Book Introduction
“Between ‘do’ and ‘don’t do’, I chose ‘do’.
“As a result, I tend to believe that there will definitely be something left over.”
Yoon Sung-hee, Jang Ryu-jin, Jo Kyung-ran, Kim Hwa-jin, Jeong So-hyun, Park Hyeong-seo, and Baek Su-rin
A message of encouragement for you as you begin your journey.

The twelfth novel collection in the Changbi Education Theme Novel Series, “Beginning Novel,” has been published.
This collection of short stories, themed on 'beginnings', contains scenes of beginnings that can be encountered in life by age group, from 'growth' and 'the beginning of friendship' in teenagers, to 'the first day at work' in one's 20s, and 'love' that begins in one's 70s.
As we go through life, we encounter countless opportunities to 'begin', but it's not always easy to jump in with confidence.
This is because there is a burden to accomplish something, anxiety about unknown results and destinations, and fear of unfamiliar situations.
This collection of short stories contains the stories of people who overcame such concerns and took courageous steps.
In fact, the hurdles to starting are not that high, and you are starting anew every moment, sending a message of encouragement.

Even in the midst of repetitive daily life, isn't it 'beginning' that makes life more vibrant?
From small, seemingly insignificant changes to life-changing challenges, leaving behind the familiar and safe to leap into the unfamiliar is a process of growth in itself.
Because ‘starting’ is always more effective than ‘doing nothing’.
This book is a follow-up to 『Sweat Novel』, which deals with the theme of ‘labor,’ 『Connecting Novel』, which deals with the theme of ‘media,’ and 『Coexisting Novel』, which deals with the theme of ‘the socially disadvantaged.’

Into the book
Seonggyu opened his eyes.
Then I took a deep breath and did a long jump.
I felt like I was inside a large soap bubble that my father had made.
--- From "Yoon Seong-hee_Magicians"

I started walking straight towards the elevator.
With my shoulder bag lifted once, I was holding an iced Americano in one hand.
The sound of the heels of my new shoes was refreshing.
--- From "Jang Ryu-jin_The 100th Resume and the First Day at Work"

It's only been about 10 years since I started learning how to cook chicken under the guidance of a teacher, but this is the first time I feel like I can do something on my own.
--- From "Jo Kyung-ran_Spring Peace"

Jaein internally recited the words that stood out on the list of things he had 'tried'.
…and I thought.
That list is about muscles, not scars.
--- From "Kim Hwa-jin_The Shape of Muscles"

Those things that cannot be remembered or turned back are clearly gone and have long since lost their imposing power.
--- From "Jeong So-hyun_Yesterday's Things"

We are immortal dreams in some way, having said a fake goodbye, being fake lonely, having only just finished this turn of the ever-lasting threadbare game…
--- From "Park Hyung-seo_Thread-stitching Game"

Funny enough, I suddenly felt like it was okay.
The joy of the unexpected.
A special joy that comes only when plans go awry.
--- From "Baeksurin_Black Sugar Candy"

Publisher's Review
To you who is about to start
Message of support

As we go through life, we encounter countless opportunities to 'begin', but it's not always easy to jump in with confidence.
This is because there is a burden to accomplish something, anxiety about unknown results and destinations, and fear of unfamiliar situations.
This collection of short stories contains the sparkling stories of people who bravely took steps forward, overcoming such concerns.
In fact, the hurdles to starting are not that high, and you are starting anew every moment, sending a message of encouragement.

Even in the midst of a repetitive daily life, isn't it 'beginning' that makes life more vibrant?
From small, seemingly insignificant changes to life-changing challenges, leaving behind the familiar and safe to leap into the unfamiliar is a process of growth in itself.
Because ‘starting’ is always more effective than ‘doing nothing’.

A welcome start
That first moment

Our growth begins when we realize that what we thought was everything wasn't everything.
Yoon Seong-hee's "The Magicians" warmly captures the "growth" and "beginning of friendship" through the innocent conversations of teenagers who have overcome the anxieties of childhood.
Jang Ryu-jin's "The 101st Resume and the First Day at Work" depicts the joy of a person who, after many trials and tribulations, lands his first full-time job.
Watching her confident steps, I find myself cheering her on as she heads off to work with a warm smile.
The character in Kyungran Jo's "Spring Peace" begins teaching cooking on her own for the first time after learning cooking from her master for 10 years.
Just as we cheer on a baby taking its first steps amidst enthusiastic cheers, we cheer on him as he realizes that he can do something on his own.

Say goodbye to yesterday
Courage to start today

Isn't it the deeply rooted experience of frustration that makes you hesitate to start?
The character in Kim Hwa-jin's "Shape of Muscles" does not call even regrettable experiences "memories I want to erase" or "failures," but instead names them "things I've tried."
It is the will to accept the past and live life proactively.
Jeong So-hyeon's "Yesterday's Events" also depicts a character saying goodbye to an irreversible time and welcoming a new present.
Despite the physical limitations that come with brutal school violence, he displays the strength to forge ahead in life while respecting himself more than anyone else.
Park Hyung-seo's "Siltugi Nori," which is thoroughly realistic yet mysterious, tells the story of an ordinary family's experiences in a daytime dream.
Just as the most important beginning and end in life are birth and death, following the life-changing events and vivid spatial movements that unfold through the theme of reincarnation, one becomes captivated by a uniquely strange atmosphere.
Can love begin even in old age, nearing the end of life? 'France,' 'Piano,' and 'Candy.'
Soft, sweet-smelling words come together to create a sweet story.
Baek Su-rin's "Black Sugar Candy" depicts the moments of love that a grandmother in her 70s encounters while carefully cherishing the years that have passed.
