The power of surprise that changes my life
The moment you are surprised,
The brain forms new beliefs and changes your life.

Surprise creates new beliefs, and beliefs transform lives.
So, depending on how you use surprises, your life can change.
The Power of Surprise is a book that shows how the emotion of surprise we encounter in life changes our brain and our lives.

In fact, changing beliefs is very difficult.
However, the author says that the moment you feel surprised, your beliefs change without you even realizing it.
This is because the emotion of surprise evolved to immediately disarm the defenses surrounding existing beliefs.
Therefore, a ‘moment of surprise’ is absolutely necessary to change the beliefs that form one’s self-identity.
This is the 'power of surprise' that this book talks about.
This book is a guide to helping you create these "moments of wonder" so you and those around you can live richer lives.

The author of this book, Dr. Michael Roussel, experienced firsthand the sudden shift in his own beliefs, and as a teacher, he began to look at his students from a new perspective.
For the next ten years, I devoted myself to research in various fields related to brain science, including cognition, motivation, neuroscience, psychology, artificial intelligence, persuasion, evolution, and learning.
He has been a teacher and counselor for 40 years and currently teaches graduate students in education, nursing, psychology, and business how to use surprise to positively impact their interactions with students, patients, clients, and customers.

This book presents various anecdotes collected by the author over a period of ten years.
The various anecdotes discussed here are not just about impressive surprises that are 'surprising'.
Cases of impressive surprises may make for interesting conversation pieces, but they don't change us.
But the surprising moment when identity is formed is different.
The neurological event of surprise is the most important catalyst for immediately forming or changing beliefs.
By strategically leveraging these surprises, you can not only instill a positive mindset in those around you, but even change their lives.

Moreover, this book is the only one that kindly presents statements, attitudes, and situations that can be applied in everyday life right now, as if it were a code of conduct.
The strategies presented in this book can be easily applied by anyone, anytime, anywhere, and will greatly help improve your overall quality of life, including your work performance, interpersonal relationships, and health.

To illuminate the power of surprise and the wisdom of harnessing it strategically, this book focuses on five objectives, organized into five parts.

Part 1, “Faith,” explores why we have faith.
Part 2, "Bias," explains how confirmation bias helps us maintain our beliefs.
Part 3, “How Surprise Works,” explores the neurological and cognitive components of surprise.
We will take a closer look at how surprise can suddenly activate belief formation.
Part 4, “How to Use Surprise as a Tool,” explains how to put surprise into practice.
Through anecdotes and concrete guidelines, we'll explore how to elicit surprise and what to say during those moments when identity is formed.
Finally, Part 5, “Beneficial Beliefs,” explains some of the key elements that make up positive beliefs and how to make them your own.

This book literally teaches you how to use surprises to help people around you grow.
In other words, it teaches you how to intentionally create moments of surprise to bring out your latent skills or aptitudes.
That moment you've carefully and thoughtfully planned could be a momentous occasion for someone to develop new faith.
If a single, fleeting word could change someone's life, wouldn't it be worth a try? It's not that difficult.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone who works in a profession that easily influences others, including parents, teachers, coaches, and employers, as well as anyone who interacts with others!

Into the book
Unlike other emotions, surprise is the only emotion that requires interpretation.
This unique feature creates a proposition that can be considered the fundamental premise of this book.
The very meaning of surprise is that it can be easily manipulated.
--- p.26, from the "Preface"

The beliefs we have are not of our choosing.
Perhaps the word 'discovery' would be more appropriate than 'choice'.
When we reflect on our beliefs, we rarely know exactly how we came to have them in the first place.
It is impossible to have complete control over the process by which the brain decides whether or not to accept new information.
It is equally impossible to control actions or thoughts based on that information.
--- p.44, 「Chapter 1.
From “Faith Shapes Us”

When words of surprise work well, they can transform beliefs.
But generally speaking, faith must be maintained firmly.
It is good to have strong, yet functional beliefs, because volatile belief systems can lead to emotional turmoil and danger.
Survival takes precedence over right and wrong.
--- p.90, 「Chapter 2.
From “How Faith Functions”

When things go wrong and we face unintended consequences, we tend to blame external causes.
“I tripped and fell.” “You spilled the milk when you took it out.” “There was a lot of traffic, so I was late.” “You tricked me into getting the question wrong.” “I did this because of you.” The examples are endless.
Conversely, when things go as planned and you achieve the desired results, you take all the credit for it.
We only attribute good results to our own abilities when they are good.
--- p.125, 「Chapter 3.
From “Maintaining Strong Faith”

Surprise is a cognitive and emotional state experienced momentarily when an unexpected event occurs.
The experience that surprise evokes can be neutral, pleasant or unpleasant, positive or negative.
Surprise occurs when expectations are suddenly defied, and the intensity of the surprise varies.
The moment you realize that your expectations have suddenly been dashed, a window opens to acquire new knowledge.
--- p.181, 「Chapter 5.
From "The Surprise That Causes Reflection"

When you change someone's expectations, you fundamentally change their experience.
When a surprising event occurs, a window opens for making suggestions that can instantly spark new expectations and even lead to self-actualization.

--- p.202, 「Chapter 5.
From "The Surprise That Causes Reflection"

Once you understand how surprise works, you can no longer ignore the process by which new beliefs about yourself emerge.
Then you can consciously experience the process of developing new beliefs and become the true architect of your belief system.
--- p.245, 「Chapter 6.
From "Our surroundings are full of surprises"

To strategically leverage the element of surprise, you must either recognize moments when surprise occurs naturally or create it intentionally and systematically.
--- p.271, 「Chapter 7.
From “Strategically Utilizing Surprise”

A driver is a tool that can be used effectively when the right conditions are met.
The same goes for surprises.
Surprise can be a tool that can change someone's beliefs when the right conditions are met.
--- p.306, 「Chapter 8.
From "Activating Surprise"

Because laughter is a very powerful and usually spontaneous emotional response, it can be surprising when it occurs unexpectedly.
Spontaneity generally means a genuine and honest response that is not bound by social etiquette or political correctness.
Because laughter itself is so distracting, what follows is often remembered for a long time.
Laughter can hurt, or it can draw people in.
--- p.318, 「Chapter 8.
From "Activating Surprise"

One of the most important roles you can play in life is to positively influence someone and see them succeed in life.
--- p.403, from the “Conclusion”

You too can strategically enrich the lives of others.
The next time you have the opportunity to inspire someone, spark a new belief, and unlock their potential, ask yourself:
“How can I surprise this person and make him see himself in a new way?”
--- p.404, from the “Conclusion”

Publisher's Review
What is surprise and how does it work?

So that those around you can live more abundant lives
A guide to creating moments of surprise!

Jenna couldn't read or write until she was eight.
I started to take an interest in books because my parents read various classics to me, but after encountering difficult books at school, I couldn't keep up with the classes, and eventually had friction with my teachers, so I dropped out and started being homeschooled.
Frustrated, Jenna's mother comforted her, telling her that it was much better to learn to read after the age of 9 or 10, and that research had shown that students who learned to read later in life had better reading skills later in life. She reassured her that development was occurring in that order, so there was no need to worry.
Jenna was very surprised to hear this story!

After feeling greatly relieved and encouraged by her mother's words, Jenna spent her time devouring children's magazines, and one day, about a month later, she found herself reading the articles without realizing it.
Since then, Jenna has ranked in the top 3 percent of her students on the annual weekly reading test and has become an avid reader.

But there is a secret to this success story.
The research results that my mother found actually do not exist.
Mom surprised Jenna with a lie.
And that surprise changed Jenna's life.
Jenna's mother created fake research results to make Jenna feel surprised and form false beliefs that would function.
The reason this belief was able to avoid general resistance was because Jenna took her mother's opinion as positive encouragement.
But what if the mother had been sarcastic or angry instead of encouraging her child? The child would likely have developed a reluctance to read, lost interest in books, and likely never developed reading comprehension skills.

After listening to her mother, Jenna's mindset changed positively and she developed a 'growth mindset'.
A growth mindset is a mindset that focuses on success rather than failure and trying new things, and it is the foundation of persistence.
Children who grow up receiving praise for their process or attitude are more likely to have a growth mindset, while children who grow up receiving praise for their results or talents are more likely to have a fixed mindset.
People with a growth mindset not only enjoy challenges, but also learn from failure, making them much more likely to literally grow.
In addition, if you develop an objective view of yourself, you will be able to wisely find the path you want to take through feedback on your results.

So who gives children this kind of praise the most? It's their parents.
Ultimately, children's way of thinking is primarily shaped by their parents.
How we praise determines what kind of thinking our children will develop.
This can instill a growth mindset even more powerfully, especially if you can surprise the recipient.
CERS (Cause-Effect-Resource Statements), which can be used at the right time to create a surprising effect, instantly establish a positive growth mindset without conscious effort.

But that doesn't mean you can create a growth mindset with just one surprising statement.
If it were that easy, everyone would live a successful life with a growth mindset.
Establishing a growth mindset is very difficult.
However, a growth mindset or its core elements often emerge naturally in situations that surprise us.
In other words, surprise plays a very important role in fostering a growth mindset.

This book perfectly explains how moments of surprise can change your life.
Like countless others presented in this book, you too can enrich the lives of others.
Your single word can completely change someone's life! If you want to change your child, your spouse, or your employees, this book is a must-read.
This book is a timely gift in a rapidly changing world where uncertainty and anxiety are on the rise, and it will be a valuable guide for all of us who live with others.
If you're wondering how to recognize and utilize moments of surprise in your work or life, open this book right now!
