The Story of the Awakening of Mahayana Faith
The Story of the Awakening of Mahayana Faith
Description
Book Introduction
『Theory of the Origin of the Spirit』excellently explains that humans can become saints through practice, or they can become ordinary people through degeneration.
In Confucianism, it is said that “『The Great Learning』, one of the Four Books, is Confucius’s last words and is the gateway to the beginning of learning and virtue,” but in Buddhism, it can be said that “『Theory of the Study of Faith』 is the gateway to the beginning of learning and Mahayana Buddhism.”
『Theory of the Awakening of Faith』 is the best book as an introductory and general introduction to Mahayana Buddhism.
『Gisinron』 was also considered important by monks of old, and they wrote commentaries and annotations on it, passing on many teachings to later generations.

This book is a book in which great Chinese monks teach their disciples in the form of Zen questions and answers about the difficult and arduous process and methods of Zen practice.
Even a young child knows this, but it is difficult for an 80-year-old to practice, which is the core of Buddhism, and it emphasizes the importance of practice.
If you think of it as easy, it is easy, and if you think of it as difficult, it is infinitely difficult, but if you turn your mind to Buddhist practice, it is not that difficult.
I hope that through this book, anyone can overcome the difficulties of Buddhist practice and find the path to Buddhahood easier.

Into the book
As Wonhyo was passing through the rice fields south of Naksan Mountain, he saw a woman dressed in white reaping rice.
Wonhyo asked for the rice with the intention of speaking to him.
The woman smiled and gave Wonhyo dry ears of rice with only stalks attached instead of ripe ones.
While Wonhyo was carrying dry ears of rice, he came across a bridge.
In a small stream under the bridge, a woman was washing a rag soiled with menstrual fluid.
Wonhyo, who felt thirsty, asked for water.
The woman gave Wonhyo some water that had become dirty due to the cold water.
Wonhyo found the water too dirty, so he threw it away and drew clean water from the stream himself to drink.
That was when.
A blue bird sat on a pine tree in the field and said to Wonhyo, “Great monk! Stop this reckless act!” and then suddenly disappeared.
Under the pine tree lay a pair of stripped straw sandals.

While the monk was lecturing on the Nirvana Sutra, the wind blew and the flag fluttered.
Two monks who saw this were arguing with each other about whether it was the wind blowing or the flag waving.
At that time, Hye-neung said that the mind was moved.
Injong became Hye-neng's disciple on the spot.

In Buddhism, there is a saying, “Even if a three-year-old child can say this, it is difficult for an eighty-year-old to practice it.” This means that it is too difficult to practice.
Knowing and being able to do are two completely different things.
What Jo Gwa-hwa-sang wanted was just to put it into practice.
It was something that could only be felt physically through practice.
No matter how much I read the Avatamsaka Sutra and the Awakening of Faith, I couldn't grasp anything.
He had to dedicate 60 years of his life to carrying it out.

If you sit in a room with incense burning for a long time, the scent of the incense will still linger on your clothes even after you leave the room. This is called incense habit.
In this parable of the 『Gishinron』, clothing originally has neither fragrance nor odor, but when it is exposed to fragrance or odor, the clothing itself begins to emit fragrance or odor.
For example, the clothes worn by monks have the scent of green tea, the white clothes worn by doctors have the smell of medicine, and the clothes worn by fishermen have a fishy smell.

Hoeyang immediately said, “Even if you sit in meditation, you will not become a Buddha.”
Mazu was surprised and asked, “If sitting in meditation doesn’t make you a Buddha, what should I do?”
Regarding this, Hoeyang said, “It is like a person moving a cart pulled by an ox.
When the cart stopped moving, the man asked, “Is it better to hit the cart or to hit the ox that pulls the cart?” Mazu was unable to answer a single word.
