Publisher's Review
Sports psychology has a history of about 120 years as an academic discipline, with the first research conducted in the 1890s.
It was after the mid-1960s, with the founding of international academic societies, that a systematic research environment was established.
In Korea, the academic society was founded only in the late 1980s, which is about 25 years later than the international trend.
However, by applying the power of sports science, including sports psychology, to improving athletic performance, the research and field application of sports psychology are showing the most dazzling results in Asia.
This book comprehensively covers information that can be considered canonical among the accumulated knowledge in the field of sports psychology.
Even within academia, there is still some confusion about the specific areas of specialization in sports psychology.
This book explains the pure field of sports psychology and does not cover information in the fields of 'exercise psychology', 'motor learning', or 'motor control'.
In other words, the scope of this book is sports psychology, a field of physical education that deals with psychological factors as independent or dependent variables in sports situations for the purpose of improving performance and personal growth.
This book is designed to be completed in one semester as a major course in a physical education department.
The level of content is geared towards upper-year undergraduates and graduate students.
Rather than covering content that is still controversial and difficult to accept as established truth, we have tried to cover mature information that has reached a certain level of conclusion.
Each chapter is structured independently, so you can read which one comes first, but we recommend studying them in order if possible.
If you are interested in psychological training to improve your performance, I recommend reviewing Chapters 9 and 10 first.
If you are a leader who runs a team, Chapters 11 and 12 will be of interest to you first.
Recently, the field of applied sports psychology has grown significantly in Korea.
There are also more and more teams receiving systematic psychological training from sports psychology experts.
Almost every chapter includes a 'PST Notes' section to provide examples of how the relevant knowledge can be applied to psychological training for sports teams and athletes.
If it were 30 years ago, when the application of sports psychology was weak, such cases would not have been included.
Readers who read this entire book will likely find it fascinating that, although sports psychology originated and developed in the West, independent knowledge is also growing in Korea.
We hope to include more of our own unique sports psychology information in future editions.
We have made several considerations in terms of teaching methods to increase interest in learning.
Special concepts highly relevant to the main text are presented in 'Click', and the most up-to-date information and information expected for future research are included in 'Unboxing'.
For each chapter, we have developed a significant number of review problems, practice assignments, and assessment items.
Review questions seem to be suitable for training that requires descriptive or argumentative answers.
The practical assignment is suitable for group work or project-style work as it includes procedures for collecting and analyzing actual data.
The evaluation items consist of multiple choice and short answer questions, and are sufficiently presented, with over 30 questions per chapter.
By solving the evaluation questions, you will be able to independently check your level of learning on the related content.
While writing this book, I received a lot of help from my colleagues and seniors in the academic world, as well as their research and practical application ideas.
Thanks to the efforts of Dr. Cheon Seong-min and Dr. Oh Eun-gwang, who helped with the composition of some chapters, we were able to meet the publication schedule.
I would also like to express my gratitude to Professors Kwon Hyuk-ju and Kim Hak-beom for providing practical application examples, Professor Kim Su-ji of Inha University for her graphic design work, and Professors Lee Yu-na, Park Ji-hoon, Woo Young-im, Yoon Jae-hyeok, Baek Seung-won, Kim Tae-yeon, Yoo Jae-hyun, and Hwang Chang-ho of Inha University Graduate School for their assistance with editing and proofreading.
