Into the book
There are two secrets I have learned.
The first is pretending to be strong.
Even though middle school is ruled by the law of the jungle, it's not often that students actually fight and throw punches.
This is especially true for girls.
So, what is important in 'Pretend to be strong' is not strength or fighting skills, but 'guts'.

'I have nothing to fear.
Just touch it.
It shows with its whole body that 'I won't let you stay still!'
What is most needed at this time is the technology to shoot lasers from the eyes.
When you make eye contact, you should never avoid eye contact first.
No matter who your opponent is, you have to shoot until the end.
Add a loud, guttural curse to that and it's game over.
No one will be able to take me lightly.
--- p.11

At that moment, I decided.
Decided to become class president.
I thought I had to step in before the seeds that child had spread became a massive tornado that swept away the entire school.
Why me, you ask? Because ordinary people lack the eyes to see through the evil hidden behind innocent faces.
But I am different.
Although the misfortunes of the past left deep scars on me, I certainly gained something from them.
If you try to fool others with kindness, it might fool them, but it won't work for me.
--- p.23

Kim Seung-hyun, who was slowly approaching, already had a computer in his hand.
Ah, it's Mercury that's catching the computer.
thank god.
If you wash your face or body thoroughly with soap, it will come off.
That was all that was on my mind at that moment.
Last year, when Seunghyun Kim painted my face with a magic marker, I thought I was going to die trying to erase it.
Fortunately, our school uniform was a dark navy blue, so even if I scribbled on it, it wouldn't be visible.

The computer in Seunghyun Kim's hand looked down at me from the air.
When a sharp computer was pointed at my face, I closed my eyes tightly without realizing it.
It felt like I was being stabbed mercilessly with a knife.
Once, twice, three times… .
The place where the computer passed was hot as if it was on fire.
--- p.38

I was frozen in place, as if struck by lightning.

Am I looking at my father in the mirror? No, that's me.
The same look in my father's eyes as he got drunk, broke things, and beat us.
At that moment, Hoya's words flashed through my mind.

"Ilgyo, you want to defeat your father? If so, you must first break free from violence.
Violence cannot be defeated by violence.
“The only way to overcome violence is to abandon violence.”
At the time, I didn't know what that meant.
Did Hoya already see it that day?
Me, who hates my father to death, but becomes more and more like him.
--- p.92

I was a child who loved books, and among the few books we had at home, there was Hansel and Gretel.
The story of a new mother who abandons her two children in the mountains.
Since then, I've always had a handful of pebbles in my pocket.
Until my new mother, instead of throwing me out, left the house on her own.
--- p.100

How many kilograms does a secret weigh? I realized it when it was revealed in front of the kids.
The weight of the secret I had been carrying around with me was also considerable.
Of course, I was so embarrassed that I wanted to die.
But on the other hand, it was also true that I felt a sense of relief.

Publisher's Review
“What is the temperature of my secret?”
An omnibus-style novel with five rapidly intersecting perspectives.

《Fifteen, Secret Temperature》 is an omnibus-style novel in which the stories quickly intersect from the perspectives of five people.
This novel's unique story development, in which the narrator leading each chapter constantly changes, provides readers with an immersive experience that makes it impossible to put the book down for even a moment.

The novel's format, in which Il-gyo, Yesul, Jae-wook, Ha-eun, and Kang-min appear interchangeably in each chapter and tell their stories from a first-person perspective, helps us delve deeper into the characters' inner selves.
Additionally, the writing style that allows the characters' personalities and speech to be felt vividly adds to the enjoyment of reading the novel.

First Look_Seo Il-gyo
“While fighting the monster, I too was gradually becoming a monster.”

After my father lost his job, whenever he drank, he would become violent towards my mother and me.
One day, as always, my father's fist flew at me, and I couldn't stand it any longer and pushed him away with all my might.
And I ran out of the house because I didn't have the courage to check whether my father was dead or alive.
I was wandering the streets when I ran into Hoya, and somehow I ended up sharing my secret with him.
After Hoya disappeared, there was a minor argument between him and Jaewook Lee.
And in a fit of anger, he hit Lee Jae-wook.
But at that moment, I saw myself in the child's terrified face.
Me, who hates my father to death…

Second Look_Sim Ye-seul
“I will never be fooled again.
“Even if it means trampling on someone else.”

Before transferring, he was falsely accused of being a thief at school.
I was innocent and wronged.
However, because of that incident, he was bullied in class and ended up transferring to Singi Middle School.
Since then, I have become a blind believer in the logic of power.
'I was falsely accused because I was weak and easygoing.
'You have to be strong to survive.' He took the lead in bullying the child who was identified as a victim of bullying.
That way, I won't be bullied.
I swore I would never trust anyone again... but one day, Hoya suddenly came up to me.

Third View_Lee Jae-wook
“Where did my four-leaf clover go?”

I am the representative of class 2, grade 2 at Singi Middle School, and I am a bully.
Nickname: 'Stir-fried Pork'.
I was originally a bright child with many friends.
But since when?
I started getting bullied by the kids in my class.
As I relieved my stress by eating, I gradually gained weight and had more things to tease about.
But thanks to Hoya, I discovered for the first time that I was good at something.
And I had hope that maybe I could make some friends too.
Until Hoya disappeared…

Fourth View_Yeom Ha-eun
“Will there be someone who likes me even if I don’t shine?”

I am Yeom Ha-eun, the goddess of Shingi Middle School who became an idol trainee through street casting.
It may seem like a glamorous daily life to others, but in reality it isn't.
When I think of the trainees who have been preparing for their idol debut step by step since elementary school, and who have the full support of their parents, I feel intimidated without realizing it.
But Hoya caught him in his mean and shabby state, which he didn't want anyone to see.
Will Hoya keep my secret?

And the fifth gaze_Kim Kang-min
“Kindness is just a mask to hide evil intentions.”

I know very well.
That people who are kind to others should be suspicious and wary.
Kindness is just a mask to hide one's true intentions.
Hoya is exactly that kind of kid.
But people are easily fooled.
I will take off Hoya's mask and reveal his true face to the world.
That is the mission given to me.
I will never make the mistake of trusting someone and getting hurt because of that trust again.
But I keep worrying about the temporary homeroom teacher, Jo Min-jeong.
Why?

One day, Hoya disappeared.
With five secrets to keep…
A coming-of-age novel that discovers friendship and solidarity through the "Hoya Disappearance Case."

《Fifteen, Secret Temperature》 begins with the temporary teacher, Jo Min-jeong, appearing as the temporary homeroom teacher for Class 2, Grade 2.
Teacher Jo Min-jeong learns that a student named Han Ho-yeon (whom everyone at school calls Hoya) has not been coming to school for a while.
But none of the children in the class know why Hoya doesn't come to school.
Teacher Jo Min-jeong decides to visit the home of class president Kang Min-i and Hoya.

But it's strange.
Ilgyo, Yesul, Jaewook, Haeun, and Kangmin seem to know why Hoya doesn't come to school.
But no one tells me why.
And it's clear that something is being hidden.

“At that time, I couldn’t help but think that way.
Hoya told Ha-eun my secret.
So that's what it was.
Because I hated going back to being bullied again more than dying.
I never imagined that someone would overhear the conversation between Hoya and me at the playground.
“What on earth did I do to Hoya…” (from the text)

On Hoya's birthday, something happened at the playground, and because of that incident, Hoya disappeared.
Hoya knows the children's secret, and the children know why Hoya disappeared.
What happened that day at the wooden playground? And what secret are the children so desperate to keep hidden?

Jinmi Lee, the author of this novel, is a Korean language teacher in middle and high schools.
The author decided to write “Fifteen, Secret Temperature” after seeing children he met at a middle school located on the outskirts of the metropolitan area, away from the whirlwind of development.
As I read the autobiographies of the children who had been asked to write them as a performance evaluation, I felt saddened by the thought that their lives, which were only fifteen years old, could be so eventful.
Children who had been deprived of the protection and love they deserved due to the adults seemed to have no room to trust the world or accept the goodwill of others.
So, I put my hope in this novel that children would share the protection and love they didn't receive from adults with each other, and find hope through friendship and solidarity.

“It was only natural that the children could not form strong relationships with each other.
Still, it was a pity that their friendship was so shallow that it was easy to come together for immediate needs and then fall apart.
I dared to hope that we could give and receive the love we never received from adults and make our difficult lives bloom beautifully and warmly.
If only I could, I would become a fuse and light a warm fire of love in their hearts.
In fact, Hoya, who appears in this novel, may be someone I wanted to be, but never became.” (From the author’s note)

Through the 'Hoya Disappearance Case', the secrets that the children wanted to hide so badly are gradually revealed.
Some secrets are so hot that they make you angry and bring tears to your eyes.
Some secrets are spine-chilling.
Can these children overcome the secrets and wounds they each harbor? And find their missing Hoya?

Hoya, who holds the key to all the events that occur in "Fifteen, Secret Temperature," never actually appears.
It just appears in the children's memories.
Could Hoya be a real person, a child's wish, or perhaps a reflection of the writer's aspirations? Through the "Hoya Disappearance Case," Il-gyo, Yesul, Ha-eun, and Jae-wook come to understand each other and become true friends. I hope young readers will come to understand the power of friendship and solidarity.
