Description
Book Introduction
An introductory book, "Understanding Korean Archaeology," which compiles the achievements of Korean archaeological research, has been published.
As an introduction to Korean archaeology, there is the late Professor Won-Yong Kim's "Introduction to Korean Archaeology" published in 1986. In 2010, the Korean Archaeological Society published "Lectures on Korean Archaeology," which reflects the results of 20 years of research, and it has been widely used as a popular introductory text and an introductory text for undergraduate students.
When the Korean Archaeological Society published the revised edition of "Lectures on Korean Archaeology" in 2015, it recognized the need for a new introductory book that reflected newly accumulated research results and methodological developments, and formed the Editorial Committee for the Introductory Book on Archaeology in 2018.
The compilation project, which began during the term of the 26th President Lee Nam-gyu, was fully launched during the term of the 27th President Lee Cheong-gyu, and finally, after five years of work during the term of the 28th President Park Soon-bal, was finally published during the term of the 29th President Kim Gil-sik.

『Understanding Korean Archaeology』 was published as an introductory book consisting of 16 chapters written by 15 authors, with the editorial committee centered around editor-in-chief Lee Cheong-gyu, coordinating the planning and execution of the publication, and the secretaries of the Yeongnam Cultural Heritage Research Institute taking charge of the practical work.
Its historical scope extends from the Paleolithic Age to the Joseon Dynasty, and geographically, it encompasses the Korean Peninsula and Northeastern China, making it an introductory book that truly encompasses the entire scope of Korean archaeological research.

Publisher's Review
『Understanding Korean Archaeology』 is organized into independent chapters by period and topic, and each chapter, which is organized into approximately 30 pages, has a consistent structure consisting of an introduction introducing the contents of the chapter, a main body discussing the topic in detail, and a conclusion that covers the entire content. In addition, a map detailing the locations of the major sites covered in the chapter is attached at the beginning of each chapter to aid understanding of the topic.

The chapter structure of 『Understanding Korean Archaeology』 is composed of three chapters covering the prehistoric era based on the Stone and Bronze Ages, four chapters covering the period when full-scale culture began to be established on the Korean Peninsula, one chapter dealing with the theoretical issues of dividing the Proto-Three Kingdoms period and the Three Kingdoms period, six chapters covering the Three Kingdoms period, and two chapters covering the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties.
A unique feature of the plan is that the 16 chapters are treated with equal length and level of discussion without setting up separate 'parts'.

"Understanding Korean Archaeology" devotes a chapter to the northern political entities of early Goguryeo, Buyeo, Okjeo, and Euplo, which were not given significant attention in previous introductory books, and provides a detailed introduction. The cultures of Nakrang and Daebang and Han Ye are also discussed in detail in one chapter each.
In addition, the appendix of the 『Lecture on Korean Archaeology』, which was left as a future task, has been allocated to two independent chapters based on the results of full-scale research on the achievements of archaeological research in Goryeo and Joseon, thereby reflecting the results of the expansion of the research area of Korean archaeology.

The 215X276mm wide format of 『Understanding Korean Archaeology』 provides an overview of the achievements of Korean archaeological research that have been steadily accumulated since liberation through the abundant use of drawings and illustrations. It also provides essential content for forming a basic framework of awareness for deeper understanding and research by organizing the current status and achievements of research by authorities in the field in about 30 pages.

The Korean Archaeological Society hopes that 『Understanding Korean Archaeology』, which was planned with the critical awareness that it should be ‘archaeology with the public,’ will increase public interest in archaeology and become a ‘catalyst for archaeology with the public.’ We hope that this hope will be realized in the interest of those new to archaeological research and the general public.
