Into the book
“The mystery novel writing club, as the name suggests, aims to write mystery novels.
By the end of the first semester, submit one mystery novel of approximately 100 pages.
To do that, we need to first understand what a mystery novel is. Let's learn about mystery novels and writing during our Wednesday club sessions.
The teacher won't just give you mystery novels.
“I plan to collect the works you’ve written, publish them, and even list them on online bookstores for sale.”
I quickly typed the teacher's words into the laptop I always carried with me.
Gian, who had just become the president, sat up straight and listened to the teacher.
During the self-introduction time we had earlier, Ji-an said that she is a mystery novel fanatic.
Gian and I were in the same class in the second grade, and now that we are in the third grade.
Ji-an read books whenever she had time in class, but it seems that all of them were mystery novels.

Crime scene.
fire.
criminal.
And Grandma Youngja.
The moment I heard the name I had forgotten for a while, my heart ached, but small sparks flew in my head.
I left the kids in the playground and walked toward the school building.
As I walked, the surrounding temperature seemed to drop.
It wasn't my first time seeing a fire scene.
When the village was in chaos due to the fire at Jinsong Elementary School, my grandfather took me in secretly, saying he would show me around (he easily ignored the no-trespassing tape).
The fire first started in the recycling bin behind the school building.
The fire spread to a car in the parking lot and then to the first floor of the school building.
The car was gone, but the ashes of the recycling center and the blackened school building remained.
The culprit has been caught, Grandma Youngja!

“This is Yoon Si-woo, a 4th grader, and he goes to the same math academy as us.
I met my sisters the day before yesterday and we went straight to math academy.
During a short break, we were talking about the courage test we had back then, and he suddenly interrupted.
so……."
Haeyoung sighed.
“Hey, Jammins.
What's the point?
Everyone's eyes were focused on Siwoo.
Siwoo's eyes shook anxiously, but he soon spoke as if he had made up his mind.
“Grandma Youngja didn’t start the fire.
“No, really!”
Haeyoung snorted.
“How do you know?”
“My grandmother was sleeping with me when the fire broke out.”
“Why is that old lady sleeping with you?”
I grabbed Haeyoung's arm.
“Sim Hae-young, this is Grandma Young-ja’s grandson.”

“This is the floral blouse and purple pants that Grandma Youngja always wore in the summer.
“Where did you buy those clothes?”
“What kind of clothes would an old woman who wears the same clothes until they’re worn out buy? Even if she did buy them, it would probably be at a market.”
“Where is that market?”
“There’s a market in town every Friday, right?
There's no other place that sells clothes.
But what keeps acting weird? Why does it keep doing that?”
“I think… the person who set fire to Jinsong Elementary School wasn’t Grandma Youngja.”
Grandfather was silent for a while.
As I was about to say goodbye and hang up, I heard my grandfather's voice again.
“If you don’t think so, keep looking.
“Even if the day of death is near, you must not leave any regrets behind.”
This time I kept my mouth shut.
My heart ached as I thought of Grandma Youngja and Siwoo's faces.
“Yes, Grandpa.
“I will see it through to the end.”

As the teacher said, completing a novel was not easy.
Besides, I had to use my left hand to type on the keyboard intermittently because I injured my right arm.
When Haeyoung came to my house to play, I would call out a sentence and Haeyoung would type it on the keyboard for me.
My mystery novel dealt with the Jinsong Elementary School fire incident as I had originally envisioned.
The names of real people, place names, and school names were changed, and the author meticulously wrote about the real culprit's motive and method for setting the fire, as well as how he framed Grandma Youngja.
The beginning was difficult, but the middle part was better than the beginning, and when I wrote the last sentence, I cried because of an inexplicable emotion.
Following Professor Park Soo-ah's advice, I revised and revised my writing again.
I was so proud when I discovered that my writing skills were improving the more I wrote.
If you think about it, most things you encounter in life will get better the more you do them.
The thing that gave me the greatest strength throughout writing the novel was my belief in myself.
I have accomplished more difficult tasks, so I believe I can finish writing this novel.
As Professor Park Soo-ah said, I had a heart that didn't give up easily.
