A story about school violence written by a lawyer specializing in school violence.

Since the revision of the School Violence Prevention Act in early 2020, when the School Violence Countermeasures Deliberation Committee at the Office of Education level, rather than the school itself, took charge of school violence issues, the author has worked as a school violence attorney at two offices of education for several years, vividly experiencing the reality of school violence in the field.
I have investigated over 500 school violence cases, directly participated in over 200 school violence countermeasures committee deliberations, and handled over 50 disciplinary hearings and 10 administrative lawsuits.
Sometimes, I visited schools in person to hear firsthand about their struggles with school violence and provide legal advice.


This book came from that experience.
As a lawyer specializing in school violence, the author shares his experiences, lessons, and concerns from the field, sharing his insights into the reality of school violence and the clues to its resolution.

School violence hidden behind the excuse that it was just a joke
But there is never a good joke

Is all school violence perpetrated by perpetrators who seem like the embodiment of evil? Is it truly that unforgivable, vicious school violence dominates schools and terrorizes students? If we severely punish perpetrators, who are like heinous criminals, simply by banishing them from school and society, will schools become peaceful and safe?

The reality of school violence in the educational field that the author experienced was not like that.
School violence is mostly a conflict and fight between ordinary children, a discord that arises in the process of forming relationships, and behaviors that occur among peers as pranks, games, and culture without them knowing what is wrong.

Everyone knows that if I hit someone or persistently harass them, it is school violence.
But I don't know why my joking, habitual swearing, calling others by nicknames, and gossiping about others are considered school violence.
I just had a little fight with my friend, I just teased him a little, I just had physical contact while dating him, I just played a popular game, I just did it out of curiosity, I just helped my friend, he was the one who did it first, I just followed tradition and culture, but I don't know why it's considered school violence.
Because we don't know and understand why school violence occurs, there is no change.

This book, rather than using rigid legal terminology, uses vivid, real-life examples to explain how everyday actions, unintentional actions, actions resulting from conflicts with friends, and minor fights with others experienced while growing up can harm others and why they constitute school violence.

Rather than providing legal explanations of what school violence is, what types it is, what the procedures are, and what measures are taken against the offending student, the focus was on empathizing with the victim's perspective: what would I do if I were in that situation, how would I feel if I were in that situation, what would I do if I were the other child's guardian, etc.


I hope that through this book, our students and their guardians will have the opportunity to examine and consider the meaning of their own and our children's behavior from the perspective of others, rather than viewing their own behavior from their own perspective.
I hope that our students will live within the confines of school with consideration and respect for others.
I hope you will wisely and intelligently deal with various conflict situations with your friends, and think about the values ​​and methods of peaceful coexistence with others.
