Book Introduction
A word from MD
[Exhibition Stories from a Space Designer] A book by Yongju Kim, the first Korean public exhibition designer and exhibition designer at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art.
You can see the creative process and the contemplation that goes into creating an exhibition with a single story, and unraveling the hidden themes within the artist and his work.
The story of the exhibition, which I have personally participated in and organized for 15 years, conveys a vivid sense of presence.
- Ahn Hyun-jae, art producer
Consideration, communication, and an attitude of approaching others' lives with sincerity are the starting points of 'exhibition design.'

A book filled with the exhibition design ideas, experiences, and methods for overcoming difficulties of Kim Yong-ju, the exhibition planning director at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, who opened new horizons for exhibition design in Korea.
Knowing exhibition design makes appreciating art more enjoyable.

The era of exhibition design has arrived.
The audience cheers not only for the artwork but also for the exhibition design.
Korea's exhibition design is world-class.
Understanding exhibition design also enhances your artistic vision.
However, there are few books that introduce exhibition design based on experience.
As the first exhibition designer to be hired by a public company in Korea, the author has pioneered his own path by accepting limitations as challenges.
This book elevates the level of appreciation for art and stimulates the imagination of both designers and readers.

This book is not a theoretical book.
It was written based on exhibitions that I have directly participated in and conducted over the past 15 years.
By following the diverse senses and thoughts that unfold in the process of creating a contemporary art exhibition, the process of overcoming difficulties, and the exhibition designer's hidden concerns and creative process, you will gain a glimpse into another world of art.

An exhibition is a product of complex relationships that are completed only when the relationships between the artworks in the space, the atmosphere of the exhibition hall, the relationships between the artworks, and the diverse experiences and cognitive systems of the viewers appreciating the artworks intersect.
In the process of creating an exhibition, the exhibition designer seriously approaches the artist's life to unravel the theme.
Relationships that start like this lead to a series of problem-solving.

Additionally, this book shows the process of solving practical problems encountered in order to successfully open an exhibition through new ideas.
For example, the problem faced during the Lee Jung-seop exhibition was solved like this.

“Most of Lee Jung-seop’s silver-colored paintings are no larger than 16 cm in size.
If this small silver leaf painting were to be enlarged 100 times and projected 16 meters away, 100 years later, his delicate expressions would fill the entire wall.
“The glittering properties of silver paper, the lines imbued with paint, and his unique technique will be reincarnated into a large mural.”

Exhibition designers are people who find the best solutions within given constraints.
This book tells the story of how exhibition designers understand the artist's thoughts and lives, how they transform their thinking and find new methods to break through the various limitations they face in reality, and how they move forward.

This book will provide a concrete understanding of the field of exhibition design, and even outside the field, it will stimulate the imagination by transforming limitations into stepping stones for advancement.
