Book Introduction
Refine your mind with calligraphy and govern your life with the Analects of Confucius.
A time of reflection revived by the scent of the brush tip

If you want to calm your wavering mind in this fast-paced world, take a moment to feel the tranquility of a single stroke drawn with a brush.
"Pilhyangmanri: The Wisdom of 2500 Years of the Analects Through Calligraphy" is a humanities book in which calligrapher Kim Byeong-gi personally writes famous passages from the Analects with a brush and interprets the wisdom they convey in modern language.
Our ancestors trained their minds through writing and established the center of their lives through thinking.
The author revives this ancient practice for today's readers.
One side contains the author's commentary, while the other contains calligraphy works born from his brush, offering the experience of killing two birds with one stone, allowing one to appreciate both the words of Confucius and the art of calligraphy in one volume.

In particular, this book comes with a special appendix, “Pilhyangmanri Pilsa Notes.”
In the special volume, the author not only directly guides us on the original meaning and mindset of 'writing', but also carefully explains the basic understanding of Chinese character fonts.
The manuscript notebook contains 200 calligraphy works included in the book, printed in an easy-to-follow format, allowing readers to experience the depth of thought and the beauty of the calligraphy technique by following the author's brush strokes.
As I write and read, following the flow of the brush, my busy thoughts subside and my mind becomes calm.
This book reminds us that the wisdom of our ancestors who used calligraphy to calm their minds is still valid, and will be a gift of warm comfort and time for reflection for modern people weary of anxiety and fatigue.

Into the book
The Analects of Confucius is considered a must-read at least once in one's life. However, if there are passages in it that are not appropriate for this era, I think it is necessary to select only the useful quotes rather than reading them all.
Even in this day and age, if you can pick out useful words and savor each phrase with the scent of calligraphy, the scent of writing with a brush by hand, wouldn't that also be a good way to read?

Calligraphy is a special art form that allows one to fall into a state of ecstasy, using the elasticity of a soft brush to write moving words as if dancing with a subtle, fragrant ink on white Korean paper.
Calligraphy, which involves dipping a flexible brush in ink and writing with a single stroke, requires more concentration than any other art form.
If you don't concentrate, the brush will be lifted or pressed down, resulting in a random thickness of strokes. Also, you won't be able to control the amount or concentration of ink, so you'll often end up with a mess of ink.
It requires more concentration than threading a needle.
But that concentration is not a boring concentration that you force yourself to do, but a concentration that you fall into without even realizing it, overcome by excitement.
In such a state of concentration and immersion, writing down a passage from the Analects, which is enough to become a topic of conversation in life, and savoring its meaning is a practice more valuable and efficient than any other practice, not to mention an artistic act.

As the saying goes, 'the handwriting is the person', so if you control the handwriting, you can control the person.
Calligraphy, which is the art of writing that resembles one's own self-discipline, is the greatest art and practice in the East Asian Chinese character cultural sphere.
This is why I selected famous passages from the Analects and wrote an article explaining them in the language of our time, adding calligraphy and giving it the title “Pilhyangmanri.”
Rather than simply reading the Analects, I wanted to let the famous quotes in the Analects seep into me through the scent of the pen.
To be immersed means to be embodied.
Embodiment is practice.
It would be great if you could use a brush to write calligraphy, but even if you don't use a brush, you can still achieve the effect of shaping it with a brush pen or marker pen.

Publisher's Review
The Analects of Confucius are something you absolutely must read at least once!
Easy to read, selecting only the words that modern people need

The Analects of Confucius is a world-class classic containing 2,500 years of wisdom.
However, it is not easy for busy modern people to read a whole volume of the Analects.
『Pilhyangmanri』 organizes the words that can only be applied to ancient times from the Analects and carefully selects words that are essential for modern people, explaining them in an easy-to-understand manner.
It could be said to be a modern guide to the Analects of Confucius, carefully selected so that it can be read sufficiently even without knowing Chinese characters or having much prior knowledge of Eastern thought.
In fact, people don't need that many words to live.
A few heart-wrenching words can become lifelong lessons, and you can live your own life by constantly thinking about and practicing them.
However, we, who live in modern times, are caught up in short-term stimulation, feel anxious, and live in a state of constant busyness, unable to find the true words that can help us find our center.
For these modern people, 『Pilhyangmanri』 conveys the Analects, which contains the words of Confucius, along with the fragrance of the writing.
This book has a unique structure, with commentary and calligraphy placed side by side, leading readers to go beyond simply 'reading' letters and appreciate the flow of each stroke and the texture of ink.
The scent of the pen leads to savoring, and savoring leads to contemplation, providing modern people with anxious minds with a sense of stability and comfortable rest after contemplation.
In the special volume, “Pilhyangmanri Pilsa Notes,” the author not only provides guidance on the meaning and style of transcription, but also includes 200 of the works included in the main volume.
The scent of food and the spirit of the classics will gently permeate the reader.

An age-old way to calm your mind in anxious times:
Whether with a brush or a pen, the moment I write a line, my mind becomes calm.

We live in an age where it's easy to lose focus amidst the constant waves of information and emotions.
Even the ancients had times when their centers were shaken.
At times like that, I picked up a brush and wrote.
When you focus your mind on the tip of the brush, you will reach a level of concentration and immersion that is stronger than when you thread a needle.
The writing done with such concentration and immersion resembles the person exactly.
That is why there has been a saying since ancient times, “The handwriting reflects the person.”
It is not easy for busy modern people to hold a brush like people of old.
The reason why handwriting has become so popular recently is that, although it is not as effective as a brush, if you write with a ballpoint pen, fountain pen, or pencil, you will eventually reach a state of concentration and immersion, which will lead to peace and tranquility of mind.
It would be even better if you could use a famous quote from the Analects.
『Pilhyangmanri』 is a guidebook that leads to concentration, immersion, tranquility, meditation, and peace, and will become a book that ‘rules that person.’
