Book Introduction
Monk, is Buddhism fun?
The “hip Buddhism” craze shows no sign of cooling down.
When comedian Yoon Seong-ho performed a Buddhist scripture DJ performance under his alter ego 'Monk Iljin (now Monk Newjin)' at the 2023 Lotus Lantern Festival, it became a hot topic on social media with comments like, "Buddhism is having fun again without me."
The 2025 Seoul International Buddhist Expo recorded over 200,000 visitors, with over 70% of them being in their 20s and 30s.
The number of applicants for the temple stay program for single men and women, "I am a Buddhist - Sinheungsa," hosted by the Social Welfare Foundation of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, also reached a record high (2,620 people in total).
The live broadcast of the Cheondojae service for the idol group 'Lion Boys' of the K-pop Demon Hunters, presided over by Buddhist monk Beop-beop, created a huge sensation, surpassing 4,000 viewers.
Inspired by idol fandom culture, the 'Buddha Birthday Cafe' opened at Yeonhwasa Temple in Seoul ahead of Buddha's Birthday, and a pop-up store filled with unique Buddhist goods, including Haetal Company's 'Enlighten!' T-shirts, was packed with customers.
Buddhism is evolving by utilizing various cultural tools to resonate with the MZ generation, which values experience and sharing.
Is "hip Buddhism" just a passing fad? This issue suggests otherwise, as interviewees like Venerable Junhan (chief priest of Just Be Hongdae Seonwon), who says, "Buddhism was always hip," and Venerable Myojang (Director of Planning at the Jogye Order and former CEO of the Jogye Order Social Welfare Foundation), who adds, "As long as the Buddha's teachings remain firm, people will recognize its value, no matter how it appears."
In "Monk, Is Buddhism Fun?", we look into the lives of various young people, both inside and outside the Buddhist community, who find solace and peace in Buddhism beyond just fun.
