Zelkova Guardians
Description
Book Introduction
“I still believe in hope more than despair. “I still believe in the power of life that lives within people.” 20 years after 『Children of the Magpie』 The touching feeling of hospitality as we shake hands with new neighbors who come to visit us. Reconnecting lonely hearts through the power of care and solidarity A story of healing and hope “The belief that humans can improve ‘together’ “I am convinced that this can only happen through solidarity and friendship.” - Recommended by Kim Young-hee (Mulkkobang teacher, National Korean Language Teachers Association) “In the embrace of the zelkova tree, children experience ‘a happiness that is afraid to be taken away.’ “The joy that can only be felt at the edge binds children together as a ‘guardian.’” - Recommended by Jang Il-ho (Reporter for Sisa IN) The new youth novel, "The Guardians of the Zelkova Tree," by author Kim Jung-mi, who has consistently stood on the side of the weak and listened to the quiet voices of the people, has been published. This is a story that warmly portrays the lives of immigrant families who have become our new neighbors 20 years after the film "The Children of the Magpie," which opened the year 2000 and gave Korean society a deep sense of emotion. It contains the figures of young people who have diverse roots but are forming a new community with even more colorful colors. It unfolds a fantastical imagination that there is another space inside the village's old zelkova tree, reminding readers of the importance of care, solidarity, and community. This is another masterpiece that breathes life into the essence of 'Kim Jung-mi's literature', which upholds the values we must not forget while not stopping at the same place and boldly taking steps forward for the next generation. |

Into the book
I decided to find a way for people to help each other.
Because we are not the only ones in crisis.
People, like us plants, cannot live alone.
Just as we live together in forests, people are much safer and happier.
Having lived for over 500 years, I still believe in hope more than despair.
It was thanks to the time I lived with people that I was able to enter into their midst.
I still believe in the power of life that lives within people.
--- pp.100~101
“We are all one person in this circle.
There is no distinction between up and down within a circle.
We are all equal and we are all precious.
(...) We are all different.
Some are tall, some are short, some are female, some are male, some are nine years old, some are thirteen.
In this circle, everyone is equal, rich or poor.
“It’s the same for both adults and children.”
--- p.222
It's September, but the zelkova tree still has the color of summer.
If you lie down on the Honggyumok and look up, it looks like a forest rather than a single tree.
And from one day on, Dohun began to feel that he too was a part of that forest.
Dohun knows that this is the power of Neuti Spring's hospitality.
Thanks to the hospitality of Neuti Spring, a new forest is now being created in Daepo-eup.
A forest created together by the Rainbow Crew, the children of Daepo-eup, and the Daepo Village Council.
Dohun dreams that the forest will be connected to Hong Gyu-mok's Forest of Memory and become a forest of the future for everyone.
--- p.253
When I was a little fruit that fell from my mother's tree, I waited for the day to go into the ground and sprout.
The time I spent waiting in the dirt was sometimes tedious, but during that time I learned that in order for me to take root and sprout, I had to cooperate with the various lives in the dirt.
I can never forget the thrill of breaking through the ground and meeting the sunlight for the first time.
When I came out into the world, I had many friends and neighbors who shared that sunlight with me.
So I was surprised again.
There was nothing just for me.
The pouring sunlight, rain, and snow were all mine.

Publisher's Review
“We are all equal and precious.”
A hopeful gesture of children uniting to protect the forest
In the story, in 'Daep'-eup,' a place where immigrants from various countries live together, there is a zelkova tree that has protected the village for hundreds of years.
This tree, which has shared the joys and sorrows of the villagers for a long time, has a secret hidden in it.
The tree spirit takes on human form and becomes a 'Neuti Sam' to communicate with people and bring children into the world inside the tree to look after them.
Do-Hoon, a middle school student who had been isolated and lonely since the COVID-19 outbreak, also gains strength by making friends thanks to his encounter with Neuti Sam.
Then one day, rumors of redevelopment spread in Daepo-eup, and Neuti Hill was in danger of disappearing due to apartment construction.
Dohun and his friends try to spread the word about Neuti Hill and help Neuti Spring through the dance club 'Rainbow Crew'...
Can the Rainbow Crew unite to protect Neuti Spring and Daepo-eup? This heartwarming story unfolds as children find self-affirmation through dance and strive to protect their village community through the power of friendship and solidarity.
Children who grow up by supporting each other and believing in the word 'together'
The main character of the story, Do-Hoon, has never been able to love himself easily.
It was difficult to open up to my mother, who was from Vietnam, because we couldn't communicate, and I hated my father and grandmother who kept upsetting my mother.
Although it was not uncommon for children with immigrant backgrounds to be among his friends, Do-Hoon was particularly easily intimidated by the gaze of others.
However, through his homeroom teacher who likes BTS, he learns about the 'Love Myself' campaign and finds comfort in the songs that seem to be his own story.
Only when I dance with my friends do I finally feel that I have changed from my old self, and I begin to look forward to the new me that I will become in the future.
“Thank you, I’m honored, I’m glad to meet you.” Thanks to Neuti Sam, who gave them the words of ‘hospitality’ they had never heard from adults before, the Rainbow Crew children gained the courage to live for the first time in their lives.
Do-Hoon finally opens his heart to the world and learns to love himself, the person who had been harder to love than anyone else.
Even though they may sometimes feel like extras, BTS's songs, in which they believe in the words "togetherness" and shout "don't kneel, don't break down," by each other's side, offer warm encouragement not only to the children in the work but also to teenagers who are going through difficult times alone.
Our forest grows stronger the more we share it.
Just as the trees in a forest can grow stronger when they share the sunlight and wind rather than monopolizing them, the children of "The Guardians of the Zelkova Tree" learn how to live together by caring for one another.
Rather than one side unilaterally caring for the other or the other unilaterally relying on the other, they help each other, willingly receive help, and become strong supports.
This work, which depicts the growth of children who share and nurture the joy of hospitality they have experienced and demonstrate the power of solidarity through their lives, deeply touches readers living in an age of isolation.
