Into the book
… If I were to loosen up the title ‘Sunanidae’ a bit, it would be something like ‘A story of two generations who suffered.’
'Suffering' refers to the Japanese colonial rule in which Mando was wounded and suffered, and the Korean War in which Jinsu had to return home with a disabled body. 'Lee Dae' refers to the two generations of Mando, the father, and Jinsu, the son.
This work has the merit of concisely yet impressively depicting the suffering of our people over two generations.
The clear corresponding structure of ‘father-colonial generation’ and ‘son-Korean War generation’ allows us to see at a glance that the suffering of the nation is passed down through generations.
Additionally, the fact that two people join forces to cross a single-log bridge symbolizes the members of a nation joining forces to overcome difficulties, making it easy for readers to understand.
… ---From the commentary on the work “Sunanidae”

…This work tells the story of how the war outside the village brings misfortune and sorrow within the village community.
The war causes young men in the village to be drafted into the army, where they are killed, injured, or lost in the aftermath.
The villagers, who had originally lived peacefully farming, lost their peace and faced tragedy because of the war raging far away.
Soon, the once quiet and peaceful village community was exposed to the deadly dangers of death, disability, disappearance, and poverty due to war.
It is precisely because of these tragedies and misfortunes brought about by the war that Sambau became angry and fearful of outsiders like the suit-wearing men.
---From the commentary on the work "The Ferry Story"
