A drop of tear
Description
Book Introduction
“What are the last words left for me? Following ‘Digilog’ and ‘Life Capital’, it was ‘A Drop of Tears’.” From November 2019 to January 2022, a month before the intellectual Lee Eo-ryeong of the era passed away. An unpublished manuscript written while reflecting on life and facing death. Lee Eo-ryeong, an intellectual of the times who presented the paradigm of civilization with his outstanding insight, left a new topic in his final moments: 'A Drop of Tears.' In the small tears shed for myself and others, he saw the seeds of hope for a world in which we live together. From childhood memories with his mother to the smallest yet most valuable thing, a single teardrop, from the free-thinking and creative inspiration that astonished the world to the cries buried in his heart and mind while fighting illness, these are the last words of Lee Eo-ryeong, a man who never put down his pen and reflected on life and death. |

Into the book
We all know that tears shed for oneself are powerless and shameful, but tears shed for others and for oneself are the most beautiful and powerful things on earth.
There is a popular song that says, “Tears are the seeds of love,” but “Tears are also the seeds of hope.”
To understand humanity is to understand the tears it sheds.
Here I wrote down the traces of those teardrops.
A drop of tear becomes a bead, a crystal, and a pearl.
A drop of tears that combines blood, sweat and tears.
The last 'drop of tears' to be shed when you can't write.
---From the "Preface"
Until now, I have only been looking for meaning.
I didn't see the basis of meaning that had no meaning.
Only when we are faced with death do we finally see the meaninglessness of life.
Now I see the moon and stars disappearing, and letters and pictures disappearing.
Escape from the web of meaning.
--- p.38
The disaster is too great for those who find happiness in very small things.
Please wipe away the tears of those many people who do not have great greed or desire for something enormous, but simply breathe deeply and be grateful even in the morning breeze.
My tears are there too.
They know how to shed tears honestly, but I am too embarrassed to cry.
thank you
A tissue to blow your nose, clean shot.
It went into the trash can like a basketball thrown by Nate Archibald.
So I was happy.
I felt good.
All day long.
--- p.121~122
'Ah! I want to live.
Shout 'Like the old days'
A drop of tear
Today has already become a long time ago.
It's not just Corona.
So many things change so quickly.
To a world I've never lived in before.
To anyone
To shed for others
The last drop of
teardrop
A miraculous flower that blooms even in the ice
there is.
Ice flower
--- p.144
It hurts a lot.
Being sick is a sign that I am still alive.
When this signal stops and the pain stops, that is the death we fear so much.
That's why suffering is valuable.
I had the common sense that pain is a part of life turned upside down.
Pain is death, they say.
no.
Pain is on the side of life.
The most powerful signal of life.
--- p.171
Let's walk until we can take even one step.
Let's breathe until we can catch our breath.
Let's talk until we can say even one word.
Let's write until we can write even one stroke.
Let's love what we can love until the end.
Pebbles, sparrows, clouds, dirt. Things I played with, chased, and gazed at when I was young.
Until I knew they were the things I loved
Let's love.
--- p.179
The last words left to everyone,
Love or some star name
Or maybe your hometown name?
What are the last words left for me?
It's probably not a word made up by poets.
A word that does not exist on this earth, a word not made of clay
It must be the words of a pure soul that fell into the weeds of dawn.
But I don't know if there is such a thing.
Because my body was made from clay
I don't know that word.
The moment death dies
You will find out.

Publisher's Review
The intellectual of the times, Lee Eo-ryeong, for the last three years
An inner record written while reflecting on life and facing death.
『A Drop of Tears』, the last handwritten manuscript by Lee Eo-ryeong, an intellectual of the times who presented the paradigm of civilization with his outstanding insight, has been published by Kim Young-sa.
The author, who passed away on February 26, 2022, was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2017 and refused chemotherapy to focus on writing.
He is known to devote time to his committed projects.
Surprisingly, it was only recently revealed that the author kept separate notebooks recording his inner voice, with no plans to publish them.
From October 2019 until January 2022, a month before his death, the author never put down his pen, contemplating life and death until the very end.
However, he did not reveal this notebook containing his own handwriting and drawings during his lifetime.
What marks did the author leave on his inner self as he faced his daily life and memories, embracing his fading fate with his whole being? What is the "one tear" he presents as a new topic?
A Tear of Tolerance and Love for a World We Live In Together
The last question he left us
Even on his sickbed, the author did not stop his activities of thinking and creation.
We sought a new topic for a world where we can live together in pain that cannot be shared with anyone.
It is 'A Drop of Tears'.
If we examine the meaning of those common tears and how they differ from the previous topics, we can summarize them like this.
The core of the theory of civilization previously presented by the author, such as 'Digilog' and 'Biocapital', is change and fusion.
The driving force behind grand discourse is the intellect and reasoning that keenly captures the changing times and seamlessly connects disparate concepts.
The free flight of ideas that allows us to see what others cannot see and create something that never existed before is fueled by a critical mind that discovers and compares differences.
A drop of tears begins in the heart.
It goes back to the mind before language.
What the author discovered while writing down notes on his sickbed, searching for the 'last words' left to him, was not grand concepts like 'digital log' or 'life capital', but an expression of his heart called 'a drop of tear'.
But these are tears shed not only for myself but also for others.
“We all know that tears shed for oneself are powerless and shameful, but tears shed for others and for oneself are the most beautiful and powerful things on earth” (p. 7).
The logic of blood (politics) and sweat (economics) cannot overcome conflict and division.
The author saw in the tolerance and love contained in the small teardrops the seeds of hope for a world where we can live together.
The Epilogue of Prometheus: A Vision of the Times
Lee Eo-ryeong's Inner Diary: A Humanity That Replaces Autobiography and Memoir
Like a diary written in the quiet of a night, looking back on the day, this book reads like an epilogue to the 88 years of life written by Lee Eo-ryeong.
An epilogue written by a visionary who always looked ahead.
Although the author never left behind an autobiography or memoir, this book provides a glimpse into the various aspects of his life.
The source of intelligence and imagination is a mother's love.
The countless grains of sand that cannot be counted until death appear as a symbol of love for the mother (“Mother… I am still counting the grains of sand.
“I leave without being able to fully experience my mother’s love.”, p. 12).
A piece that reveals the feeling of bewilderment at the prospect of death but not knowing what it is (“I knew everything until now, but it was like taking a Korean language test.
“I could have solved everything…”, p. 78), a record of the realization that pain is a part of life (“Pain is on the side of life.
“The most powerful signal of life.”, p. 171) makes the reader’s heart ache.
The beginning of the 'A Drop of Tears' series is the author's personal regret.
A tear shed while remembering the existence of a little toe that had been forgotten while cutting toenails (page 98), and a tear shed while parting with an acquaintance and wondering when they would meet again (page 131) bring to mind the author's weary and lonely face as he fights illness and lives each day.
Meanwhile, the prayer to God, “Please wipe away the tears of those many people who do not desire great greed or enormous things, but simply breathe deeply and are thankful even in the dawn breeze” (p. 121), and the aphorism, “Everyone has one last tear drop to shed for others, a miraculous flower that blooms even in the ice” (p. 144), show the noble value of humanity contained in teardrops.
Various forms of writing, including poetry, prose, and plain text,
Traces of thought and inspiration captured in hand-drawn drawings that blend with the text.
Rather than becoming an ivory tower scholar confined to a specialized field, the author sought to become a "creator of creators," producing new meaning and fun through free thought and creative inspiration.
This book contains fragments of the author's original thoughts spanning 88 years, compiled into 110 short essays and illustrations in various formats.
Witnessing the author's abyss leaves one in awe, while encountering the author's creative ideas elevates one's emotions.
Stories from the East and the West, past and present, including Cleopatra, Lee Sang, Jeong Ji-yong, Samuel Beckett, Chopin, Georges Rouault, Victor Hugo, Confucius, and Lao Tzu, are connected in a wide range of ways, drawing on a wealth of knowledge in literature, philosophy, history, art, semiotics, physics, biology, and geometry, once again confirming the author's storytelling prowess.
From childhood memories with my mother to the smallest yet most valuable thing, a single teardrop, from the free-thinking and creative inspiration that astonished the world to the cries buried in my heart and mind while fighting illness.
The intimate words of Lee Eo-ryeong, a human being who had never been revealed before, were revealed to the world in various forms, including poetry, prose, and plain text, along with his hand drawings that matched them.
The rainbow-like world the author embraces unfolds as a creative intellectual who transcends boundaries, a loner facing death, a warm-hearted father, and a son who longs for his mother.
