Silvernomics: The Paradox of a Super-Aging Society
The Paradox of a Super-Aging Society: Silvernomics
Description
Book Introduction
This book is organized into four major sections.
Part 1 examines the challenges of a super-aging society and the potential of silvernomics.
We present the paradox of "home rich, cash poor," the impact of a compressed aging population, and seven key industries that can turn this into opportunities.

Part 2 covers specific innovation strategies for the seven major Silvernomics industries: housing, healthcare, finance, economic activity, education, food, and well-dying.
We empirically analyze how each industry can transform from a "cost" to an "investment," from a "burden" to an "opportunity."

Part 3 critically examines the experiences of Japan, Europe, and the United States.
We explore the path Korea should take by learning from Japan's "lost 30 years," the European welfare state model, and the American market-led innovation.

Part 4 presents plans for legal system and governance innovation.
It contains measures to integrate fragmented policies, foster public-private cooperation, and build a new social contract framework that fosters intergenerational solidarity.

In particular, this book includes a special contribution that delves into the ideal village concept of Joseon Dynasty scholars and the Korean silver community model derived from the spatial grammar of Hanok.
It is an innovative attempt to show that the wisdom of the past can be the answer for the future.

Publisher's Review
In August 2025, South Korea will enter a super-aged society, with people aged 65 and older exceeding 20.6% of the total population.
From an aging society to a super-aged society in just 7 years.
This is the fastest pace in the world, compared to Japan's 10 years and Germany's 37 years.
At the same time, with the total fertility rate expected to hit a world record low of 0.72 in 2024, we stand at the center of an unprecedented demographic shift in human history.

Many have called it a 'national disaster'.
The OECD's worst elderly poverty rate of 40.4%, soaring medical and pension costs, and a rapidly declining working-age population...
All these indicators seem to portend a bleak future.

But I dare to tell a different story.
A super-aging society is not a crisis, but an opportunity.
It's not despair, it's hope.
But only if we shift our paradigm and respond proactively.

Is it silvernomics?

This book presents a new economic paradigm called 'Silvernomics'.
Silvernomics is not simply a ‘business targeting the elderly.’
It is a structural redesign of the entire economic and social system required by a super-aging society, and a new social contract for all generations who will live to be 100 years old.

We are already witnessing the possibilities.
Smartphone penetration rate among those in their 60s is 95%, internet banking usage rate among those in their 70s is 67%, and lifelong education participation rate is over 40%...
Seniors in Korea are more dynamic and enterprising than those in any other country in the world.
The 7 million baby boomers are the driving force behind the Miracle on the Han River, and they are now a potential resource preparing for their second life.

This book is not simply a warning or a voice of concern.
We present specific and feasible Korean solutions.
We aim to provide individuals with a compass for life planning as we enter the age of 100, companies with new business opportunities, and governments with a policy roadmap.

Above all, the message I want to convey through this book is hope.
A super-aged society is not an end, but a new beginning.
The 100-year economy we will create will be an inclusive growth model where all generations, regardless of age, grow and prosper together.
