Into the book
Spirituality is nothing other than 'healing the heart and realizing a state of happiness.'
He also repeatedly emphasizes that the first step to breaking free from the habitual state of being unhappy due to being caught up in negative thoughts and emotions lies in each person's will and determination to become truly happy.
The author meticulously and elegantly outlines a series of steps that begin with perceiving the external world as it is, then freeing ourselves from personal thoughts and emotions, and finally achieving happiness by expressing the fundamental energy of life.
In this process, the insights of modern psychology, including psychoanalysis, are exquisitely woven together with the wisdom of Eastern and Western religions.
Perhaps that's why the book's development is so natural and refreshing, like a cool stream in a midsummer valley.
--- From the "Preface by the Supervisor"

The fundamental purpose of science is to explore reality, discover its laws, and use those laws to improve our lives.
Scientists cannot deny reality.
They must fully accept reality from the very beginning of their endeavors.
For example, to fly in the sky, one must not deny the existence of the law of gravity, but rather fully accept it.
The same truth applies in the spiritual realm.
To live a deep spiritual life, we must base it on teachings such as 'surrender,' 'acceptance,' and 'nonresistance.'
But these concepts can be difficult to understand.
Through this book, you will discover that acceptance is so understandable and practical, and embark on a journey to experience the great gifts it promises: freedom, peace, and inner enlightenment.

--- From "1 'My True Awareness'"

The spiritual journey back to the place of the true self is not to find your 'self', but only to realize that you are the 'Self'.
From a Jewish and Christian perspective, if someone asks whether they have a soul, the correct answer is this:
“No, it is not you who have the soul, but the you within—the consciousness—that is the soul.” So the question, “Who are you?” is the most fundamental question.
You cannot free yourself unless you know who is bound.
Likewise, you cannot understand acceptance if you do not know who is resisting.
--- From "2 'The Receiver Called Consciousness'"

This is the journey that unfolds before us.
A way out of that swamp of chaos that separates us from our own great nature and leaves us struggling just to survive.
As you begin to understand the nature of these things you are wrestling with, you will naturally be able to release yourself from their grip.
This act of letting go is what 'acceptance' and 'surrender' mean.
Within you exists a state of profound peace that neither the world nor your thoughts or emotions can disturb.
These objects may continue to exist as they please, but they will no longer dominate your life.
You will live freely in the world, but you will live with a heart of service and love rather than desire and fear.
This is what it means to live untethered.

--- From "5 'The Essence of Things'"

You can think of this as a layer of the mind.
The very first layer is where the experience of the present external world unfolds and takes place.
You could call it the 'here and now layer'.
The next layer stores images of the past that were not released when the experience of the outside world ended.
This can be called the 'layer of samskara'.
But there is still one more layer.
This is the layer where you are trying with your extraordinary mind to resolve the discomfort caused by Samskara.
This is the 'personal thought layer', this is the layer you most identify with.
You think this is you.
The combination of these three layers is what is called the individual mind.
Your personal mind is uniquely yours.
When the mind exerts its immense intellectual power to conceptualize an external world that will not bother us but will make us feel good, the layers of our personal thoughts are created.

--- From "15 'The Extraordinary Human Heart'"

We said earlier that you experience three things within yourself.
The world that comes inside, the thoughts of the mind and the emotions of the heart.
In fact, there is a fourth thing you experience within it.
It is always there, but most people are so preoccupied with the first three that they barely notice this fourth thing in their consciousness.
Yet, there is a very powerful flow of energy within you.
It has been called by various names in each culture, such as shakti, qi, or spirit.
In our discussion, we will use the traditional yogic term Shakti.
--- From "22 'The Reason Why the Heart Opens and Closes'"

You can dive into life with your whole heart, savoring it to the fullest.
Could anything be more valuable than this? This is what happens when you willingly let go of the past.
This is a very important spiritual practice.
You should be able to look back on your past and say, “Thank you.”
It doesn't matter what happened.
Keep this in mind.
In this universe, countless things are happening at every moment, but you only experience one of them.
How could you not be grateful for that one experience you were given? You came down to Earth, and that was the experience you had.
That's your life.
A series of experiences you've had.
Learn to love, appreciate, and savor your past.
Embrace it fully and be grateful for its teachings.
And let go of any judgment that there was something wrong with it.
Your past is unique to you.
It happened.
It is sacred and beautiful.
No one else has ever had that experience.
Also, no one will have that experience.
Accept your past, embrace it, and kiss it.
Love it till you die.
--- From "32 'Past'"

True spiritual practice demands that every moment of life be dedicated to self-liberation.
Life is your true teacher.
Life tests you to either move away from yourself or to return to you.
Life is your friend.
Everything that happens in life is a training opportunity to become adept at freeing yourself from yourself—dying to be reborn.
If you diligently pluck the fruits from the lower branches and remain in the place of your true self while the samskaras of the past are released, you will become a more conscious being.
You will no longer need to return to your center after a difficult conversation; you will remain there throughout the experience.
If you keep letting go, you will eventually reach a state where you remain permanently centered.
You settle into your true place and never leave it for the rest of your life.

--- From "34 'Handling Bigger Bulks'"

A spiritual being sees life this way.
'I came down to Earth for a while and these are the experiences I had to have.
It was hard, but I got through it, and I'm better because of it.' He doesn't suppress his problems and let them become the foundation of his life.
The problems of your past are just one of countless things that happened to help you grow.
There's no need to know why that happened.
There is no need to analyze cause and effect from the perspective of karma.
Every day all kinds of things happen and you don't know why they happen.
Yet, he handles it comfortably.
You are so true.
You are the consciousness that watches everything that passes before you.
You are deeply embedded within it, and nothing within it is stronger than you.
You have free will.
Instead of letting past events wreak havoc on the rest of your life, use your free will to accept what has already happened.
Free yourself from samskaras.
Transform trapped energy flows into powerful spiritual forces.
--- From "32 'Past'"

“A book that offers a spiritual awakening that will lead us beyond the barbed wire of the human mind and beyond the individual self.” —Tony Robbins, author of Awaken the Giant Within

Michael Singer's latest work, 『Living Untethered (2022),』 which many readers have been waiting for, has finally been published in Korea under the title 『Life Knows Better Than You (2023, Lighting House),』 with the delicious translation by spirituality expert translator Lee Gyun-hyung and the trustworthy supervision of Seoul National University's Department of Religious Studies Professor Seong Hae-young.

Michael Singer, "the spiritual teacher of our time" (Library Journal review), guides readers through tangible, concrete, and practical spirituality. In this new book, he invites readers on a journey toward inner freedom, peace, and unconditional happiness.

“Are you willing to let go of the person you thought was you?”
A practical conscious journey guide for anyone on a spiritual journey.

In Life Knows Better Than You Do, Michael Singer introduces the concept of "Living Untethered" to readers.
‘Liberation’ here means, firstly, ‘liberation from samskara’, the psychological wounds that distance us from our own great nature and make us struggle just to survive.
According to Singer, the reason our lives are always scary and painful is not because life hits you where it hurts, but because you project your own pain onto life.
Therefore, the spirituality he speaks of is 'healing a wounded heart and reaching a state of unconditional happiness.'

According to Singer, by worshipping our own samskaras, we have failed to accept life as it is and have developed a system of ideas about how everything should be.
So we let samskaras drag our lives along, and we end up spending our whole lives frantically trying to satisfy their demands.
This is our human predicament.

According to the singer, the way out of this swamp of chaos is to free oneself from oneself.
This is where the second meaning of ‘liberation’ comes from.
It speaks of liberation from the disease of 'false identification' that we all suffer from.
The singer asks.
“Are you willing to let go of that which you thought was your Self (your individual ego)?” As long as we identify our thoughts, which are released along with the samskaras, with the Self, we will never be able to escape this predicament.
It's not the voice in my head that's writhing in fear.
It is a being that experiences and observes all of those things.

“Life is your true teacher.
“Submit to life.”
The Forest Sage's Teachings for the Spiritual Life: Surrender, Accept, and Non-Resist

In this book, Singer proposes the practice of 'surrender', that is, acceptance without resistance, as a concrete way toward a liberated life.
It is about not resisting or clinging to life experiences, thereby preventing them from being stored as 'samskaras' (psychological wounds = repressed energy patterns).
According to Singer, we can liberate ourselves by ceasing to resist life in this way and becoming a "witness consciousness," taking a step back and learning to "just see."

Spirituality is not about changing the object of observation to suit your own disposition, but about accepting the object without being swept away by it.
'Just let go.' Not letting go of the situation, but letting go of your reaction to the situation.
It's not about letting go of life, it's about letting go of our personal responses to life.
This is the true meaning of the 'liberated life' that the singer talks about.
It is to let go of oneself, to transcend the individual self as the Buddha taught, to die in order to be reborn as Christ taught.

“You don’t have to be strong.
“You just have to become wise.”
Deeper and easier: words of wisdom from Michael Singer

Life Knows Better Than You tells its readers to stop struggling and start experiencing.
It is said that if you consistently let go of yourself in your daily life and embrace every moment before you with gratitude, you will truly experience life on the deepest level.
This book vividly explains spirituality in a way that makes it seem tangible, with a style and examples that have become deeper and more gentle over time.
In particular, readers will experience deep joy as they follow the process in which science and spirituality, which are considered polar opposites, are integrated into one within the book.

Profound, transcendent, and practical, this book serves as a sure guide on your spiritual journey beyond the thoughts, emotions, and habits that bind us.
In this book, readers will find a time of purification where past wounds are healed, and they will discover wise teachings that will free their souls and enable them to reach the highest heights.

Singer uses terminology from Eastern philosophy and modern psychology to explain the concept of waking consciousness, and he also quotes several biblical passages.
With the goal of helping readers regain a liberated life, the book's writing style is lighthearted and humorous, and the text is written in an easy-to-understand manner using everyday examples.
