Publisher's Review
“It took 13 years in Manseok-dong to write ‘The Children of the Magpie’,
It took 13 years in Gangwha to write "Everyone is a Gam-eon." - Kim Jung-mi

A warm and spirited coming-of-age novel by Kim Jung-mi has arrived!

Yujeong, who lives on Ganghwa Island, is a middle school girl with deep inner wounds.
Although he is teased at school for being deaf and having a stutter, he lives bravely, helping with farm work and taking care of his nephews and nieces.
If you get to know him, you will see that he has a warm heart that cannot ignore injured animals.
By Yujeong's side are her uncle who cherishes her instead of her parents, her aunt who came from Vietnam, her grandmother who is blunt but secretly affectionate, and her friends who are as close as her family.
Even though they bicker constantly, Gwangsoo takes care of Yoojung more than anyone else; Woojoo, who transferred from Seoul and feels far away but is always on Yoojung's mind; and Jihee, who cries a lot and always asks Yoojung for advice, but quickly shakes it off and gets back on track.
"Everyone's Gone" is the story of a year they spend together.

The work is composed of daily life as seen through Yujeong's eyes.
Although there is an overall warm sentiment, the reality of rural life is not always beautiful.
My uncle, who is trying to maintain eco-friendly agriculture, is suffering from the situation in which it is becoming increasingly difficult to make a living as a small farmer, as the Korea-China FTA is approaching following the Korea-US FTA.
Gwangsu's father, who ran a small ranch, is also going through difficult times after culling his cattle twice due to foot-and-mouth disease.
This sense of defeatism among adults is passed on to their children.
When the teacher at school suggested that the children envision a future where they would take over the family business and become farmers or laborers, all the children were shocked.

“My father told me not to farm.”
"that's right.
“My parents say that farming is over now.”
“If you go to a factory, you won’t be able to make much money and you’ll be tied down.”
“Why do we go to the factory? Why do you ignore us?”
“Don’t think that because we live in the countryside, we’re doomed to fail in life.” —Page 89

“Living together, eating together, working together.
“You can live like that.”

The reality of rural areas where hope is hard to find.
What message does the author want to convey to those trying to navigate this? Even in challenging situations, the characters in Kim Jung-mi's novels all act with strength and trustworthiness.
Yujeong does not ignore the injured stray cat, but takes it to the animal hospital and does her best to save the puppy that was born weak.
Gwangsu, who had been wandering around thinking that farming was hopeless, eventually decides to take over his father's business and chooses to enroll in the livestock department of an agricultural high school.
The little mother from Vietnam also tells Yu-jeong a lesson she learned in Vietnam, saying that there are things that are more important than money.
The author seems to be saying that the key to solving problems lies in living together with family, friends, and neighbors.

“For us Vietnamese people, Cung Eo, Cung An, Cung Tam are important.
“Before our father passed away, he always told us:
“Kung-eo, Kung-an, Kung-tam? What does that mean?”
“It means living together, eating together, and working together.
Brother, live like that.
I like it when my brother works at the farmers' association and is kind to the village elders.
I don't need any money.
It's okay if Yongmin isn't very good at studying.
“Just live like your brother.” - Page 194

The innocent love and delightful growth of rural girl Yujeong!

If Kim Jung-mi's previous novels have felt somewhat heavy due to their serious themes, this novel, "All Dark," presents a fresh approach, conveying a cheerful and lively atmosphere while dealing with profound themes.
In particular, the realistic characters and vivid descriptions, such as Gwangsoo's honest and straightforward 'straightforward' love offensive towards Yoojung, and Yoojung's grandmother's salty speech that often bickers with her son and daughter-in-law, draw readers into the work and sometimes even make them burst into laughter.
Following 『The Children of the Gwangi-beokrimal』, which dealt with teenagers growing up in the slums, 『Everyone is Dark』 will once again establish itself as a masterpiece by author Kim Jung-mi.

People living in cities today only encounter rural areas through television entertainment programs.
The rural areas we encounter in this way are likely to be portrayed superficially or filled with misunderstandings.
Author Kim Jung-mi wrote “All Dark” after living in Ganghwa for over ten years.
As the author knows the realities of rural areas better than anyone else, every sentence is imbued with a sense of reality.
Through this work, we will not only gain a deeper understanding of rural life, but also gain hints on how to live wisely in this harsh society.
The word 'Kam-eon' in the title means 'thank you' in Vietnamese.
Yujeong and her neighbors in Salmun-ri show us what it means to live a life of true gratitude in all things.
This is why readers cannot help but be grateful for the existence of the author Kim Jung-mi.
