To create this birthday party invitation, Uijeongbu native Yoo Ho-myeong explored the microcosm of Uijeongbu, a city with the atmosphere of Dobongsan Mountain and back alleys of the city.
Even though he has been commuting to work in Seosomun, Seoul for over 30 years, Uijeongbu is his hometown and home to Yoo Ho-myeong.
Lee Dong-sik, a former broadcast journalist who was also a movie buff and traveled the world, covered the lives of the old giants of Uijeongbu with a more refined writing style and a deeper sense of history than newspaper reporters.
This time, I was able to relieve the regret of not being able to go to the famous Uijeongbu movie theater when I was young because I couldn't afford the theater and bus fare.
Oh Kang-seon, a digital innovation expert from Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, and former broadcasting PD, objectively covered the lives that fill the urban space of Uijeongbu 'now' and 'here'.
Ryu Ho-cheol, a self-proclaimed first-class expert on cultural heritage, has created a guidebook perfect for Koreans who enjoy exploring the mountains and rivers of Uijeongbu and discovering the ancient traces of the past.
Although he was born in Uijeongbu, Ryu Ho-cheol is a half-Uijeongbu native who taught cultural heritage to Uijeongbu high school students on weekends.
Park Jong-in, a newspaper reporter living in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, was surprised to learn that for a very long time, people in Gyeonggi Province had been saying, “I’m going up to Uijeongbu.”
Through this report, I learned in detail why Uijeongbu was treated like such a big brother, and so I researched why people should go to Uijeongbu.
This book, written by experts from various fields who traveled every nook and cranny of Uijeongbu, researched its history, and traced the traces of its people, weaving together the story of Uijeongbu like a string of beads, shows why you should visit Uijeongbu.

Publisher's Review
The eldest brother of northern Gyeonggi administration and transportation
Uijeongbu, the center of northern Gyeonggi Province's history
Uijeongbu, a city located in the northern part of Gyeonggi Province, will celebrate its 60th anniversary as a city in 2023.
It's my 60th birthday.
Until then, it was a town in Yangju-gun, but it became the second city in Gyeonggi-do after Suwon.
It is less than a tenth of the age of Seoul, the capital of South Korea, which has been around for over 600 years, but it is a remarkable achievement for the new republic of South Korea, which has only a short history.
In a way, the 60 years of Uijeongbu are condensed into the history of the Republic of Korea.
Colonial rule and war swept through this city, and traces of this remain in the military city of Uijeongbu and the transportation city of Uijeongbu that was conceived during the Japanese colonial period.
People flocked to the city.
A road was created in the empty plain, and a habitat was created along the road, and people lived there very fiercely.
Before we knew it, the people of Uijeongbu were enjoying a rare opportunity rarely seen in other cities.
A precious history and culture were created here.
What happened in Uijeongbu over the past 60 years
bind into one book
Those years are too precious to just hold a few celebratory events and let this birthday party pass, and the sweat of the people of Uijeongbu who lived through those years is too thick.
So, Uijeongbu City, which is celebrating its 60th birthday, the Uijeongbu Cultural Foundation, and several writers who have had connections with Uijeongbu in one way or another, decided to create a book about the events that took place in Uijeongbu over the past 60 years.
If we were to categorize it by genre, this book is a somewhat humanistic travel guide to Uijeongbu.
We could have created a record such as ‘60 Years of Uijeongbu City History.’
Compiling current affairs is a meaningful task of recording history and passing it down to future generations.
However, since current affairs are usually large-scale works that require a tremendous amount of work, there was a slight concern that only people interested in the history of Uijeongbu would see them.
So we decided to create a book for everyone in South Korea.
This book is an invitation to the readers to the 60th anniversary celebration of Uijeongbu.
When people hear the name Uijeongbu, they usually think of the Hamheung envoy and the military city.
For mountain lovers, Dobongsan and Suraksan are the only weekend hiking destinations? And now that the US military has left, there's nothing left in Uijeongbu but the mountains. Even if you come down from the mountains, after eating the army stew left behind by the US soldiers, there's really no reason to go back to Uijeongbu...
Uijeongbu, known only to this extent, turned out to be a city like this.
In search of Uijeongbu's history and people
Five experts explore every corner of Uijeongbu.
