Open Books Editing Manual 2025
Description
Book Introduction
To all those who strive to create good books
I dedicate this book to you

『Open Books Editing Manual 2025』 has been published.
This is the seventeenth expanded edition of the Open Books Editing Manual, which has become an essential manual for all fields requiring editing since its first publication in 2008.
This book is a manual containing essential information for book editors, and has been in constant demand not only in the publishing industry but also in various editing fields.
In response to this, Open Books publishes an expanded edition every year.

Parts 1 to 3 contain regulations published by the National Institute of the Korean Language, including Korean spelling, standard language regulations, and foreign language notation. In addition, examples frequently encountered in editing practice are organized and placed based on materials that have been used in Open Books.
Part 4, “Open Books Editing and Layout Design Principles,” discloses editorial issues such as handling footnotes and references, as well as the fonts, font sizes, line spacing, and character spacing used in Open Books.
Part 5, “The Basics of Production That Editors Need to Know,” explains the overall process of book production and provides a table showing the production cost calculation method for representative books published by Open Books, allowing readers to calculate production costs in advance.

Following last year, the National Institute of the Korean Language's project to add titles is underway again this year, and 748 titles have been reflected.
In accordance with the newly added entry in the 『Standard Korean Dictionary』, we have further refined various parts of the editing manual, including “Words that require spacing depending on whether they are listed in the Korean dictionary”, “Examples of spacing that are easy to misspell”, and “Examples of compound nouns that must be written together”.
In Part 3, which covers foreign language notation, examples are added to the Open Books' principles of notation of original words, so that notation methods can be understood not only when notating words but also when notating sentences.
The part that was revised with particular care this time is the section on types and characteristics of paper in Chapter 2 of Part 5.
As a result of the Open Books design team's joint discussions and meetings, we have compiled a list of basic considerations when selecting cover and body paper.

Appendix 1 includes the publication's title, copyright agreement, ISBN, deposit, and an "Editorial Checklist" to provide a comprehensive overview of editorial administrative practices. Updated information, including the ISBN Center's revised additional symbol standards, has also been incorporated.
Appendix 2 contains the “Copyright Transfer Agreement” and the “Publishing Rights Establishment Agreement,” a list of “Requests for Various Recommended Books,” a “Q&A on the Fixed Book Price System,” and Q&A information on the “Book Purchase Cost Income Deduction.”
The "Publishing Culture Industry Promotion Act" and its enforcement ordinance, which came into effect in 2025, were also reflected to ensure that the manual faithfully fulfills its role, allowing users to easily obtain the necessary information without having to search for other materials whenever needed.
