A trip to Iceland with an ice star
A trip to Iceland with an ice star
Description
Book Introduction
There are many travel destinations in the world.
But there is no travel destination in the world like Iceland.
This is a travelogue documenting a ten-day journey to Iceland, the land of fire and ice.
The author rents a campervan and drives it himself, following the 'Ring Road' (meaning Iceland's National Route 1, a circular road that circles the entire mainland) of Iceland, which has an area one level larger than that of our country.
Along the way, you will pass through lava fields, see geysers, encounter enormous waterfalls, and be amazed by the spectacular views of coastal cliffs and sunsets.
You can also experience the deep flavors of Iceland by participating in glacier hiking tours, boat tours, and whale watching tours, and visit small, rustic mountain villages.
But above all, the highlight of any trip to Iceland is hunting for the Northern Lights.
Finally, I saw the spectacular Northern Lights and finished my Iceland trip, saving the most beautiful moment of my 30s life.
The book also adds to the fun of a humanities journey through Iceland's history and culture.

Into the book
Our Icelandic journey begins with the Golden Circle, which connects Iceland's most famous tourist destinations.
The Golden Circle is a name that refers to three tourist attractions: Þingvellir National Park, Geysir geyser, and Gullfoss waterfall.
It is safe to say that most tourists who visit Iceland visit the Golden Circle without fail, and its relative proximity to the capital, Reykjavik, likely contributed to its popularity.

Iceland has appeared in many movies and dramas.
The pass leading to Seyðirfjörður is where Walter Mitty skated down in the movie The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
In the film, Walter is a working man who often daydreams but lives a very ordinary life.
Then, he sets out on a journey he had only imagined to find the author's photos that had disappeared somewhere.
That too to Iceland.
The film is gentle, but conveys a deep resonance about life.
Let me share a line that retains the resonance of the movie.

To see the world, things dangerous to come to, to see behind walls, to draw closer,
to find each other and to feel.

That is the purpose of 'Life.'

See the world, overcome danger, look beyond walls,
Getting to know and feel about each other.

That is the purpose of 'life'.

After roughly completing the morning schedule and running for six hours towards a cloudless place, the surroundings became dark.
My wife, sitting in the passenger seat, kept exclaiming how pretty the stars were.
I got angry for no reason.
I was driving all the time! So I just stopped the car.
But then it was.

The sky gradually began to ripple.
As we parked our car in a quiet place, others followed suit and started to park their cars to watch the greatest show the sky had to offer.

What more could I say?
It felt as if the past 30 years of my life had been spent witnessing this moment.

If you think about it, you could say we live to discover the wonders of this world.
When I first entered school, when I had my first kiss, when I saw a bride walking down the aisle, when I heard my child's first cry, and when I discovered the mysteries of the world through travel.
Such wonders and wonders come together to create a person's life.

While these words may not be a guide to life, isn't life richer than anyone else's if you discover wonder in every moment? Iceland taught me this lesson.

Publisher's Review
1.
My own way to travel Iceland's Ring Road in 10 days

Iceland's tourist destinations are concentrated around the capital, Reykjavik.
The most famous tourist destination, the Golden Circle (Singelír National Park, Geysir, Gullfoss), as well as Skaftafell, where you can go glacier hiking, are located not far from the capital.
So, it is common to enjoy the Golden Circle, Skaftafell, Blue Lagoon, etc. in a 3-night, 4-day itinerary, but Europeans on a long vacation or those who want something more challenging can also take a 'Ring Road Tour' that circles the island.
Considering that it allows you to experience Iceland's great nature in greater depth, tour small, rustic Icelandic towns, and even see destinations that can only be seen along the Ring Road, the appeal of the Ring Road trip is quite substantial.
The book shares basic travel information and itineraries.

2.
In search of the warmth of an ice star created by a hot volcanic eruption

The Iceland we see with our eyes is a desolate, cold, and lonely landscape.
Poet Lee Byeong-ryul also sang of that lonely landscape of the heart in his poem, “Centrifugal Force of Parting.”
Ironically, these cold, icy landscapes were created by hot volcanic eruptions.
So Iceland came to have the polar opposite metaphor of 'the land of fire and ice', and this metaphorical imagination became a medium to stimulate the emotions of travelers.
If we imagine a land that holds warmth beyond the wall of that coldness, like something unseen beyond the visible, like a splendid aurora beyond the darkness, if our lives also do our best to constantly get to know and feel each other in order to face the beauty of the moment and the eternity of that moment…
The movie "Walter's Dream Come True" says that this is the purpose of our lives.
So, that cold, icy land finally becomes an 'ice star', guiding travelers to Iceland to find the light in their hearts.
If the purpose of traveling to the Ice Star is to find warmth while getting to know and feel each other, then the trip to that distant land will be a special and meaningful journey in itself.

A place full of special features that you won't find anywhere else in the world.

Although the country has a harsh natural environment with frozen glaciers covering 10 percent of its land, this nature creates a rare and unfamiliar natural environment, creating beautiful scenery.
Thanks to its unique geography, Iceland has been featured in numerous films and TV dramas.
Movies such as Prometheus, The Uncanny Counter, Interstellar, the Game of Thrones series, and Fast & Furious 6 were filmed there, giving the area an alien-like appearance or showing the vastness of nature on screen.
Currently airing on tvN, “Seojin’s Family 2” (2024) was filmed in Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland.
