Description
Book Introduction
The story of Deathjo begins with a story about Paris.
Having lived in a garbage dump, I am a fly expert who knows everything about flies.
That day, the frogs were thrown to the ground, and the flies were rushing at Fumiji, scratching his face and biting the back of his hand.
Mr. Godani, who had just graduated from college, was assigned to the Tetsujou class.
The teacher, who grew up as an only child, has no time to dry her tears as she deals with the constant stream of incidents and accidents.
Children don't see teachers like that.
There were four traffic accidents, a child was hit by a car and dragged, and suffered serious injuries that required six months of treatment, Tokuji fell from the roof while trying to catch a pigeon and injured his leg, a child stole something from a supermarket, and a child ran away from home…
These are the days when I feel scared, lost, and want to give up.
But like any honest person, Mr. Godani tries to understand why the children acted that way beyond the incidents and accidents.
As we approach the children step by step, we discover an amazing world of children there.
And beside Mr. Godani is Mr. Adachi, a teacher who may seem like a gangster, but is a strong and dependable friend.

When the book first came out, I was worried that it might be difficult for children to understand.
However, as soon as the book was published, it became a national bestseller, spreading from hand to hand and from word of mouth to readers, putting the controversy to rest.
It has created numerous imitations and has been a hot topic, winning numerous awards including the International Andersen Award, and has also been made into a film and a play.
Even after 50 years, it is still loved and has established itself as a classic of children's literature.

Into the book
Actually, this school had many problems.
There were some peculiar people among the teachers.
One day, Mr. Godani wanted to show the children's writing to someone.
As I was thinking, "To whom?", I suddenly remembered Mr. Adachi.

“It’s not that Kimi thought she did something bad and didn’t repent.
When a teacher I like comes to me and tells me to quit anyway, when the only person I like in this world tells me to quit, I can't help it, right?
“That must have been how Kimi felt.”

"Teacher, did you come here to scold Death? That kid has no friends except dogs and flies.
“Please take a look.”
Isao pleaded earnestly.
“I didn’t come here to scold you.
“I came to ask Grandpa and Detsuzo why he keeps flies.”
“Well, that’s fine then.
That kid really doesn't have any friends except for Paris.
“The teacher is beautiful, so she is far from being like Paris.”
Isao spoke in a mature tone.
“You’re talking nonsense,” said Mr. Godani, lightly tapping Isao on the forehead. Isao laughed, “Hehehe,” and grabbed Mr. Godani’s arm.

“But I think I can understand how Satoshi feels.
Of course, you don't need twenty loaves of bread, but wouldn't you feel reassured knowing you have enough even if your father doesn't come home for two or three days? Thinking that way, you get bread every day and throw it away every day. Am I overthinking it?"

Minako likes the outside more than the classroom.
He runs around, smiling happily and waving like a jellyfish.
Mr. Godani sets out to search in a hurry.
A child like that wouldn't be afraid of a bicycle, and he wouldn't be afraid of a sewer hole.
Dangers abound everywhere.

While Mr. Godani is looking around, pale and frightened, Minako is leisurely playing with the goats raised at school.

“I watched quietly.
Then I looked quietly into the box.
The red one came out.
My nose was itchy.
I think I drank cider.
My heart ached.
“I like the red one, I like Mr. Godani.”
In the part where he says, 'I like Mr. Godani,' Mr. Godani's voice trembled.

“Really? You’re fighting too.”
Mr. Adachi was deeply moved.
Goji ran to the processing plant.
Goji was greeted with great acclaim, getting hit here and there like a baseball player who hit a home run.
Mr. Adachi, who had followed the trail, looked at this sight with pleasure and said:
“What will the world be like when you grow up?”
--- p.299

“There is no one in the world who steals and remains calm.
The teacher made a mistake that he would regret for the rest of his life.
I ate my brother's life.
“I grew up eating my brother’s life.”
The children were quiet.
“It’s not just me.
We all live off the lives of others.”
Mr. Adachi said that and closed his eyes again.

Publisher's Review
No child is prepared for a teacher.
There is no world that is well prepared for anyone.
There is no set answer.
Let's find and create together.
There is such a classroom here.

Tetsujo, who had just entered school, was a child as cold as a stone, unresponsive.
He can neither speak nor write, and has never touched a book or notebook.
If Deathjo didn't like anything, he would scratch, bite, and tear it apart.

Even Mr. Godani, who had just taken office, cried countless times while being scratched by Tetsujo's nails.
It's too much and too difficult for the weak and clumsy teacher Godani to handle the children at the Death Zone or the garbage dump.
There were times when I was scared, shaken, and wanted to give up, but Teacher Godani approached the children one step at a time.
And when you encounter the world of children who have opened their hearts, an amazing change begins.

It clearly portrays that the relationship between teachers and students, adults and children, should not be a one-sided one of teaching and leading, but rather a relationship in which they learn from and support each other.
As Tetsujo learns to read and speak, and grows to the point where he can be called Dr. Paris, Mr. Godani also learns and grows in his own way.

After writing the book, the author said, “I have been a teacher for 17 years and have learned from children what it means to live as a human being.
I am who I am today thanks to the kindness of children.
The process described is called “I Like My Teacher.”
“If I hadn’t written this book, I wouldn’t have been able to survive.”

Most of the people and episodes in the book are things the author met and experienced while working as a teacher.
I rewrote it as a novel based on that.
As a result, the cold and harsh reality as it is is vividly depicted.
Yet, I felt a warm feeling throughout reading the book.
I feel a refreshing breeze that cleanses my body.

No matter how difficult the reality was to bear, he did not shy away from it, but instead found human warmth and laughter within it and incorporated them into his work.
This is because the author's attitude toward life, which 'rejects despair', is reflected in the work.

It is said that a young female teacher, who was on the verge of giving up on managing her class for some reason, read this book to her third-grade students as a last resort.
When the teacher said she wanted to stop reading because the children were noisy, the children said no.
He read the book over the course of three months, and when he finished, there was a huge round of applause in the classroom.

I hope that in any classroom today, when teachers and children ask each other for directions, this book will be there as a companion.
