Theology is not an academic discipline.
Description
Book Introduction
“I came to seminary to learn God’s word and know Him, but I don’t have time to pray or read the Bible.” I often hear this from seminary students.
It is easy to be so busy studying theology academically that we neglect the devotional training of praying to God, meditating deeply on His Word, and becoming like Jesus Christ.
As a result, the life of Jesus Christ is not revealed.
Theology must be a life-giving gospel.
Theology must be the gospel of life of Jesus Christ that saves souls, saves the church, and saves the world.
Theology should not be limited to academic studies.
If theology is limited to academic studies, it cannot save lives.
Theology is not an academic discipline.
Scholarship is merely a means by which the Bible is revealed to us as the Word of God.
Scholarship is merely a means to help the Bible function as God's word that gives spiritual life.
Academics cannot save us.
Salvation comes only through the Word of God.
The reality of the Korean church today, where theology has been reduced to mere academic study, is a truly serious problem.
But the problem of the church is fundamentally the problem of the pastor.
The pastor's problem is the seminary's problem, the seminary's problem is the theologian's problem, including me as the administrator, and the theologian's problem is the theology's problem.
Only when we do sound theology, become sound theologians, and provide sound theological education can our seminarians become vibrant pastors who can serve the church properly.
Theological education should not remain at the level of teaching and learning theoretical knowledge.
We must produce ministers who can accomplish the work of life by preaching the living Word of God.
Theological students must learn the theology that can bring about the history of life, that is, the gospel of life in Jesus Christ.
"Theology is not an academic discipline" is the result of long-term reflection.
Beginning with the closing sermon at the 2003 International Conference of the Korean Evangelical Theological Society, it has been revised and developed annually through the spiritual retreat for new students at Baekseok University Graduate School of Theology.
I have compiled the new discoveries I have made while meditating on the Bible and praying about why theology cannot be an academic discipline.

Into the book
True theology must always give spiritual life to the church.
True theology must always serve the church, the body of Christ.
There can be no theology, and there should not be, separate from the Church, of which Jesus Christ is the head.
Any theology that fails to make the church, which Jesus Christ purchased with his blood, a church, is already dead.
---From “Part 1: Theology is not an academic discipline”
Reformed Life Theology is a practical movement to restore the faith of the cross and resurrection and to restore the life of Jesus Christ.
To restore the faith of the cross and resurrection, we must live a life in which Jesus Christ lives in us and we live in Jesus Christ.
To restore the faith of the cross and resurrection and live a life in Jesus Christ, we must follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Publisher's Review
We must always remember that theological education will be judged by its fruits.
The fruit of theological education is none other than the church we serve.
We must have a theology of the heart and a theology of the knees, not just a theology of the head.
A person who is filled with spiritual life is a true spiritual leader.
We must first enjoy abundant spiritual life ourselves and then dedicate ourselves to sharing this spiritual life we have received.
When we do so, our Korean church will be reborn as a church overflowing with the spiritual life of Jesus Christ, and as a church that regains trust and is praised and recognized in society.
