, which one should I choose? The world is full of problems, which one should I tackle first? We must discover what instruments God created us to play and what sounds He has called us to play.
--- From "Listening"

We love God, understand His mission, and long for Him to be glorified in everyone, everywhere, and in all life.
We engage in various aspects of missions, from volunteering to donating to helping neighbors in need.… In this chapter, we will discuss how to identify specific areas of missions you should focus on and how to play the song of stewardship, service, and sharing the Word in those specific situations.
--- From "Playing"

How can we cultivate patience? How can we think about missions biblically and long-term, rather than chasing short-term trends? How can we sustain our mission engagement with intention and love, not just for days, weeks, or months, but for years, even decades?
--- From "Continuing"

Publisher's Review
All Christians are called to be servants of God.

Missions goes beyond simply delivering the gospel message; it is about participating in God's work.
God's work extends beyond a specific mission field and extends throughout the entire world He created.
Many Christians would agree with this statement, but they may not have thought specifically about what that ministry consists of and how it applies to their own daily lives.
While some people faithfully carry out God's work every day without even realizing it, many Christians are confused because they cannot connect God's work with their daily lives.

Jim Mullins, a practicing Christian, had similar concerns.
“What is God’s mission?” “What is my role in God’s mission?” “What does mission look like in everyday life?” He had been pondering these questions since becoming a Christian disciple, and through meeting missionary Michael Goheen, he learned a comprehensive perspective on mission.
Even Goh Hein, a scholar who had spent his life studying holistic missions, needed a place to put his understanding of missions into practice.
Because God's mission ultimately takes place in specific places of life.
Their many years of companionship have been a journey of putting theology into practice.
That is how “Playing God’s Mission” was born.

Bridging the gap between scholarship and practice, between the sacred and the profane

The book explains in detail the story of God's mission as revealed in the Bible, the basic attitudes we must have as believers called to missions, how to participate in missions, and how to discover and practice our calling in our daily lives.
With a solid biblical foundation that summarizes God's work as a single story of creation, fall, salvation, and completion, examples from the authors' own experiences in real life, and a guide to help each Christian discover themselves and move toward concrete practice, the two authors demonstrate their efforts to bridge the gap between scholarship and practice in one book, helping Christians discover their calling in life.

The authors challenge the tendency to distinguish between sacred and secular work.
Many Christians, while faithfully carrying out their work in the world, believe that there is a separate holy act.
In the authors' view, all legitimate work reveals the diversity of God's creation, and what is important is not what is done, but the meaning contained in the work and the manner in which it is performed.
Creativity is expressed through painting and cooking, creation is restored through cleaning and education, and life is brought into harmony through landscaping and architecture. Countless everyday tasks express God's creation or contribute to the world's shalom.
The important thing is that we show our Christian character by doing those things well (1 Peter 2:12).

The authors' focus on the story of the restoration of the created world naturally leads us to focus on social justice as well.
Poverty, violence, environmental destruction, excessive competition, and class, religious, and racial conflicts are destroying God's creation.
The authors remind us that these issues are not peripheral to the gospel, but are at the heart of God's mission of reconciliation and restoration.
The Graze baseball team, which pursues coexistence rather than competition, the With community that works with the homeless, the Neighborly Love rally that called for peace in the face of gun-wielding protesters, and the experience of suppressing anger, understanding the desperate situation of a thief, and welcoming him—all of these examples show how God's mission is manifested in practice.

God's missionary symphony, played by ordinary people

The book uses the symphony as its central metaphor.
In an orchestra, musicians listen to the sounds of surrounding instruments while understanding the intentions of the composer and conductor.
In the meantime, each performance blends together to create a beautiful harmony.
There are instruments that get noticed, but there are no unimportant instruments.
The same goes for the Christian life.
Just as we listen to music and understand the composer's heart, we immerse ourselves in the Bible stories and understand God's intentions for the world.
Just as a musician learns the fundamentals of harmony and how to play an instrument, Christians acquire and practice the basic qualities of togetherness, living in community, and loving.
Every Christian who lives like that takes his or her place as a servant of God.

In that sense, this book is a textbook that teaches Christians how to play and what instrument they should use when God, as the composer and conductor, leads His mission.
For Christians, it is important to have the basics of faith and find a place where they should stay.
Through this book, which balances scholarship and practice, ordinary Christians living ordinary lives will be able to confirm that they are performers in God's extraordinary missionary symphony, and gain the wisdom to form communities in their own places and perform well with their neighbors.
