Book Introduction
Fall in love with Hawaii, the heavenly island
Banana's Travelogue for You Who Love Life

It's always summer there, always happy.
Banana Yoshimoto's love letter to the tropical jewel of Hawaii.
A beautiful island where legends from ancient times live and breathe, with dazzling bougainvillea in bloom, emerald-blue seas, and warm, ankle-swaddling sandy beaches.

It depicts the story of lovely people who bloomed in it and the sweet journey time spent with them.
A beautiful story of friendship built while learning the dance movements that depict the wind, land, and sky of Hawaii at a hula class, a story of a hearty dinner table filled with fresh white fish and fragrant beer, a story of fresh scenery encountered while traveling the islands with a young son, a story of new relationships met in Hawaii and deeper bonds… … .

Just as encounters with special people and special events can change lives, encounters with special places can also change lives.
Banana Yoshimoto passionately confesses in this small collection of essays how her life changed after encountering Hawaii, its people, and its traditions.
As the title suggests, "Dreaming Hawaii" is a book that vividly breathes the author's happiness in encountering a land filled with all the joy, life, and sparkle that a person can dream of while living.
A land of ancient gods, the primordial breath of hula dancing, and the utterly beautiful nature and people who resemble it.
Banana describes all this beauty in honest and clear language, sharing with readers the moments of transformation she encountered within it.

Into the book
On both sides of the long, winding hill road leading down to the sea, bougainvillea was in full bloom, displaying its vibrant colors and life.
“I used to walk this road to the sea with that person every day.
I can't tell you how cool it is.
I had a hard time, but then I suddenly ended up spending time with that person, and it felt like a dream.
“I was happy, and this road was so beautiful, I felt like I was in heaven.”
She said.
If I had ever experienced such a beautiful path, overflowing with light and flowers, and headed toward the sea with a romantic heart, I probably wouldn't have taken a single step forward. ---pp. 12-13

I learned that Waikiki is everyone's dream.
When evening comes, everyone's faces become slightly romantic.
As the sun sets into the sea, people's expressions become more relaxed.
This is heaven after all, so even ‘evil’ wants to be here… … .
That's what I thought.
---p.24

Being able to naturally exist in a role that fits you perfectly.
Is there any greater happiness than being alone in it, making progress little by little, even if it is slow, and just being myself?
Although my roles in the novel and the hula scene are different, it is enough for me to just be myself.
No matter what anyone says, in this world, only you can do that.
Whether your name is known or not, in any situation, all you can do is assert yourself. ---p.102

One day, during a conversation, Hiroyuki Ehara said this.
“Hawaii really is like heaven.
That feeling of wind and sunlight.
So everyone says that Hawaii is like heaven, but isn't it actually the opposite?
Heaven will be like Hawaii.
“People remember heaven.”
The strong wind blowing over the hill was cool, the scent of the sun-drenched grass was refreshing, and the shadows of the clouds moved slowly across the ground.

Publisher's Review
Falling in love with a travel destination can bring about a huge and irreversible change in our lives.
A voice calling you to the island, destined to fall in love with Hawaii.
The world's most beautiful travel scenery, with heartwarming photos by Banana Yoshimoto's lifelong friend, Jiho Ushida.
This summer, discover your own Hawaii.

■ Even though I'm there, I miss it
Hawaii, an island where every day sparkles, a story of sun, beaches, and love.

Imagine the morning you leave on your trip.
I leave my luggage, filled with my new swimsuit and sandals, at the front door, anticipating the joy of the sparkling sunlight and the wonderful encounters, delicious flavors, and beautiful scenery that await me.
At that time, we were already in love with the ‘travel destination’.

Banana Yoshimoto's new work, "Dreaming Hawaii," depicts the "romantic feelings" toward an unfamiliar place in a language of sparkling empathy, something that anyone who loves to travel will nod in agreement with.

I didn't really put any effort into it, but it felt like they were embracing me generously.
Hawaii was such an island.
As if he was saying from the beginning that he would show me everything in a friendly manner.

If you want to go, buy a plane ticket and be on the island the next morning.
If you actually try it, it's surprisingly simple.
Even if it rains or you have little luck, your own Hawaii will begin there.

Hawaii, a magical island blessed with nature and warm-hearted people.
Throughout our journey through the bookshelf with Banana, we will never regret falling in love with the island.
From a city hotel on the outskirts of Waikiki with a unique atmosphere reminiscent of a 1970s vacation, to the Waikoloa Hotel where boats sail in an artificial sea and dolphins swim right next to you, to a Japanese-style inn with a dreamy breakfast, these beautiful places will make your happy time in Hawaii even more special.
From Jin, our passionate guide who wants to share even a little of Hawaii's beauty, to Jiho, our friend who specializes in diving and swimming and has a genius talent for photography, to Mari, our surprisingly charming yet surprisingly unruly hula teacher, these lovely people make us love and believe in the land of Hawaii even more deeply.
A place where the sea ripples with a fiery sunset, amidst the heartrending island song sung by the Kum Hula (hula dance leader).
A place where stars, sand, and indifferent-faced fish swim in the middle of the night, and where the crackling, flickering light of a campfire is dazzling.
If you have encountered this book at this very moment, Hawaii may be calling you as if by fate.

■ “That’s how my second life began in Hawaii.

“This is the story of me and Hawaii.”

There is an ocean outside the window, and I can hear the sound of waves.
The dolphin pool was right next door, so I could hear the dolphins whispering, and a cool, happy breeze always blew.

The night breeze that day was really soft and heavenly.
I felt with my whole body that this wind was truly Hawaii.

The feeling of being immersed in water of just the right temperature, as if floating, for an eternity.
No matter how much I imagine it, it's something I can never experience unless I actually go there. It's that feeling of the wind always enveloping me even when I close my eyes.
I am proud of the Earth, which has such wonderful scenery.

I sometimes think about Hawaii, that island originally named Hawaii.
Fate called me to Hawaii.
As I was approaching my forties, I suddenly fell in love.
With Hawaii.
Until then, a path, a history that had been dormant within me, was opened anew there.
Those islands with all kinds of scenery and all kinds of weather.
It seems like the journey will continue in the future.

Everything we encounter in life changes us.
Among them, the moment we encounter something particularly beautiful often brings about an even greater change.
Hawaii, an island where “a landscape where each person gazes into the distance and becomes lost in thought” allows us to experience “the beauty that makes us realize how insignificant human beings are.” Banana, who has already encountered Hawaii and gained a new language, affection, and emotion from it, gives us one crucial tip.
“You too, love life.
Because there is only one time.
And when it's time to forget, Hawaii is always there waiting.
“Get on a plane and fly over to see me.”
