What is a national treasure?

Among the cultural properties that are considered treasures, those that are of great value and are rare from the perspective of human culture are designated as national treasures after deliberation by the Cultural Heritage Committee.
Nowadays, the designation number ‘National Treasure No. 00’ is not used.
This is because the designated number system was improved in 2021 to eliminate controversy over using the designated number as the standard for value ranking.
