Into the book
… As Joseon lost its sovereignty and came under the rule of another country, it experienced rapid social change.
In fact, all the social institutions we take for granted today, such as transportation, postal service, law, and police, were created during the colonial era.
Also, around 1917, land that had been inherited and farmed for generations became available for purchase and sale through a land survey project.
Capitalist ownership relations have been established.
As a result, illiterate farmers lost their land and moved to the outskirts of the city, becoming poor.
It can be said that the people's resistance against colonial exploitation and military rule erupted into the March 1st Independence Movement.
“Mansejeon” captures the reality of Joseon at that time.

… As can be seen in the passage in the work where Jeong-rye’s mother says, “I’m broke financially, but Ok-im’s personality is bankrupt...”, the ‘two bankruptcies’ refer to Ok-im Kim’s mental bankruptcy and Jeong-rye’s mother’s material bankruptcy.
In other words, in 'Two Bankruptcies', Kim Ok-im's spiritual bankruptcy refers to materialism, where one can throw away even friendship and affection for money, while Jeong-rye's mother's material bankruptcy refers to the economic downfall of powerless ordinary citizens.
