Seoae Ryu Seong-ryong's "Vivid Record of the Imjin War, Written While Spitting Blood"

Fabric hardcover edition reviving the original cover of National Treasure No. 132

“Be careful not to suffer hardship by disciplining yourself for your past mistakes.”
A record of profound reflection written with blood and tears during the 7th year of the Imjin War!

Seoae Ryu Seong-ryong accompanied King Seonjo on his escape during the Imjin War and led the country as the head of the wartime cabinet.
After retiring from office, he wrote the 『Jingbirok』, which contains the records of the seven years of the Imjin War, to “be careful to avoid trouble by punishing past mistakes.”
『Jingbirok』 is designated as National Treasure No. 132 and is considered the best record of the war, and is evaluated to have recorded the causes and situation of the war in a detailed and three-dimensional manner.
This would have been possible because Ryu Seong-ryong, as the person in charge of the Joseon government during the Imjin War, not only had access to various official documents, but also witnessed the urgency of the war from the closest distance.

The Story Publishing Company translated the 『Jingbirok』 using modern language without harming the original text, so that readers can read it easily and comfortably.
You will be able to feel not only the deep reflection of the ruler who pushed the country and its people into war, but also Ryu Seong-ryong's heartfelt wish that his descendants would never again experience a tragedy like the Imjin War.
Additionally, the collection value has been increased with the luxurious fabric hardcover book using the cover of the first edition of 『Jingbirok』, designated as National Treasure No. 132.

Into the book
In the Book of Songs, it is said, ‘I discipline my past mistakes so that I will not have any worries later.’ This is the reason why I wrote the Jingbirok.

---From the preface written by Ryu Seong-ryong himself

One day, while Yi Sun-sin was in the middle of commanding a battle, a flying bullet hit his left shoulder, causing blood to flow down to his heel.
However, Yi Sun-sin did not speak and only after the battle was over did he cut the flesh with his sword and pull out the bullet.
The bullet was embedded two or three inches deep in the flesh.
The faces of the onlookers turned pale, but Yi Sun-sin smiled and spoke as calmly as usual.
---From Chapter 6, “Yi Sun-sin and the Joseon Navy”

Why are you following the tracks of the overturned cart instead of fixing the cart in front that has already overturned?
If you still hope to be safe, you are only hoping for luck.
What more can I say?
Oh, this is dangerous.
---From "Nokhu Japgi"

Publisher's Review
I wish this country would be right even for just one day!

On April 13, 1592, a Japanese army of 180,000 men invaded Dongrae, Busan, marking the beginning of the seven-year-long Imjin War.
The Japanese army, armed with muskets and rich combat experience, quickly advanced to Hanyang, and King Seonjo was more concerned with fleeing than with quelling the war and protecting his people.
The people were furious that their king had abandoned Hanyang and fled secretly, so they burned down Gyeongbokgung Palace, and King Seonjo, who had fled to Uiju, attempted to go into exile in the Ming Dynasty.
Then, Ryu Seong-ryong strongly opposed, saying, “The moment we leave Joseon territory, Joseon is no longer our land,” and lamented, “I wish this country could be right even for just one day,” and worked hard to overcome the war on behalf of the incompetent and jealous monarch.
Ryu Seong-ryong, who served as the Left State Councillor, Minister of War, and then Prime Minister during the Imjin War, left behind the 『Jingbirok』, which contained reflections on the war and warnings and advice for the future.
However, Joseon had to experience horrific wars and invasions, including the Byeongja War and Japanese colonial rule, without learning any lessons from the Imjin War and the Jingbirok.
And even now, the message that 『Jingbirok』 delivers to us, who are walking a precarious path amidst the complex international situation, is by no means light.
