Tokyo store
Description
Book Introduction
Settled in Japan in search of a landscape as bright as Annie's
Tokyo store illustrations by Polish artist
"Tokyo Shop" is a collection of watercolor paintings of small shops in Tokyo by Mateusz Urbanovic, the background artist who participated in the animation "Your Name."
A landscape that one might have casually passed by while walking was reborn as something special under the gaze of a foreign writer.
The shops I've been seeing while walking through the alleys of Tokyo since 2016 resemble the old shops in the alleys of our beloved neighborhoods.
Traces of a bygone era are revealed beyond the old sign, faded exterior walls, and worn-out windows.
In this book, let's experience the nostalgia and comfort brought by stores that have quietly maintained their place in our rapidly changing daily lives.
This will be a valuable resource for those who love retro sensibility and those who want to tell a delicate story through background illustrations.

Publisher's Review
Drawn by the background artist of the anime "Your Name."
50 Tiny Alley Shops in Tokyo
"Tokyo Shop" is a collection of illustrations by Polish background illustrator Mateusz Urbanowicz, who visited and illustrated 50 shops in Tokyo where the past and present coexist.
Hoping that this precious scenery would never be forgotten, he faithfully recreated the shop's exterior in a painting, while lovingly restoring and reconstructing some of the old decorations that only remain in photographs.
Traces of the people who stayed there are still visible in the details of the illustration, such as the old sign, rusty shutters, and clothes hanging on a clothesline.
Mateusi added details to the painting based on his own experience observing the site and talking to the merchants.
Moreover, the light and colors he expressed seem to contain the passing of time and someone's longing, as if they were a scene from an animation.
This book focuses on five areas that retain a charming side behind the glamour of Tokyo, and each chapter features illustrations of shops in those areas.
Some of them draw not only the exterior but also the interior, making the atmosphere of the space feel more vivid.
The short texts accompanying the illustrations demonstrate the artist's skill and meticulous observation as a background artist, and add to the pleasure of imagining the story embedded in the scene.
In the 'Shop Notes' at the end of each chapter, you can see at a glance the address of the previously introduced store, the year it was built, and the author's observation notes.
It's also fun to unfold the illustrated map hidden inside the cover.
The final chapter offers a glimpse into the author's studio and work process, making it an interesting experience for creators.
As you flip through the pages, you'll naturally find yourself wanting to walk down these streets and browse the shops.
"Tokyo Store" will be a book that tells more stories as time goes by, making it a valuable resource for illustrators, travelers, and those who want to deeply cherish old landscapes.
