Publisher's Review
introduction
Today, leadership has become a central topic and a central discourse of our time, transcending the sustainable growth of organizations.
It is no exaggeration to say that there is no organization that does not pay attention to leaders and their development, and securing and developing leadership has become an essential task for the present and future of an organization.
In contrast to the numerous leadership theories and field success stories emerging in response to these contemporary demands, systematic research and guidance on how to develop and internalize the essence of leadership remains lacking.
Although scientific research on leadership began in earnest in the 20th century and has a history of over 100 years, academic interest and theoretical achievements in leadership 'development' are still in their infancy.
As a leadership researcher and a professor who meets practitioners in the field, it was both regrettable and shameful that there was no intellectual foundation to guide field practice and serve as a bridge between theory and practice.
Furthermore, the hopes of fellow researchers and students who shared the same concerns in anticipation of the publication of this book served as an opportunity to confirm that this intellectual thirst was not merely personal.
Over the past several years, I have been teaching leadership development theory at universities and have been deeply concerned about how to address this knowledge gap.
This book is the result of that reflection, and serves as a fundamental guide for practitioners in the field, executives interested in leadership, and researchers pursuing academic research.
In particular, co-authoring with Dr. So-Kyum Yoon, a leading expert in leadership development in Korea for a long time, made it possible to systematize leadership development knowledge while also incorporating practical insights from the field.
In this book, we aim to strike a balance between theory and practice by encompassing a wide range of research, from classic studies on leadership and leadership development to the latest findings, and by incorporating perspectives from the field.
Of course, it is impossible to cover everything in the vast and profound field of leadership development in one book.
Therefore, the purpose of this book is not to provide complete, all-encompassing knowledge.
Rather, we aimed to reduce deep-rooted misunderstandings and increase understanding of leadership development by integrating various fragmented and scattered research and practical practices into a single system.
I sincerely hope that this book will serve as a welcome first step for all those seeking to enter the world of leadership, laying a solid foundation for them to advance into a broader and deeper world of knowledge.
