“The truth is this.
It's not that the life we're given is short, it's that we make it so.
“It is not that we lack time in life, but that we waste it” (Ita est: non accipimus brevem vitam, sed facimus, nec inopes eius sed prodigi sumus).

Seneca (Lucius Annaeus Seneca, 4 BC – 65 AD), from De Brevitate Vitae

Pastor Namjun Kim's book "Laziness," which presents a path to living a fulfilling life and enjoying true happiness through the lessons of proverbs about laziness, became an instant bestseller upon its publication in 2003, generating an explosive response and going through over 200 reprints.
This practical book of proverbs and meditations, which defines the truly meaningful diligence of modern people living busy lives and teaches them how to reorganize their priorities in order to live their one and only life worthwhile, has been read by countless people with its consistent power, resonating with them despite the passage of time.
As we move beyond the era of YOLO and small happiness to an era of "God-saeng," experiencing pandemics, wars, and environmental and climate crises, and entering an era of "God-saeng," a new reflection on diligence and laziness is desperately needed, this book provides advice and wisdom that is still essential to Korean society and the church.

Into the book
[Strategy] The reason we cannot live a happy life even after being saved is because we do not strive to become holy.
Jesus came into the world not only to give us life, but to give us abundant life (John 10:10).
An abundant life is enjoyed through grace and truth.
It is accomplished to the extent that the believer strives for sanctification.
We are saved.
We have been freed from the law of sin and death and have become children of God without condemnation (Romans 8:1-2).
However, we are not completely free from our old nature.
We must put off the old self, which constantly pursues its wrong desires (Ephesians 4:22).
[Omitted] People think that labor is a result of sin.
no.
Labor is a blessing from God.
The pain experienced in labor, not labor itself, is the result of sin (Gen. 3:17-19).

Human life in the Garden of Eden was not boring at all.
There was no laziness in recognizing and practicing one's duty.
But then the temptation of sin came.
Their hearts yielded to temptation and fell in love with sin, and then they sinned.
From then on, humans began to hate doing good deeds.
The weariness of the soul is the weariness of God and all spiritual duties.
The true nature of boredom is weariness toward God.
This is the effect of sin in the heart.
Boredom robs us of our passion for good duties.

Service continues in heaven (Rev. 5:13, 8:3).
We will praise God and pray for the church on earth.
We will come to know God and worship Him.
The joy of such service is the happiness of heaven.
The new nature of being born again seeks to love and serve the Lord.
But the old nature loves itself and wants to live lazily.
The mind does not seek to understand the Word, the emotions are inclined to worldly love, and the will does not resist carnal desires.
I want to live according to my own desires.
The Bible views laziness as an evil to be abhorred (Proverbs 19:15).
Good character is associated with loyalty, and bad character is associated with laziness (Matthew 25:21, 23, 26).
Like all evil desires, laziness is hidden and hidden.
So it's not easy to realize the seriousness of the situation.
Laziness is the secret enemy of a holy life.

Now we want to go out and find it.
This will be a journey of spiritual exploration like never before.
We will find its roots in our hearts.
And then we'll start a bold operation.
The blade is the Word and the surgeon is the Holy Spirit.
We will seek out and weed out the laziness that permeates every fiber of our being, both in our hearts and in our character.
It will be very painful.
Readers' reviews, such as those who threw the book down while reading it or those who were so deeply moved that they quietly put it down, speak to this.
Severe cancer must be removed to survive.
Just as a patient is horrified to see the cancerous lump removed from his body after surgery, you will be horrified to see your own laziness after reading this book.
But you will be even more amazed by the new life that will unfold.
[syncopation]

Laziness is evil.
If we give in to laziness, we cannot live up to this calling.
Laziness causes loss of mental health.
Lazy people cannot have an organized mind.
You may be able to spout out some bullshit philosophy with your natural gift for gab, but you won't have any ideas worth believing in and following.
Laziness is a waste of one's life.
Even while living lazily, time passes, and as time passes, the opportunity to live life also disappears.
The dust-like hours are scattered into the eternal silence of space.
It is not only detrimental to oneself, but also disloyal to God.
Because it is a waste of life that was not given to those who were not born.

There is no progress in the life of a lazy person.
I repeat a life without challenges.
The Bible caricatures the lazy.
“As a door turns on its hinges, so the sluggard turns on his bed” (Proverbs 26:14).
Do you know what a hinge is? A hinge is a device that attaches a door leaf to a doorpost to open and close it. It is also called a hinge.
It is a device that is attached to the door frame above and below the door to support the door and allow it to open and close at the same time. It consists of two metal pieces, one male and one female.
Once this hinge is installed, the door will continue to rotate along it whether it is opened or closed.

A lazy person moves around the bed.
It means that the bed has become a hinge in life and you can't get out of it.
That's what it comes back to.
There are things that lazy people can't do.
It is pouring out one's heart for good deeds.
Even lazy people have dreams.
But that dream always starts with 'If only...' and ends with 'I would...'
It's a wish, not a dream.
A true dream requires a willingness to pay a price to achieve it.
Lazy people don't have dreams, so their goals aren't clear.
[Omitted] It costs nothing to hope for something.
Because it is just a desire.
However, achieving a goal requires sacrifice.
[syncopation]

The Christian life is a well-ordered life.
Because otherwise, we cannot be faithful to God.
This doesn't mean doing just one thing.
It has to do with the ultimate goal of all life.
The lifestyle of a loyal person is simple.
It's about setting one clear goal and organizing your entire life around it.
Puritan John Owen (1616-1683) presented the characteristic of a Christian who walks with God as ‘oneness of purpose.’
That is, the goal of life is the same as the goal of God's salvation of that person.
It is the glory of God.
It is not just about having the words ‘Glory to God’ on your lips.
It is a life where every part of life is reorganized to fit that goal.
[syncopation]

The mind of a diligent person is like a shining mirror.
Reflect on your life accurately.
I reflect on every moment.
"Can I live like this? Am I living well?" People like this can fix their lives.
That's when the desired change appears.
Such a person relies on God.
Realizing your own weakness, look to God with a humble heart.
Why does the mind toss and turn on the bed? Because it feels weary of good duties.
When the zeal for good duty disappears, the mind becomes tainted with corrupt passions.

Receiving grace does not change the situation in your life.
I still go to work, take care of my family, and go to school.
Even if we receive grace or face trials, the framework of our daily lives does not change.
You can't tell if someone is a true believer or a lazy person just by looking at their daily life.
But true believers and lazy people live different lives.
One person lives with a passionate soul, another with a weary soul.
That person lives as a dead person, and this person lives as a living person.
Through this man you receive insults, and through this man you receive glory.

Don't think that if the environment gets better, you will live hard.
The environment is not on our side.
It is something that must be overcome and conquered.
It's not circumstances that mess up your life, it's laziness.
Laziness of mind destroys the soul.
It breaks your relationship with God and it also breaks your relationships with other people.
It has a negative impact on other people.
A person born with honor will live a life that brings blessings to his neighbors.

We live busy lives, but aren't we living without God? Are we living a meaningless, repetitive life? We work, but haven't we lost our intimate relationship with God? Even if we live busy lives, that's a lazy life.
Look inside the shell of faith.
Look at your own heart, which is not filled with the love of God.
Diagnose the state of your soul if you are living a lazy life.
As you live your one and only life, listen to your heart and ask yourself what you are worried about.
Don't waste your life.
It's time to decide to break up with laziness.

The true nature of laziness, boredom p.
Among 24~45

There was a farmer who was known for being lazy.
That day too, all the other family members went out to work in the fields, and I was left home alone to laze around all day.
One lazy afternoon, I was napping on the veranda when I heard a strange sound.
The farmer opened his eyes slightly, wondering what was going on.
But what's going on? It's broad daylight, and yet some daring thief is climbing over the wall.
It was the sound of a brick hitting the ground as the thief climbed over an old wall.
But the farmer fell asleep again.
And then he muttered.
“Oh, it’s a thief…
“That guy, just come down to the yard.” Soon, a “thud” was heard.
"Isn't that a thief jumping down from the wall and creeping across the yard?" But the farmer muttered, unable to control his drooping eyelids.
“You punk, just come inside the house.”

The thief, thinking that the farmer was fast asleep, crept into the house.
I passed the lying farmer and entered the living room.
But still the farmer muttered to himself, still sleepy.
“He’s going into the bedroom.
“Just come out and see what you find.” After a while, the thief came out of the bedroom.
Carrying a bundle of valuable items.
And then I walked towards the main gate.
The landlord watched the blurry back of the thief as he opened the front door and went out.
But I couldn't wake up and muttered.
“You bastard, just come back again.” [Omitted]

Laziness is misguided self-love.
Lazy people rarely admit that they are wrong.
Constantly looking for excuses and pretexts.
People can't always be busy.
Sometimes you need a break.
Especially when we are physically and mentally exhausted, it is God's work to give us a little rest.
You need to be focused when you work and relaxed when you rest.
It's like unstringing a stringed instrument after it's been played and storing it away.
We need proper rest.
However, you must understand your own corrupt nature and take a break.
We must distinguish between the natural need for rest, which must be granted, and the lust for laziness, which must be rejected.
To do this, I need to know how far my body and mind can work and how much tension they can tolerate.
Only then can we judge whether the mind's desire for rest is justified or unjustified. [Omitted]

What is the essence of self-love? It is a heart that values itself more than God.
Laziness does not find it rewarding to give glory to God.
I just want to be a little more comfortable right now.
[Omitted] Self-love is an instinctive desire.
It is something you have by nature, even if no one teaches you it.
Sensitive to one's own interests.
There are people who abuse themselves, but if you look closely, that is just a twisted way of loving themselves.
Everyone loves themselves.
But truly loving oneself is not something that can be achieved through one's own strength.
Without grace, it is impossible.
Because true self-love is only possible through loving God.

If you love your false self, you will have to go against God, and if you love your true self, you will have to give up your selfish desires.
So the great church father Aurelius Augustinus (354-430) said in his In Joannis Evangelium Tractatus:
“He who loves himself and does not love God does not love himself at all.
In contrast, a person who truly loves himself is someone who loves God and does not love himself.” Do you understand what this means? If you love yourself without loving God, you will ultimately be unhappy, so you do not truly love yourself. If you love God and do not love yourself, you will ultimately be happy because of God, so you truly love yourself.
[syncopation]

Labor makes people realize their own worth.
When you do meaningful work, you develop a healthy mind.
When we know God, understand the world, realize our purpose in existence, and live our lives working, we find meaning in life.
How can people be happy if they don't even know why they were born or how they should live? We must never forget that labor is a blessing from God.
“……you shall eat the fruit of your labor……” (Psalm 128:2).
[syncopation]

We begin the race towards heaven on the playground of life.
Some people will come along and run lightly, while others will run.
But there will be some people who foolishly run in the wrong direction.
Some people walk steadily, while others walk a little and then give up.
There may even be people who sit on the side of the road and play.
What kind of person do we want to be? Unless we abandon laziness, our running on the playground of life will be pitiful in the eyes of God.
There is no rest for an athlete running on the track.
He must not stop until the final whistle sounds.

To be alive is to have to live.
And to live means to have a purpose.
If you have a good goal, you should do your best to achieve it.
There, crying and laughing, rejoicing and grieving, and finding fulfillment and meaning, that is the happiness of life.
When the final whistle blows in the game of life, don't you want to feel the joy of victory? Like a victorious player, don't you want to run to God, the coach of your life, and embrace him with a heartfelt embrace?

The Root of Laziness, Self-Love p.
Among 48~65

Publisher's Review
By the power of Christ's blood we are freed from the law of sin and death and become children of God without condemnation.
However, since we are not completely free from our old nature, we must constantly shed the old self that seeks to live according to wrong desires.
Pastor Kim Nam-joon's "Laziness" deals with laziness, a secret enemy that takes root in the corruption of the heart and hinders a holy life, among these wrong desires.

Our lives are finite and the time we are given is precious.
That time was not given to us indiscriminately, but was given to us to live meaningfully.
Wasting one's appointed life is a sin of stealing God's time and being disloyal to God.
However, you must also know that living a busy life without time to glance around does not mean that you are truly living a diligent life.
Diligence without direction is not the life God intends and expects.
It should be noted that laziness and diligence are not just attitudes toward life, but are related to the direction of life.
No matter how busy you are, if you don't have a sacred goal, it's no different from living a lazy life.

Pastor Kim Nam-joon's "Laziness" points out that we are diligent in fulfilling our fleshly desires and endlessly lazy in carrying out our good duties, while also sharply revealing that living a life of constant hustle and bustle regardless of God's will is not diligent.
Thus, it leads us to see the true nature of laziness, which hinders the spiritual maturity of Christians and wastes their lives, to awaken us to its dangers, and to resolve to fight it thoroughly.
And since the execution of such a resolution is difficult to achieve without a change of soul, I urge you to first seek grace from God.

It warns modern people who live without caution and follow their own desires about how laziness is a vicious disease of the soul, and recommends that they identify the root of laziness in their hearts and cut it out from the root, just as a patient with a fatal disease undergoes necessary surgery.
In other words, it encourages us to look into the ugly tendency of laziness hidden within us and, despite the pain, to undergo spiritual surgery to cut out and remove the root cause of the soul's illness.
In doing so, it prepares us for the disastrous consequences of laziness, which ultimately lead to poverty and want, and helps us to escape the unexpected crises of life that come upon us like bandits or armies.
And it gives us a glimpse of the bright and meaningful new life that awaits us after enduring that disillusioning and bitter time.

In this age where more rest is emphasized as a blessing in life, and where living diligently is considered a pre-modern teaching and living lazily a modern teaching, Pastor Nam-Joon Kim's "Laziness" teaches that a life lived passionately for the glory of God, free from the pursuit of worldly comfort, is a life that truly breaks free from all bondage and walks the path of freedom. It provides a powerful challenge and insight to those who suffer from lack in the midst of abundance, just as it did when it was published 20 years ago.

This masterpiece, which reminds us of the brevity of life on earth and pierces us with the simple truth that even if we want to live for God's glory, we cannot live it if we don't have time, will diagnose the disease of laziness that destroys our relationship with God and others and destroys our precious nature. I earnestly hope that we will resolve to break away from this enemy of the soul.

This new edition of 『Laziness』 has been renewed after 20 years and has a more refined and refreshing look, but the themes and beliefs of the original version remain intact.
However, to enable today's readers to better understand and internalize the precious teachings, I organized them in a simpler and cleaner style, thereby enhancing the message's communicability and timeliness.
As time passes, the author's profound insight deepens, and we can read and understand it more impressively through fragrant and lingering sentences like prose poems.
