Into the book
It is not easy to look behind the scenes of an incident.
The method chosen by the production team of “Kokkomu” is far from efficient.
The more the better.
Find as much material as possible and take the time to review it.
And I ask and ask again the people who were there 'that day'.
---From "Entering"

Mr. Baekbeom's last wish was complete independence of the Korean Peninsula.
That wish never came true.
It is our homework as we live today, but we forget and live.
The saying that those who do not remember are condemned to repeat it felt frightening once again.
(…) Isn’t history something that comes into contact with the present through those who discover and act?
I hope this was of some help to you in the process, and it was a warm and honorable time to be able to talk about that day.
---From "First Story, PD Notes on the Assassination of Baekbeom Kim Gu"

It is said that after the Yodoho incident, the unit did not entrust him with any control.
Does this mean Mr. Chae, who falsely labeled Gimpo Airport as Pyongyang, can't be entrusted with air traffic control? Mr. Chae, who had endured the situation silently, finally took off his uniform on June 30, 1971, the year after the Yodoho incident, ending his eight-year and seven-month military career.
My dream of getting a job at an airline and working as a flight attendant after my military service also went up in smoke.
He was a promising air traffic controller who was fluent in English and had a Federal Aviation Administration air traffic controller license, but he was said to have been depressed for a long time and couldn't give up alcohol.

---From "The Second Story, the Kidnapping of the Yodoho"

39 years.
It's the time it took him to break free from the stigma of being a rapist and murderer, and the time that's gone from his life.
He was denied anything that a human being should enjoy.
I couldn't even watch my children being born, let alone growing up.
I couldn't even be there for my parents when they died.
I also lost my time as a husband.
It was a time when not only was there nothing lost, but only shame piled up.

---From "The Third Story, PD Notes on the Rape and Murder of the Police Chief's Daughter"

"Your Majesty! Please conduct politics on a grand scale!" And boom! It was October 26th.
This incident, in which President Park Chung-hee and Chief of Security Cha Ji-cheol were killed by Kim Jae-gyu, is the October 26 Incident.
It was an incident that put an end to the Yushin regime.
In modern history, the YH incident is evaluated as the fuse that brought down the Yushin regime.
---From "Sixth Story, YH Trading Female Workers' Sit-in Incident"

As I prepared for the broadcast, the weight felt unimaginably heavy.
Soldiers who participated in the war… ..
Some died or were injured, some were taken prisoner, and some returned to their homeland after many twists and turns, but most never returned.
Each and every one of them was 'Jang Mu-hwan'.
And we live in this country, which was protected by tens of thousands of 'Jang Mu-hwan's', forgetting about 'Jang Mu-hwan'.
---From "The Eighth Story, the Operation to Rescue Jang Mu-hwan, a POW"

Innovative storytelling that turns history education on its head

Digging into the background of the incident and peeking into the truth
"Kokkomu," connecting the past and present and sounding a warning bell for society

Published following 『The Story of That Day That Goes Round and Round』, 『The Story of That Day That Goes Round and Round 2』 is a book that reconstructs the episodes aired in the current affairs and cultural program of the same name, produced and broadcast by SBS, into a single volume.
Although 〈Kokkomu〉 has moved beyond pilot and seasonal broadcasts and has become a regular broadcast, its basic format remains the same.
Three speakers, known as the "Jang Trio," tell stories of major events that left a significant mark on history to invited storytellers and viewers.
Of course, to successfully compose a story, you need a wealth of material.

The production team of "Kokkomu" gathers all kinds of materials to develop the story, disregarding efficiency.
Official records and investigative reports, press releases from the time of the incident, interviews with survivors, transcripts of those who passed away…
Only by gathering the data one by one like that can we see a glimpse of the 'truth'.
In the book's preface, the production team quotes a critique by pop culture columnist Min Yong-jun, calling it "the most pleasant yet heartbreaking critique I've ever read."

“Kokkomu” is a program that conveys the importance of looking at the other side of an incident.
“It seems to me that this encourages us to take a closer look at today’s world, where important truths are easily damaged and distorted truths trample upon the world.”

It is very easy to define an 'event' in one or two sentences.
The events covered in “Kokkomu” and this book are no exception.
Let's recall "The Rape and Murder of the Police Station Chief's Daughter," directed by PD Wang Seong-woo and written by writer Son Ha-neul.
“The child rape and murder case and the fabrication of the suspect that occurred in Chuncheon, Gangwon-do on September 27, 1972.” What the production team seeks to uncover in broad daylight is the story of the ‘people’ hidden behind this simple sentence, the ‘other side of the incident,’ and at the same time, the solid ‘truth.’
This case, which was a rape and murder case and a case of fabrication of the suspect, how much pain it left on the falsely accused suspect and his family, what happened during the investigation, what process was used to make the suspect into a 'devil' at the time, what huge background was hidden behind this huge fabrication, and above all, how are the wounded suspect's family members living their lives?
No matter how much I try to figure it out, the endless curiosity continues on and on.
The answer to this question can never be summed up in one breath.

“History is a dialogue between the present and the past.”

British historian EH
This is what Carr (1892-1982) preached in his famous work, What is History?
To put it another way, the platform of 〈Kokkomu〉 is literally ‘history’ itself.
Records and memories of the past, and the perspectives of those living in the present, intertwine to reveal the 'truth'.
When we look at the events not only from the side that we can see but also from the other side, the events show us a completely new face.
And this truth serves as a loud alarm bell in today's world, overflowing with fake news and incitement.

〈Kokomu〉 is back!
A new trend in historical education shines at the 2021 Korea Broadcasting Awards.

Could this be due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting social unrest and increase in violent crime?
Television educational programs dealing with crimes, accidents, and unsolved cases have been appearing one after another.
〈Double-Sidedness〉, 〈Useful Encyclopedia of Crime Trivia〉, etc.
Although not strictly crime-related programs, there are also programs like “While You Were Sleeping” and “Midnight Ghost Stories.”
Although the materials and formats are slightly different, what they have in common is that they are centered around ‘storytelling.’
And the representative example of this storytelling-style educational program is “The Story of That Day.”
〈Kokkomu〉 proved its worth by winning the Culture, Arts and Culture category at the 48th Korea Broadcasting Awards in 2021.
Of course, the viewer ratings are also cruising along, maintaining a level that surpasses that of most entertainment shows.
As of 2022, it has gone beyond pilot broadcasts and seasonal programming to be broadcast as a regular program.

What is at the center of “Kokkomu” is, above all, “people.”
Not only is the format structured as a one-on-one conversation between people, but the thing at the center of the story is also a 'person'.
It is not simply the 'protagonist' or 'culprit' of a crime, as is commonly thought of.
By gathering and reconstructing the perspectives of each person who was at the center of the incident, we successfully reconstruct the huge jigsaw puzzle that is the entire incident.
The air traffic controller who was in charge of control during the 'Yodoho kidnapping incident', the photographer who went out to cover the hostage situation during the 'two-person carbine serial robbery incident', the son of the suspect who was falsely accused in the 'police station chief's daughter rape and murder incident'...
The story of the events of 'that day' heard through their mouths reveals a completely different aspect of the events that we had only known in fragments until then.
Through this 'conversation,' readers can understand the truth of 'that day' and reflect on the meaning this huge event holds for us today.

From the determination of female workers that became the fuse that brought down the dictatorship,
Up to the largest fraud case in South Korean history!

『The Tale of That Day: A Tale of a Twisted Life 2』 contains a selection of 9 episodes that garnered much attention from among the 20 episodes that aired in Season 2 of 『The Tale of That Day: A Tale of a Twisted Life 2』, which began airing in the spring of 2021.

Would you believe it if I told you that the fuse that brought down Park Chung-hee's Yushin regime was the female factory workers, then known as "Gongsuni" and despised? What happened on the day of the bombing of the Aung San Mausoleum in Burma, a tragedy that shocked the entire nation? What were the feelings of the South Korean POWs and abductees who leaped into the cold Yalu River in the dead of winter, seeking their homeland? How do we treat them today, who each endured their own unique wounds during this historical event?

So, what are your thoughts 'today' after hearing the story of 'that day'?
